Agreed. Maybe it's splitting a hair, but: There's no question, doubt, whatever, that last year's draftees will be better football players and athletes in '11 after a year of coaching, prep, weight room, film study, conditioning, etc., etc., etc. That's true whether they turn out to be Pro Bowlers or busts. The real question that can't be answered yet is whether the Bills will have a better defense BECAUSE they've had the extra year -- getting towards whether they're Pr Bowlers or busts. Wanny may have taken the Bills job because his family is staying in Pittsburgh (does he have school-age kids?) and Buffalo-Pitt is an easy commute. Who knows?

I never understand this. He's supposed to be fast and he's in pro football by the skin of his teeth. Why can't he play special teams? Too easily blocked? Too dumb to stay in his lane? Can't make an open-field tackle? Just doesn't want to?

The Bills were never compensated for Cousineau or Kelly, for good reason: it was their own fault they didn't sign them. The NFL doesn't compensate anybody for players not in the league. It only compensates when players move within the league -- free agents for draft choices.

For a long time I just scratched my head over strange picks (showing my age -- Reuben Gant? even Erik Flowers?). The first pick that made me scream out loud NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO was Whitner. And Maybin made me say WTF. Biggest jumps for joy were OJ and Bruce, but I was really happy about JD Hill too. He was a really nice player, very explosive in college at ASU.

It was actually Bill Enyart, but that's still a great nickname. Unfortunately he played like "Tremor." And the best set of simultaneous nicknames: at one time the Bills had a backfield of "The Juice" Simpson, Greg "Grape Juice" Jones, and "Earthquake" Enyart.

Different consideration for this year that's been widely reported: there may not be a 2011 season so people like Bud Adams don't want to spend a lot on a head coach that may not have anything to do in September. (Bud Adams may not want to spend a lot anyway.) Not saying myself that there won't be a season; I have no idea. Just saying.

Bo Roberson. John Rauch. . . . and who could forget Dale Ogas?

Every year there's a quarterback who was a decent enough player in November but in April the draftniks think he's the greatest of all time and they can't praise him enough. Players like this get better every day of the winter without even playing a game. Ryan Leaf was one of those guys, but so were Heath Shuler, Trent Dilfer, David Carr, Matthew Stafford . . . I include Eli Manning in this group. He benefits from a team that's set up for him but the guy just isn't great. In other words, you don't have to be a megabust like Leaf to be super-overrated on Draft Day (conceding Stafford may still work out). These guys by and large had NFL careers but they weren't anything special. Is Gabbert this year's draftnik idol?

The short answer is they manipulate the rosters to balance them out based on who accepts invitations to come. It probably means they had two many DE's on North and not enough on South.

I was flashing back to Darryl Talley, one of my favorite Bills and a really underrated linebacker. He was here when Bruce and Biscuit arrived but Talley was the guy who breathed fire and got the D stoked when the good times started in the late 80's. I really don't think Merriman is here after this season, but if he could be the new Talley when we add some quality players in the next few drafts . . .

Actually Ruud WAS a Number 1. I still lean toward Flowers even if he did get on the field. At least he's got to be the biggest reach ever -- Maybin may turn out to be the biggest bust but he was projected as a first-rounder. But then there's Phil Dokes . . .
