  1. He didn't say that. He said Whitner doesn't want to be there and probably won't. The fact that he put a tender on him before the lockout started should tell us something. The fact that Nix also said, around that same time, that it was up to Donte whether he wanted to come back or not also should tell us something.

The Bills want him back. They want him back at their price though. That's business related. Not football related. Gailey has praised Whitner many times for his contributions. The amount of Whitner bashing is tiresome. He's not as bad as he's made out to be. He definitely hasn't played like a Polamalu or Reed. True enough. But he's okay. I like the Searcy pick. Bring in some true competition for that position and see if Whitner raises his game.

What I hear in Nix's comments are that he think Whitner will sign elsewhere. But if 2010 rules are used this season Whitner will be back whether he wants to be back or not.

And on a side note. For all the Whitner is a whiner talk a lot of fans are no better whining about Whitner whining. LoL. Stay off his twitter and it won't be an issue...

The Bills want Whitner back, but to compete for the job and not necessarily win it. Which means they're not looking to pay him a lot of money. I have no doubt that Whitner's contract demands are higher than what his rookie contract was, and that's not going to happen for him, anywhere.

  2. I agree about Scott Chandler. Statistically he was the most productive. It'd be nice getting Nelson on the field too.

Chandler had only 1 reception for 8 yards. But he joined the team mid-season and was used mostly as a blocker. Given his size (6'7" 272#, which is bigger than Metzelaars), speed (4.78), and history at Iowa (17th in school history in receiving yards, 2nd among TE's, to Dallas Clark) he could be a big factor in the passing game, as well as the run game with his blocking.

  3. I am not saying there is a Peyton Manning in this year's draft, but if Gabbert and a couple others are mediocre, that isn't saying much for Fitz. There were a few that have the chance or an upside of possibly being a franchise quarterback, nobody sober has ever said that about Fitzy.

Who cares about "the chance or an upside of possibly being a franchise quarterback" if you spend a high pick on them and they never reach it?

  4. Could you imagine a 375-400lb NT who can move, lining up with Dareus on one side, and Williams or Carrington on the other? Nobody would move that line. And, he could go in on offense in the goal line situations and just push the pile. These are the kind of picks that I get excited about. You've got to think outside the box if you want to get an edge in this league, and be willing to take chances.

True. That's why I wanted them to take Bowers in the 2nd round, even if it meant going (back) to the 4-3. He's supposedly an elite pass-rusher who can play the run, and the Bills could have used him.

  5. That part of the story is probably flavored a little. I bet she was more or less collateral damage that got in the way from all the shooting. Or maybe worse she was in the vicinity so the seals decided to cap her too. The US wanted to present a case of no civilians, women or children were killed. It's unrealistic to think that would have done obl any good even trying.

I believe it. It fits the MO of a coward, who sends young men, women, and even children, to blow themselves up in the name of his cause, while he lives in a million-dollar compound.

  6. I love this kid! Athletic freak (I hope they re-test him after he gets to 360# and see what his speed/agility numbers look like then), intelligent (he's got to be; mom is a principal), good sense of humor ("I’ve got more of a beach body now") and seems like a nice guy.

This guy looks athletic enough to play Long Snapper & since no more wedges are allowed we just got ourselves a 2 for 1 man wedge!

Apparently he did kickoffs. Imagine him as a KO specialist and then running down the field making tackles?

    And this:

    :o

If he could lose 73# in 4 months, he can lose 15 in 2 more months (or whenever camp opens).

  7. If Shawn Nelson can stay healthy and learn how to block, he might be all we need. The kid has already shown some flashes.

That's a big "IF." There is also a guy named Weslye Saunders from South Carolina who was considered a top TE prospect going into last year, but he got kicked-off the team. He'd be worth signing as an UDFA, whenever that's allowed to happen. <_<

  8. I apologize if something like this has been posted but with rounds one through seven all done, how do you feel overall about our draft?

I am happy. Maybe a OL in round 3 but I cant complain

They picked-up a decent RT prospect in round 4. I was thinking TE, but after looking at it again, the TE class was poor, they might still be high on Shawn Nelson and Scott Chandler, and there are several top FA TE's, when the FA market opens.

As for QB, this was also a weak class and no one the Bills could have picked would have done better than Fitz. Might as well continue to develop Fitz and Brown, and sign an UDFA QB.

  9. My guess.... if this were a normal season and you could sign UFA's today; he wouldn't have been drafted. But, given the lockout, the only way they could be assured to get him is with the final pick. Hence, it seems bizarre.

Actually, the Bills told him that if he got below (I think it was) 400#, they'd draft him. They kept their word.

The thing that impressed me about his phone interview was what he said, when the reporter asked how he lost 70 pounds, "really it's not that hard, you just eat the right foods, drink water, and treat your body right".

A lot of people lose weight, then find it difficult to maintain. Someone who didn't really find it that hard and is strongly motivated, might keep it off.

I laughed when he said "treat your body right," expecting him to say "finally." Being 440+# is NOT treating your body right. Hopefully he can continue losing weight but not muscle/strength.

  10. The Bills screwed up yet again. How the hell did they come away from the 2011 NFL Draft without a quarterback? Ryan Fitzpatrick is not the answer. Every football person outside of Buffalo knows this, yet the Bills stubbornly continue to settle for mediocrity at the most important position in football.

So, let's see what Walterfootball.com had to say about the quarterbacks that went in the first round after Buffalo's pick:

Locker at #8 - "Locker's accuracy is abysmal and his football IQ is pretty low"

Gabbert at #10 - "I think Gabbert will be OK. I like the fact that he can sit behind David Garrard for a year or two

Ponder at #12 - "A reach that would make Inspector Gadget proud"

I'm not sure which one of those would have been worthy of a number three pick by their own descriptions. let's look at what they had to say about the top quarterbacks that Buffalo passed on in the 2nd:

Dalton at #35 - "received mixed reviews from the scouting community, so it remains to be seen how he'll perform"

Kaepernick at #36 - "may not start in 2011, but that's OK. He's a project

Mallett at #74 - "has JaMarcus Russell-like character concerns and a Byron Leftwich-like release. There's upside, but that's about it.":

So, it doesn't sound as if walterfootball.com was sold on any of these quarterbacks as having "franchise potential" or even rising above "mediocrity" (to use their own term). Sort of idiotic to question the intelligence of those who agree with you...

As an aside, they also offered these stunning gems of analyses:

About the Mallett pick: "I have no doubt in my mind that Belichick doesn't plan on playing Mallett at all. He's going to trade him in a year or two to a quarterback-hungry team for a much higher pick" - Really. Tom Brady as the starter...signed through 2014...and they figured that out all on their own?

About Cam Newton: "I don't think he'll ever be great..I liken Cam Newton to Vince Young. Like Young, Newton possesses an amazing skill set, but doesn't appear to love the game of football enough to put hundreds of hours into film study...[but] has the intangibles to be a great leader for this Carolina franchise" - So, he doesn't have the heart or motivation for the game? This just in..those are the "intangibles". "Tangibles" are the skills...

    Idiots...

Hilarious. So the Bills were dumb to bypass taking a QB, but the QB's taken after Newton all had serious question marks.

And Belicheat will have to play Mallett if he wants to trade him. No one will trade for him until they've seen him play. And the only way that will happen is if Brady gets injured for an extended period of time.

  11. Rudolph has great hands and I am a big fan and would have loved to see him on the Bills.

Reality: Rudolph has health concerns as he tore his hamstraing from the bone last year along with the injuries from the prior year. He is not a blocker at this point.

I think Buddy and Chan figured this was a Free Agency position where one addtional tight end can supplement or replace Chandler, Stupar and Nelson.

Don't count-out Chandler. He's huge (6'7" and 270#), runs a 4.78 40-yard, is an excellent blocker and finished 17th in receiving yards (2nd among TE's) in Iowa history. He joined the Bills mid-season and could be a big factor in the passing game this year.

  12. Muscle weighs more than fat, so keep that in mind. I want him professionally trained to build muscle only & turn him into that mutated guy from the Resident Evil that was indistructable that carries the helicopter gun, that's my evil plan.

Muscle is more dense, so for the same volume as fat, you have a higher mass (weight). Volume isn't so important here and if he was training and eating right, he was losing fat.

  13. Lots of glare huh? Can't address all the holes.

    1. There really were no impact TE's in this draft. The top TE got away but I would rather have Sheppard at ILB than a TE. We really need help at ILB.

    2. If they picked a top QB or a top Tackle then they would not have Dareus. Your choice --- Dareus or Gabbert, Locker, Ponder, Solder, Costanzo. I think they made the best pick possible at #3. No issue there. None of the guys named were there at 34.

    3. At # 34 there were a few RTs that really may be no better than the guy we got in the fourth round. We picked a top rated DB instead that can play corner or nickel or safety. He will be on the field right away. I think they did great.

Still ... it is going to take a few more drafts to put this team in the upper echelon. As you correctly stated, there are many needs.

Rudolph needed hamstring surgery and played in only 6 games last season (he missed 3 games as a sophomore). Moreover, he's not a good blocker. I'd only advocate taking a guy who is a great pass-catcher and blocker that high, and Rudolph is neither, much less both. Besides, there are several dual-threat TE's in FA, and if you really need a pass-catching TE, Greg Olsen is probably still available for trade.
