Did you know Subway also sells wraps??? This is BULLSH*T!!!!

I don't disagree with you. However, their job is to sell advertising for their station, not to tell people what they should get excited about. Like I said, I'm sure they will discuss the game in detail. They have plenty of time to do so. It just so happened that for the 15 minutes that jahbonas was listening this morning, they weren't talking about what he wanted to hear. So it goes in radio. You also have to consider that it was UB's second time on ESPN2 in two weeks. Their next two games are on ESPNU. They won a conference championship game on national TV last year, and played in a bowl game. In an ironic twist, shouldn't UB football be excited that playing on national TV doesn't exactly qualify as "OH MY GOD" territory anymore?

In a 3 or 4 hour radio show, I'm sure they'll get around to it. I have to imagine that discussing sub-.500 football teams and their mistake-prone performances has grown tiresome for all sports commentators and journalists in Buffalo this fall. In a stadium with capacity of 30,000, the announced attendance was 13,000- which probably means about 9,000 were actually there. It's tough to blame 30% capacity on radio hosts who don't have Buffalo ties. Plus, it's a call in show. If listeners want to discuss it, they will. And the Jimmy the Greek show was pretty darn good.

Buy the cheapest Sabres tickets you can find, not a bad seat in the house. Depending on weather and records, you can likely find a Bills ticket for free from a season ticket holder who's fed up, or find a real cheap scalper the day of the game in the lots. The other consideration is that the Sabres will be on TV, it's likely that the Bills will not. Might be nice just to relax with some family and friends and watch hockey, then gather up some other die-hards and hit the Ralph!

Anyone got tonight's Syracuse hoops score?
LongLiveRalph replied to Lori's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I didn't pretend my research was anything more than a 20-minute scan of Brown's coaching career and SBU's pursuit of him. He seems to have been pretty successful at a young age, and Bonaventure sure seemed pretty high on him before he declined their offer, and their 2nd offer, and decided to keep his family at home in Albany rather than uproot them cross-state. As for my hypothetical, it was just that- a hypothetical. And it was simply stated to put the writer in a position similar to Brown's, as far as career choices and such. The guy Vinny seemed awfully angry that Brown didn't exactly view the job at SBU (coming off a horrid scandal and a 2-win season) to be career advancement. Then he seemed angry that Brown didn't want to discuss the taunts from the student section, and called him a liar when Brown used the famous coachspeak "I don't hear that stuff" like every other coach does. I didn't get the article's point. Like I said, I had no idea about Brown or SBU's courtship. Even without knowing the history, it read like a high school girl's note to her friend in math class about the boy who dumped her. "He's such a liar!! I'm so much better without him..." I have always found sportswriters to be among the most open-minded and warm-hearted people, never bringing their baggage or perceived slights or hidden agendas to their work.... I'd probably check with Brown's players and the Albany A.D. before I asked anybody at the Times Union. -
That's great news for the SEC quarterbacks! Coming from those southern schools, Canada would be too cold.

Wow. I didn't know anything about Albany hoops, Coach Will Brown, or the touchy situation with the slighted girlfriend, SBU. So I did a little research. Man, does that article come off jaded. So... A successful coach at a university used the interest of another university as leverage for a raise??? Noooooooo I don't believe it, that never happens. A coach suggested that the student section may not have been the definition of class when they were chanting taunts about his wife and children?? And he pretended he didn't hear it (in St. Bonaventure's high school gym) so he wouldn't have to discuss it with Jaded Local Reporter?? I'm sure that's never happened either. And he decided to stay in the state capital, with recruiting ties to NYC/LI/Philly and the northeast, in a winnable conference, at a school that he has guided to two NCAA tournaments in the last 5 years? Instead of coming to a religious school with a tarnished basketball program in Olean, NY, scraping the bottom of the A-10 while trying to convince JUCO transfers and the 3rd-best player on high school teams to come to a small school in the middle of nowhere, where you will be the only 12 black people on campus??? How could he turn that down??? What happens when this reporter feels underpaid after years of successful articles? I'm sure he wouldn't use an offer from the sports department at the Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin as leverage for more money. I'm sure it'd be easy for him to move himself and his family across the state to a desireable location like Binghamton, how could he even waver on that decision? And I'm sure that when Binghamton basketball team made a trip to St. Bonaventure, he'd feel fine if the Bonnies student section heckled him about his last article and insulted his wife and kids. Strange article with an obvious anger toward somebody who, from what my 20 minutes of research digs up, seems like an okay guy and career basketball junkie. If he's going to jump down people's throats for "lying", he should do it when somebody says that they're looking forward to spending their next 10 years in Olean, NY. -
Blue and gold...Go Sabres!!

There is a trainer out in LA by the name of Marinovich who I think could really take your boy to the next level.

Either these recruiting ratings are way off, or Weis is a horrible coach. They continue to bring in top-ranked recruits and continue to lose to every halfway decent team they play. I can't imagine Navy had too many 5-Star Recruits or ESPN Hot 100 recruits or whatever the ratings are. That arrogant prick Weis should've been fired two years ago.

A low-scoring snoozefest with overrated teams and awful quarterback play? Ahhh yes, the good ol' SEC.

Chad Ochocinco Up To His Old Tricks
LongLiveRalph replied to H2o's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This drab league definitely needs more of this stuff. The same-ness of all the players and teams, the "canned" answers in press conferences, it does make you numb to the NFL, as Jerry Sullivan wrote today in his column. I can't stand the Jets, and as such, I am forced to hate their tubby head coach. But I wouldn't mind if the league had more coaches like him. A little fire, a few swear words, and some friendly banter certainly makes the week more exciting. I think Chad Cinco is hilarious. -
No question...I'm not sure of the "correct" way to determine the playoff teams, or if there is a "correct" way...As was mentioned above, there's 100+ teams with a 12 game season. But if you've got a leaky faucet, wouldn't you attempt a solution that could at least slow the leak? You don't just shrug your shoulders and say "What's the difference, it's still going to be broken anyways" and then cover your eyes and forget about it. I'll be happy when we aren't automatically casting aside undefeated teams on October 8th because of the perception of their remaining schedule compared to the perception of another team's schedule. Is it unreasonable to say that Cincinnatti would be undefeated right now with Florida's schedule? Or Penn State's? How would we ever know? At least the other flawed system (figure 8 team playoff) would increase championship eligibility by 300% which would answer the majority of the questions on the field. I also think a trickle-down benefit would be better regular season scheduling. Teams would see the value of a big non-conference win, while coupled with less risk of a loss ruining your title hopes in week 2. I think we can all agree that gripes about being #9 hold less water than gripes about being left out of the top 2, or never really being considered in the first place.

Agreed and agreed. I think as long as the NCAA keeps raking in the money, they enjoy the conversation, debate, and argument. And let's face it, there's not a sports talk host in the world who doesn't LOVE the current system, because it gives them and their listeners something to get all worked up about. You definitely have to give props to the BCS for a few games...Namely, OSU-Miami '01, Texas-Michigan '04, Texas-USC '05, Boise St-Oklahoma '06...Those were all-time classic games that never would've happened under the old system. However...When you're halfway thru the season in mid-October, and people are already stating the 4-5 teams who have a REAL shot at playing for the National Championship, completely leaving out undefeateds like Cincy and Boise and TCU, while also stating that a 1-loss Florida or USC would STILL get a bid over those teams, really makes it a joke. They've always stood behind their "mid-major" argument that teams like Utah or Boise don't have the week-to-week grind that the big boys have...Yet it appears that justification extends to even BCS conferences, as the Big East champ apparently doesn't warrant consideration either. They basically argue in circles around the system they created. The perceived "lesser" programs have proven that they can hang. And they've done it pretty consistently, not only playing good ball, but actually winning games. In fact, the only mid-major to ever lose a BCS game was Hawaii, who got manhandled by UGA. The Big East has an excellent BCS bowl record. And in Utah's case last season, they DOMINATED the team that was #1 in the country for pretty much the entire fall. Those things seem to be forgotten as once again, Alabama wins their 12-9 conference games and stays at the top of the heap. I'm not claiming that Boise State could win 11 games playing in the SEC, but maybe they could. We know for sure that they could beat Florida or Alabama or Iowa or Oregon (they did) on any given day. Which is the nature of football- playing once that week and being at your best, no excuses...Which is why a three week playoff would be incredible...

Today's Buffalo News! -
I don't really buy the "We had our hearts set on the national title." Good for you Alabama, unfortunately so did Florida. Beat the Gators and you would've been there. There's no excuse for them to lay down in any game. I think the fact that college football teams are off for 40 days before they play these bowl games is a more legit factor for a poor performance, but the delay is the same for both teams. If the reason for losing is, "We didn't really care about the Sugar Bowl" then in my opinion, that's not championship-caliber attitude or coaching in the first place. I definitley hear you about the OOC scheduling. But if Oregon finishes 11-1 and is in the top-5 at the end of the season, the NCAA would look disgraceful leaving Boise out of it. But it wouldn't be unheard of. Same thing for leaving an undefeated Cincinnati out...Call the Big East what you will, IT'S STILL A BCS CONFERENCE!!! (Only yelling because many analysts seem to forget this when they lump Cincy in with the "mid-majors.") Also, with regard to scheduling, let's face it...An undefeated Penn State would play for the national title...They were ranked as high as #4 when they were 3-0. Their non-conference games are Akron, Syracuse, Temple, and Eastern Illinois. Is the Big Ten REALLY that good, that simply beating Iowa and Ohio State (both at home) plus a bunch of dogs would've gotten them a shot at the title, over a team like Cincinnatti? But what can ya do? Just hope for as many undefeateds as possible I suppose, to further highlight the ridiculousness of the system.

Roy Williams sounding off on Romo
LongLiveRalph replied to Glass To The Arson's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
With the underwhelming QB play in today's NFL, Romo is certainly one of the better ones. If he was better as a holder on FG's, he'd actually have that elusive postseason win. It's just the nature of ESPN life today to immediately crown someone the greatest or throw him to the lions. Part of Romo's success/failure drama is simply a result of playing for the Cowboys. Some of it, like dating starlets and posing for papparazzi and taking Mexican vacations in-season, Romo has brought on himself. They will love you and eat it up when you're winning, and criticize you for the same stuff you're losing. Like you said, he's a good QB. Same as Jimmy Clausen is a good QB for Notre Dame. But when you play for a lightning rod team like that, emotion takes over some people and they have to declare "SEE, I TOLD YOU HE'S GREAT" or "SEE, I TOLD YOU HE SUCKS" every Monday. -
I think Parrish compares pretty accurately to former Sabre Max Afinogenov. Incredible speed, but no feel for the game...Spectacular plays, mixed with erratic, spastic movements...Always waiting for the proverbial "light to turn on" or their "breakout" season...Equally dazzling and confounding...Could be the most explosive player on the field/ice or could be a healthy scratch...Could be valuable in the right situation, but have no real trade value...Could win a game for you as easily as they could lose it... Who knows the reasons why, but neither will ever be as successful and productive as they could/should be.
-
With all the talk about how Boise St. or Cincinnatti have no business in a national title game even if they're undefeated... Has the world completely forgotten that Alabama got rolled off the field and destroyed at the line of scrimmage by a non-BCS school last year? That bowl game seems to have been swept under the rug...What a joke...

Continuity like losing 8 straight division games between '08 and '09? Continuity like his 0-7 record vs. New England since he's been here? Say what you want about the Bills "beating" them in September, coaching could've sealed the deal in a game the players played well enough to win. Continuity like losing 92% of games against teams that finish that season with a winning record? (His record is 2-22, one win was against the NYJ in 2006 when they finished 10-6, and the other was vs. Wash in '07 when they finished 9-7. Great Dick.) Continuity like zero winning seasons since 2001? No thanks on continuity. What we need is a real GM with some fresh eyes, who's been in the game. Like Matt Millen.

Hmmm yeah that's strange by Boeheim...I hadn't heard any of his thoughts on this year's team, but he does usually pontificate about everything his teams do wrong...He usually talks about how great everyone else will be and how it's going to be a grind for Syracuse... I'm not on the committee, I don't know what they discuss, but it's hard to imagine that an exhibition not factored into the record would be considered 4 months and 35 games from now. Basically, two ways to look at it: (1) If they play all season like they did vs. Le Moyne, they won't need to worry what the committee thinks of them. (2) If it's a make or break decision and the committee is thinking back that far, then they'd probably be a #11 seed and it won't matter much anyways. -
There was a scrum during the game where Spikes's helmet got ripped off, that's probably what he's referring to, as he tries to justify why he was the 4th guy in on a tackle and made a conscious decision to try to blind somebody.
