Would you recommend a move to Rochester?
Acantha replied to Acantha's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Thanks for the advice (the bulleted format was especially nice). What I quoted is what I'm trying to focus on right now. I have my gut opinions on both places, and I'm trying to wade through what people are saying about the areas and try to figure out what is standard complaining and what is cause for concern. My sister just moved to Rochester about 8 months ago and she loves it; says moving back was the best thing she did (she was in NYC and Tampa before that). My father moved to VA from WNY about 2 years ago and is all doom and gloom about it and says he wouldn't want to go back. I just figure the more opinions I get the more informed I can be. Thanks again. -
IMO, Raji is the only D lineman in the draft worth taking at 11. If he's there, they should be running to the podium.

Would you recommend a move to Rochester?
Acantha replied to Acantha's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Well, you narrowed down my choices to nothing!!! Just kidding. That's really what I'm afraid of as far as Greensboro. I love the Charlotte area and would go there if I could, but it's just not in the cards. I think even if I knew people in Greensboro, I wouldn't care about it being kind of desolate, but the way it is, I"m just not sure. Not worried about the job at all. I have no chance of getting laid off. Absolute worst case scenario if the job closed up shop, I'd be sent somewhere else to work. Yep, weather and taxes. The two downfalls of WNY. Can't get away from it. -

Thanks for the advice, and I agree. It doesn't really apply to me though. I haven't lived in NY since I was 12, so I'm not looking to regain any old feelings. It's more just reconnecting with my family from up there. And of course I would look forward to things like being able to get a good hotdog, or being in driving distance of the Bills and Syracuse basketball. Biased is what I'm looking for! See, if you had said, "Hell no, stay away!!!" I'd have reason to worry. -
I'm going to be moving around the end of this year/beginning of next year for work. I love living in Hawaii, but unfortunately I only get a few years out here. I've been waiting to find out where my job will have openings, and finally got some info on that yesterday. While there are openings around the country and I've thought about pretty much everywhere, I've decided that what I really want is to move back to the east coast to be closer to my whole family. I've been a 7+ hour plane ride from everyone for about 10 years and I want to spend some time back there. I have family in NY, VA, PA, NC, and FL, so anywhere on the east coast fills that requirement. So after seeing the openings, I've pretty much narrowed it down to either Rochester or Greesboro, NC. I could also go to St Petersburg/Tampa area, but while I do like that part of FL more than most, I'm pretty against moving back there. So... Rochester: I grew up outside Syracuse and have family and friends scattered between there and Rochester. While I never spent much time in Rochester, it still has a "going home" feeling to it. I generally know about the tax situation up there, especiallly property tax since I plan on buying a house wherever I go, and while it a concern, I"m not too worried about it. My biggest negative is the weather. I've lived in very temperate climates for a LONG time. Just remembering the winters from my childhood makes me shudder. Anyway, it always seems talking to people there gets answers all over the place. Some people love it, think it's a great area of the country to live and be with family. Others say they are trying anything they can to get out. So my question is, for those living in WNY, would you recommend the move? Anyone else out there that has moved away and really wants to get back? Why? Greensboro: I was really hoping for an opening in Charlotte, but it didn't end up happening. The only family I have in NC is in Charlotte, so it's really the only part of the state I know. I've been looking all over on-line, and there's very little information on it. Even though it's a fairly large city (3rd biggest in NC), it seems pretty slow. I know that I really like that area of the country for weather, environment, and people. Anyone happen to know anything about Greensboro? I appreciate any thoughts. I'm basically split right now and have to have some kind of idea by this time next week!

Public Service Notice for people on COBRA

It really is pure insanity. -
interesting proposal to split NY state
Acantha replied to drinkTHEkoolaid's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Eh...that's very easily rectified. All they need to do is put it in a bill called something like "The Bill to Make America More Better", and everyone will sign off on it. -
If you were building a team, what defensive position

Acantha replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is how I think of the question: On a scale of 1-10, the first player you pick is a 10, every other player is a 6.5. Which position to you pick for the 10. Doesn't have to be a realistic scenario to answer the question. Like most others, I go DT. A great DT can loosen up the whole field. -
Funny, I missed all the times the PAC-10 has traveled to the SEC. Oh, except for the one where Cal traveled to Tenn and got beat. Talk about a one sided argument. Outside of teams that are desperately seeking decent competition due to weak conferences (Ohio St.) or teams trying to help their recruiting base because they get destroyed in their conference (Oreg St., Tenn, etc...), the top teams don't travel. That's college football. Edit: I'll also throw in the teams that have stuck to rivalries, like USC vs ND (just an example).

Shamwow Guy Arrested For Beating Up A Hooker

Just goes to prove: Once you go scientology, you're f@#$ed. -
I could care less about the plaque, or any debate about Tebow's place in college history for that matter. But cincy, you obviously know absolutely nothing about the person Tebow is, and it's a damned shame that you're such an ass you will mouth off about a great kid for no other reason than to get a bit of pride out of you childish sarcasm. Normal, everyday stuff....yep.

Will libraries (as physical buildings) become obsolete?
Acantha replied to BuffaloBill's topic in Off the Wall Archives
But devices like Kindle are addressing those areas. It's not a computer or even a computer screen, it's a new technology. Trust me, I love books. But I think that anyone who says books will never be obsolete are just kidding themselves and not really paying attention to history. Big things, even staples of life, change. I don't think books are on the verge of disappearing, but I have no doubt that sometime in the future, as the technology progresses and it becomes more common place and comfortable, books will phase out. -
Or Diane Lane.

I'm really looking forward to his first game against the South Carolina. I'm not sure Spurrier has the guns to take him down, but he will give it everything he's got. This is the type of game that if he had the talent to dominate, he would run the score up into the hundreds if could. EDIT: Looks like they're playing on Halloween in South Carolina! Should be fun.

So the wife and I just bought our first home...
Acantha replied to RayFinkle's topic in Off the Wall Archives
If I move anywhere else, I'm going to have to do a lot more thinking and decide what I really want (the right mix of price/value) The Charlotte area is perfect for me though. I have a very good friend who has been a real estate agent for over 25 years. She sold my mother her house there and sold me the one I rent out. She'd be all about helping me get the lowest price I can. I also have family in the area I can stay with while I feel things out, so I'm willing to get turned down however much I need before finding a place.. I wouldn't put an offer in on a house I didn't want to live in, and I'm rational enough to not find myself in a "I gotta have it" situation. Now I just have to nail down a job in the area, and I can get started. Thanks for the advice. -

Acantha replied to RayFinkle's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Sounds like a good deal. The house I own is outside Charlotte, and if I may decide to move to that area when go. I know the boom wasn't big there, but the foreclosures are taking off and there are some good finds in the area from what I've seen. The seller taking a 10% (plus closing costs....nice) loss after only a year must have hurt. I've looked around the area and have seen houses for about 150 that I think I would want to bid about 125 on. Low, but if I'm patient I think I can come out real close to that. By the time I'm ready to buy there are going to be some deals. -

Acantha replied to RayFinkle's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Can't say that I did, but the first house I bought was an investment property that I rent out, so not really the same. After that the process seemed more boring than anything. Out of curiosity, if you don't mind me asking, what was the difference paid between the asking price and what you settled on? I'm probably going to be buying a home (to live in this time) at the end of the year and I'm interested in how low people are bidding in this market. Good luck with it. First time you pay that mortgage and realize it's going toward paying something of your own off instead of into someone else's pocket, it's a good feeling. -
Pettigrew is still my first choice, and I would like the pick if they took him in the first. I think DE is the bigger priority there, but there aren't any in this draft I consider good enough to (A) use that pick on, and (B) fill the need we have for an elite DE. If you've seen Pettigrew play, you know he can catch the ball and that he's tough as nails. Speed is his only issue, and speed aint everything.

Ingram would have been the #1 TE in the draft if he hadn't been injured. He was supposedly medically cleared to play the last two games, but there was no reason to take any chances with all that rust. Best I could say about him is that the talent is there, but it's at best a risk that might take time to pay off. If he were still around in the 3rd I'd be surprised, but it would be a no-brainer pick. 2nd? I don't know. Wouldn't hate the pick, but it's chancy. Can't say I know a whole lot about Case other than what I've read. Think I saw 1 Rice game this year and I can't remember him standing out.

I'm pretty sure he was told to reference us as North America's Team, and just kind of flubbed the line a couple times before getting it out. I think the presser made it crystal clear what everyone already knows. Owens was getting very little love from the NFL, Buffalo offered him a very good contract, it's a pretty decent situation position wise since Lee is there to help with coverages, and he was able to get a 1 year contract which allows him one year to make himself look like a saint so that he can bolt next year for one more big contract before he retires. I really hope there isn't anyone thinking he came to the Bills because of any love he has for the organization, city, team, players, etc... And there's really no need to believe that. All that matters is if he helps the team win. We can all debate about that, but we'll find out next season. If nothing else, it will be fun to watch.
-
I think it's more likely that he pitches a fit at Trent for checking down too much (if TE comes out as he did the second half the year instead of the first half). I don't see any way possible Trent is able to get TO the ball enough to keep his crap from coming out. But we'll see. As much as I don't want TO on the team, this one signing automatically makes every other position on the team better. No way can defenses stack the box with Evans and Owens out there. The line will have easier schemes to deal with, RB's should have more room, Edwards has more options. If they can somehow make it work where no one else has been able to, it could be a good deal.

Good job on the line on ESPN BTW. They actually gave you time to complete thoughts and get a full information out which is always nice.
