  1. This is just not true. When a young kid is at the game, and people around him are drunk and/or swearing, it ruins the game and also scars the child for life. I've read it here thousands of times, so it must be true. (Many of the games of my youth were marked by experiences similar to yours, and I loved every second of it. My father let me take it all in, and I knew that wasn't how "normal" people behaved. It was still fun to watch. I remember some of the tailgating and the drunks and the fights more than some of the games. It didn't take away from the football, it ADDED to the experience. Great times!)
  2. It's possible that the "accident" itself was politically motivated. Marshawn probably sensed that the girl in the street was Canadian, thought about their free health care and liberal gay stance and lax marijuana laws...And he said "Not in my town, tutz!" Growing up in a poorer part of Oakland, and attending college in Berkeley, Marshawn has basically been up to his eyeballs in conservative ideals since he was a youngster. On the football field or the occasional quail hunt is really the only time he can relax and not feel he has to push the GOP agenda.
  3. Oh yeah...I forgot...It'd be a best-of-5 putting contest
  4. Imagine if FIFA ran the US Open: Soccer / Golf 90 minutes / 72 holes 30 minute OT / 18 hole OT Penalty Shootout / Putting Contest
  5. I don't know man...I saw it this AM again, and didn't really think it was a foul, but now that you and buftex are saying Kobe got him pretty good, I just saw the highlight again and I just don't see much there. It wasn't super slow motion but I thought Kobe definitely got a piece of the ball. Pierce never hesitates to let the refs know what's on his mind, and I didn't see him get too worked up over the non-call. Ah well, no matter what we think it's water under the bridge at this point...
  6. What was the bad no-call? The reach by Kobe at the end to knock it away? I thought that was a "play on," but who really knows what constitutes a foul anymore....Tough spot for the refs actually, because if they let it go and the Lakers get the steal/breakaway, the game is essentially over. If they whistle it, Pierce gets two freebies to tie the game because of a feather-foul 40 feet from the basket. My preference is to let that stuff go and put it on the players to protect the ball. Pierce has made a meal of several light contact moments in the series to get himself to the line...He must be watching the Euro soccer championships! The refs are human, it's impossible not to get influenced by the crowd, and I think the home team would always get that call. In Boston, it's likely that Pierce goes to the line (or vice versa, if it was Kobe dribbling last night, it's probably called.) Not necessarily right, but it's true.
  7. It will definitely be tough for him...Just playing within the Tiger Circus is intimidating enough, but even more so when Rocco is hitting his drives 265 yds and Tiger is pounding them 320. Hell, Tiger can hit his 3-wood 290....
  8. He is incredible... Had to be even money if you bet on the tee that he'd make birdie... Odds probably less than that over his 3rd shot from 105 yds in the rough... I don't know anybody who would bet against him missing that putt.... Great setup by the USGA and Torrey Pines making the last three holes incredible drama
  9. I fully realize we are likely watching the greatest to ever play the game of golf every time Tiger is on the course. That is not lost on me. However, the 5-hour beejay that is bestowed upon him by the commentators on Saturday is reaching the point of unbearable. (Trust me, I also realize that those commentators and their producers know where their bread is buttered...So I can understand it to a point.) Two incidents yesterday that rubbed me the wrong way: -Tiger was probably on the 11th hole, in 4th place, probably 3 or 4 shots behind Rocco Mediate at that point. Lee Westwood was probably on the 15th or 16th hole, and he made a nice putt for birdie I believe. Johnny Miller said, "You know, I think this is the guy Tiger really needs to watch out for, he's got that smooth putting stroke working this week." I couldn't believe it! Tiger was in 4th place at the time, several shots out of the lead, and the announcers are mentioning the guys that Tiger needs to watch out for. (Obviously it turned out to be very prophetic, as they are now in the final group, so I'll definitely give Miller props for that...But at the time, it was such a slap in the face to Rocco Mediate and the other two players who were ahead of Woods.) -When one commentator remarked after Tiger hit a drive and grimmaced, "Folks, what you are watching goes beyond what you saw with Willis Reed or Kirk Gibson." Please buddy. He's playing golf. Sure his knee hurts, but if it REALLY was a problem, he'd be shooting 80 instead of 70...Or more likely, laying at his home in Orlando watching on TV. He's grimmacing in pain after he hits his drive 320 yards. Spare me the dramatic comparisons. Gibson didn't make another at-bat in the '88 World Series, and Willis Reed played about 2 minutes in that game 7. Those were two players who were PUTTING OFF SURGERY and legitimately giving everything they had to inspire their teammates to a title. To compare Tiger's surgically repaired knee FROM APRIL to those guys is a joke. Once again, I respect Tiger and it is IMPOSSIBLE to argue that anyone else is better. He is BY FAR the best player in the world. But take a look at that leaderboard today and tell me if there's ANYBODY ELSE worth even betting on. They will likely all crumble under the aura of Tiger like they always do. 14-for-14 in winning majors with the lead entering the final round is INCREDIBLY impressive. 0-for-whatever else when trailing entering the final round of a major is so weird for a player of his caliber. Count me in the crowd that loves watching him play and DEFINITELY appreciates his talents...But I'll admit that the media constantly and unabashedly kneeling before their king has turned me off. Let's go ANYBODY ELSE today! Please Rocco get it done!!!
  10. A successful, hard working, down-to-earth man whose death will be mourned....His life will be celebrated. I'll cheers to you Tim, a Buffalo boy who did it well and did it the right way.
  11. It's very easy to say that since the East Aurora police let you and your friends off when you were drinking in a field, Lynch and his teammates have had the same "everything works out fine with the cops" experiences. It's simply not true, and is fairly short-sighted to think that. "Manning up" to underage drinking is much different from potentially being suspended from your job or possibly having a multi-million dollar contract voided.
  12. I'm not saying you shouldn't have been disappointed by their performance. But they were overrated by whom? The United States media? A bunch of fans who get excited when they beat Costa Rica and Guatamala in qualifying? I don't think that roster of players had any other nation too worried. I know I wasn't expecting them to advance out of their group. Their failure to advance was expected by many. It was simply American arrogance to think that ANY game against a World Cup-caliber team should be an automatic win. Just because we throw more money at our national program than Ghana doesn't mean that we should beat them.
  13. Italy is coming off a 3-0 loss, why wouldn't Romania be playing to win? The US was badly outplaying the Italians in WC '06, then got a red card, and even scored the game winner with 10 men- only to be disallowed for a player in an offsides position screening the goalie. Game finished 1-1 but was definitely advantage USA. And the US certainly played to win against Argentina last week.
  14. Personally, since I don't have all the facts, I am witholding judgement until Curt Schilling weighs in with his opinion on Lynch. Only then will I have enough information to decide my stance.
  15. Ah, I didn't catch that....It's highly possible (probable) that I was grabbing a beer at the time!
  16. Also: MVP- Ovechkin, WSH Pearson- Ovechkin, WSH (player of year, voted by players) Selke- Datsyuk, DET Lady Byng- Datsyuk, DET Coach- Boudreau, WSH Norris- Lidstrom, DET Vezina- Brodeur, NJ Masterson- Blake, TOR (sportsmanship and dedication to the sport) King Clancy- Lecavalier, TAM (sportsmanship and community service)
  17. The Hawks weren't scared away by his size, and Kane delivered with a solid year 1. Always good to see a Buffalo kid getting it done.
  18. I love the fact that he cites budgetary figures for the source of his NASA outrage, and yet his advice is to "go to medical school to do some real good." Because the medical and insurance industries are the most fiscally responsible. No fraud, waste, and price gouging to be found there...
  19. Did they say "Largest 1st quarter lead in NBA Finals history"? Love Odom's game when he's playing with confidence. He can be such a mismatch.
  20. I can't believe Queen Isabella of Spain wasted all that money on Columbus' "fun project" to sail around the world. But I see where you're coming from. NASA is just a pet project for geeks to fire rockets. Exploration, research, and understanding the quantum physics of the universe have no redeeming values. I'm positive our lives would be SO MUCH BETTER if that 0.8% was not wasted on the space program, because it's clear that every penny of the other 99.2% of the budget is spent so wisely for the betterment of the common man.
  21. Nah, not too much talking at all...This was the first night of the tour so I'm sure they were focusing on the tunes and the sound. They are playing in Tampa tonight, and then heading up to TN to headline the Bonnaroo Festival. Eddie told the crowd they looked great, gave props to the openers Kings of Leon, pretty much stuck to the basics. He was in grunge mode, an old school flannel and jeans on with a trucker hat on a humid night in FL. He was also drinking pretty good...A few big bottles of something, couldn't tell if it was a big growler of beer or if he was chugging down wine...
  22. I was back on the lawn with the unwashed. I'm a man of the people, baby! A few friends of mine were in Section 7, we were going to try to do the old "slide back the ticket stubs" for our crew, but the lawn was great...Not wet from the earlier rain, nice grass, nice sight lines to the stage, and a few big screens for viewing. Very comfortable, nice night, rocking show!
  23. The difference is, Wagner will see Borowski's $4M and raise him to $10.5M The Mets are a very unlikeable team. For the past 2-3 years, the Mets had pretty much taken over the NYC baseball spotlight from the Yanks. Their players have been acting and talking in the media like they had actually won something. There seems to be an attitude of entitlement in their clubhouse, which when coupled with their uninspired and undisciplined play, makes them VERY hard to like, watch, and listen to. Somehow Jose Reyes went from possibly the best and most electric player in the game to being just the 3rd or 4th best shortstop in his own division. David Wright is the man and could play for my team 8 days a week.
  24. I was there! Great show. Only the 2nd time I've seen Pearl Jam, last time was 12 years ago. Kings of Leon ripped it up also.
  25. Yes, agreed about Doc...Hilarious that the media and Celtics fans thought he was a TOTAL buffoon three weeks ago when they were struggling with Atlanta, but apparently he "got smarter" in the last 20 days as his team took a 2-0 lead in the Finals. Just like he was the absolute worst coach last year when the Celtics won 15 games, and he's Coach of the Year now when they have three Hall of Famers on their roster. People are so short-sighted. Phil is a good coach, if only for two things: His ability to keep his MEGA stars happy (every team has stars, but Phil has dealt with some players who have been sports and cultural phenomenons) and his ability to maximize the output and energy of mid-tier players that are CRUCIAL to a championship team. It's no conincidence that Lamar Odom is playing the best ball of his life with the Lakers (not yet in this series though.) Same for Rodman, Ron Harper, etc. with the Bulls.
