Microbrews get WAAAAAAAYYY too much credit in my opinion. They are in it to turn a profit, just like any other business, and if they could actually sell enough beer and work the logisitics, they would ALL become macrobrews in a heartbeat. You sound like the guy who could drink the same beer twice, and you'd trash the one you thought was brewed by A-B and fawn over the one you thought was from Turtle Shell Brewery. I am a HUGE fan of beer and am not ashamed to appreciate many of the fine macrobrews. I've had some good micros, and I've had plenty that were certifiably disgusting. I hate when a beer tastes like shiit and then some beer snob tells me I don't appreciate "the art of the craft," like I'm missing something. I don't question why some like to drink a thick black stout that costs $7 just because it came from some small brewery in Portland. As such, I also don't require justification from anyone else when I throw back a Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Anyone know where I can fnd public school rankings
LongLiveRalph replied to zevo's topic in Off the Wall Archives
City of Buff district is last (deservedly so I'm sure,) but City Honors HS is widely recognized as one of the best in the nation in the annual comprehensive study done by Newsweek (or is it Time Magazine?) Hutch Tech is also a very solid school. -

what is the latest on the honey bee crisis?
LongLiveRalph replied to The Poojer's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Good question Poojer and thanks for the info Avenger. I was talking about this with my father over July 4th weekend, but both us had a very limited understanding of CCD and like Poojer, neither of us had heard any recent updates in about six months. I did watch a doc on the commercial bee keepers a few years ago. It was very compelling and was an industry I was completely oblivous to. It's so crazy to think about all of the "end result" products we expect to be available everyday without ever once considering the process. -
In yet? I've been finished for five minutes.

"And so the Bills pick up 3 yards on a short pass on 3rd & 4, and they'll have to punt it away again."

The Best T-shirt You've Ever Owned
LongLiveRalph replied to LongLiveRalph's topic in Off the Wall Archives
HAHAHA umm...yes it's a joke! Nah man, I'm actually a pretty good speller and I had NO CLUE it was ridiculous....Just looked it up....I think I've been spelling it wrong forever! Thanks -
Concert t-shirt from Lollapalooza in Toronto, 1992... Part of what made it such a great shirt was the great time I had there...REDICULOUS bands (Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Ice Cube, Porno for Pyros, Cypress Hill, Stone Temple Pilots, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Rage Against the Machine to name a few!) and a REDICULOUS good time...I was 16 years old, took a few days off from the summer job framing houses, and went up to Toronto with my four best friends from high school in our buddy's mom's minivan. Great tunes, lots of laughs, good smoke, and cold brews. The shirt was super soft, perfect fit, and other than some frays on the neck and sleeves, there were none of those loose threads that you pull and keep pulling. It held together amazingly well considering all the times it was worn and washed. The print graphics were faded but still readable (that's how I was able to name the bands above!) It also had a few subtle marks of character & experience (a.k.a. stains) which made it even better. I had the shirt for 16 years (half my life!) and this past weekend I was at a buddy's lakehouse for the 4th of July festivities...I was out on the dock loading up the boat when a friend of mine started goofing off, pushed our other friend in the lake and then came at me...He tried to toss me in, but like a ninja I spun around him and his momentum was carrying him into the water...And in doing so he grabbed out, grabbed my shirt, stretched and ripped it, and pulled me into the lake. That night, we had about 15 friends sitting around the bonfire, great tunes, lots of laughs, good smoke, and cold brews...Seemed like a fitting time to toss it in the fire and officially lay to rest a great t-shirt. (A close 2nd is an old school royal blue Sabres t-shirt I've had since college...It was a size small to begin with, then shrunk even more in the dryer...It was the t-shirt I used to give to girls in college when they "slept over." There was something about waking up next to a half naked Long Island girl wearing a blue & gold Sabres t-shirt that really got me "up" in the morning!)

Baseball not so popular in Washington DC
LongLiveRalph replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Baseball fans in the area have likely been longtime fans of the Orioles, a well-established franchise whose games appear on the same network. That has to have some effect. If the Expos moved to Providence, RI and their games were carried by NESN, I'm not sure too many people would've converted from being Red Sox fans, especially if the team was still trotting out the same Triple-A talent they had in Montreal. DC is the kind of town where as soon as the Nats are good, it will be the thing to do, and the place to be seen, and ratings will be great. For the record, I wouldn't waste 5 seconds watching Washington this season, much less 3 hours. Pathetic. -
Wade Phillips already on the way out in Dallas
LongLiveRalph replied to /dev/null's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hahaha Yes my thoughts exactly. I was a big fan of Wade with the Bills, and he only looks better considering the half-assed hires we've made since then. Love the "Only winning cause it's Parcells' team" arguments. Speaking of a coach who can't win in the playoffs....That Cowboys team would've crumbled under Parcells last year...Fat Bill was already losing the T.O. battle, and he likely would've blown a gasket when the Jessica Simpson rumors popped up. After a hot start replacing Bledsoe, Romo struggled his 2nd half of the season in '06 when Parcells was the coach, and the Tuna wasn't exactly "nurturing" his young QB along. -
Not necessarily.... The kid does live in Queens...Howard Stern should bring him on board as the newest Wack Pack member! He and beetle can go trolling for snatch.

Whitner's Guarantee
LongLiveRalph replied to Cotton Fitzsimmons's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Didn't I just say I fully expect them to be in 2nd place in the East and challenging for a Wild Card spot? I think that's pretty confident, all things considered. As for the Pats, the team we have beaten once since 2000 (when Milloy hand delivered their playbook to Gregg Williams) I am excited that we will go 2-0 against the team that lost 1 game last year. If that happens, then you're probably right, we will make the playoffs. And Cotton says Trent to the Pro Bowl, huh? Wow, the guarantees are coming hot and heavy now. Let me try....I guarantee no NFL player gets arrested this coming season. -
Also, not to defend the Dookie, cause I hate them too....But another fellow Dookie for the LAC, Maggette, is likely moving elsewhere for big bucks. It's hard to blame Brand for leaving when he watches them lose one of their major athletic components in exchange for an expensive, aging, injury-prone vet. Plus, getting into the East, where the Celts are the team to beat (at least for 1 more year) I would say Philly has a better chance to make the playoffs (and potentially advance) than the Clippers do in the West. Detroit will still be a factor but they are looking more worn down every year, and the Cavs could've really used a guy like Brand, but they are trying to save space to at least make an offer to LeBron with the BIG cash

Whitner's Guarantee

hahaha yes! "I guarantee that if the Patriots rest their starters in the last game, we will get to 8-8." -
Whitner's Guarantee
LongLiveRalph replied to Cotton Fitzsimmons's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hey man...The Bills had 7 wins last year. One blowout win vs. the Dolphins was the only real beatdown, and they handled the Bengals alright. Other than that, they played three squeakers against the Jets and Fins, and easily could've lost any one of those games to teams with a combined 5-27 record. They also beat the Redskins on a semi-miracle, after doing nothing for 59:30. They got 6 INT's and still lost to the Cowboys. They are, as they have been for the majority of the last decade, unproven at the most important position on the field (although they are far from alone in this category.) If you want to assume the Bills get it done in the East, I applaud your optimism. I'm going to assume they're playing for a Wild Card, seeing as the Patriots are still largely intact and the Bills didn't even want to be on the same field as them last year. I do feel, with health and some nice performances by Edwards, Lynch, the D-line, and Poz, the Bills should be in 2nd place in the East and challenging (with many others) for a Wild Card playoff spot. But with one winning record in 7 seasons, I'm not going to start assuming division titles. I wasn't knocking the Bills, I was merely trying to figure on the most realistic way they could make good on Whitner's comments. I listed the games that, at the moment, look like MUSTS. I don't think I was too out there. Notice Donte didn't guarantee 13-3 and a division title. -
Boozer committed to not opting out of his contract so that the Cavs could clear a little cap space, and then the Cavs promised to give him big bucks after the next season. It was a handshake both ways...Then Boozer opted out anyways and took big bucks with the Jazz. Kind of a scumbag move, especially after the Cavs had their first good season in a while and LeBron and Boozer seemed to be the future of something promising. Of course, on the flip side, there were also no guarantees that the Cavs would've honored their handshake if Boozer ripped up his knee 10 games into the next season. So I guess you just chalk it up to business. If I was Elton Brand, I can't say I'd be that excited about the 46 games that Baron Davis will be healthy for next season, not that Philly has much to be excited about either. It's too bad for the Clip that Shaun Livingston had that devastating leg/knee injury (I'm sure it's on youtube if you haven't seen it, but it's not for the weary.) He was a smooth, big point guard who was really coming into his own before the injury at the end of the 06-07 season. He missed all of 07-08 and no one really knows how he'll be this year.

Whitner's Guarantee
LongLiveRalph replied to Cotton Fitzsimmons's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Somebody needs to break it to Donte that the Bills have not been transferred to the NFC this season. It's possible an AFC team could win 10 games and not get in. Let's assume the Pats get it done in the East. Therefore, the Bills are automatically playing for one of two Wild Cards. It's certainly not out of the question, but going at it with 12 other teams for 2 playoff spots isn't easy. It's made all the more difficult considering that they only have 7 home games, have road trips to fellow playoff hopefuls Jacksonville, Kansas City, and Denver, and they play Cleveland at home on national TV. The Bills in the playoffs means they CANNOT slip up in their winnable home games (Raiders, Jets, Browns, 49ers, & Miami in Toronto) are all MUSTS...And I think they have to get at least one, but maybe two, wins against the Seahawks, Chargers, and Pats (New England may be resting guys in week 17.) A .500 record on the road is pretty good in the NFL...So a minimum of 6-2, or possibly 7-1, will be required at home. I didn't really know what to make of Whitner's comments. I suppose I like the confidence/leadership angle, but truthfully, it was hard not to laugh when I heard the guarantee. Besides Evans, they are still very young at their skill positions...Perhaps Donte would've been better off guaranteeing a top-5 defense or something like that. -
Ummm....Didn't they learn that you can bring in a vet QB and go 13-3???
-
Didn't they also include the Redskins as a potential in the NFC? They cited uncertainty with young Campbell, a backup who won 4 straight to get them to the playoffs, and an owner who likes the "big splash" signing.
-
The part that angers me is, for the second straight year, Darcy has said, "We are shocked at some of the salaries being thrown around in the open market." Why is he shocked??? This is the third straight offseason it's happened, since they were shocked by Danny Briere's $5 mil arbitration ruling. Yet he's still playing his typical reactionary role, wishing that these high salaries didn't exist. They scoffed at $5 mil per season for Campbell. You've got to think, at the end of that 5-year deal, that $5 mil for Soupy in 2012 and 2013 would look like a steal. Friggin Mike Commodore is now a $4 mil per year player for Gods sake!!!!!! I'm tired of hearing the Sabres talk about other teams overpaying. It's called market value, you stooges. And I'm tired of them not making a trade or a signing unless they feel they come out on top 70/30.

That's big money to spend...But at least the guy has been an All Star and been a major part of some teams who made deep playoff runs. He will log minutes, play average D, and be an asset on the PP. There are going to be other defensmen in the coming days who have had mediocre-to-solid careers and are going to be in the $4.5 mil per season range. Its getting crazy again, and it only reinforces the money that can be saved by extending your players before they hit the open market.
