Okay, so I did understand what you were saying. I guess I wasn't very clear with my tounge in cheek comment. I don't know what the recruiting budget difference is between A&M, SMU, Baylor and Tech, but since A&M fell off the face of the earth, it has only been a matter of time before another team stepped up. There's too much talent in Texas to only have 1 dominant school. I agree that Leach is a good coach and is doing good things at Texas Tech. And I think almost any coach could go to USC and have a championship contender every year. But I don't think that Leach is doing the same things as guys like Peterson, Gill, and Kelly. There's just too much home grown talent around him.

Ummmm, yes. That's why I said Texas. But now I have no idea what you're talking about.
-
At least you're not blamed when the board crashes. That would suck.
-
Much better, IMO.

It is, and I'm not knocking the guy...too much, anyway. I'm not saying he's a bad coach, I just wouldn't call him the best. He plays in a weak conference (The Pac-10 can generally offer up one other top contending team a year), and the talent level at USC destroys everyone else. There's a handful of teams in all of college football that should even be able to give them a game, and it's not like he has to play them all every year. USC should win the conference every year, which because of the Rose Bowl gives them an automatic BCS game (not to mention a good shot at winning due to the inconsistency of the Big 10). I will give him credit for doing very well in big, out of conference match-ups (including BCS games). So yes, he's good. But given the talent and depth on that team, he should absolutely dominate, and he just doesn't always do it.

Yeah, as far as football goes, there's really no history, tradition or talent in Texas.

I agree that recruiting is a big deal, and Carroll is the best at it. But with the amount of talent he has at the school, he should have that school in the title game every other year. The fact that they lose a game they should win just about every year knocks him down a big notch to me. It's tought to pick the best coach, given the difference in program size and talent available. Coaches I like: I'd agree that Kelly is making a name for himself. I like what Gill's doing, but he'll need to be with a better team to really judge him against the big boys. I'm very interested to see if Paul Johnson can make his system work at GT. I despise the guy, but Saban has to be one of the best. You have to like what Chris Peterson does out in Boise.

So in other words, this is your fault.

Don't knock it. That guy that figured out the "Loss-man" thing a couple years ago was dead on. -
Some of you think the Bills are a mess?
Acantha replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
AP artice on SI: Full Article. Even gives mention to the Bills fight. BTW, anyone else notice that when you copy something from CNNSI, it now automatically adds a link to the story when you paste it? -
Unusual Explanations for the Obesity Epidemic

It's not worth arguing about. I have a lot of experience with it, and have my opinion. You apparently have the same. -
Unusual Explanations for the Obesity Epidemic
Acantha replied to ExiledInIllinois's topic in Off the Wall Archives
As I said, there's a difference between Alchoholism and drunks. Just because you drank a lot doesn't mean you were an achoholic. But really, it doesn't have much to do with the point I was going for. -

I agree, but I don't consider no will power a disease like I would alchoholism. Kind of the difference between being an alchoholic and being a drunk. Yes, for some it can be harder and they may not have the will power to work out and eat great. But in the end, that's their own fault. Either you do something about it, or you live fat. And if that's good with them, it's good with me too, but don't get pissed when you have to pay higher health care costs or buy two seats on a plane. -
Unusual Explanations for the Obesity Epidemic

I think you're being sarcastic, but I actually do fall into this category. In order to stay at what I consider my preferable weight (180...I'm 5'11"), I have to eat what I consider to be "perfect" and do tough workouts at least 5 days a week. For me, eating perfect is counting calories (with the workouts I do, I use a 2200 cal a day diet), with the right breakdown of Protein/Carb/Fats. Only allowing myself a "cheat" once a week. I always stick to my workouts, but it's rare that I'm motivated enough to eat "perfect", so I'm generally 10-15lbs over weight. I'm currently at about 190. If it wasn't for the fact that I enjoyed working out, I'd probably gain much more weight, and in fact during times that I got out of cycle, I've been as high as 210, which I certianly consider OBESE. As it is, I usually get fed up with my weight at about 195, get on perfect eating schedule and drop my weight back down to at least 185. Even when I'm not eating perfect, I eat better than almost everyone I know, and I certainly work out more/harder, yet I'm the one who gains weight. The fact is, DNA DOES play a part in how much fat you have. AND, there are things you can do about it. People that just say "I'm fat cause I have bad DNA, and that's that" are using it as an excuse because they don't want to work hard. Thing are supposed to be easy now-a-days, and when the magic pill doesn't work, or they work out for two weeks and haven't lost 10 lbs, they give up. -
Yep, and plays in the car.

I can't remember the details, but I remember reading something about that. Supposedly he had a contract ready to sign, but the day he was supposed to make it official ESPN made a better offer and he signed with them. (again, I can't remember very well, so this may be wrong)

Question about tattoos in the workplace.
Acantha replied to Hazed and Amuzed's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Speaking for me, no I didn't say that. I said nobody that I know that has one. I should probably change that to say none of my friends, or people that I know well. I'm sure there are people that do that, but from my experience it's not even close to the majority, as has been argued. -

Aaron Maybin contract negotiations
Acantha replied to fairfaxbill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
According to the numbers I've seen, the contract would be 5 years, 24.25 million, 15.05 guaranteed. IMO, that's the "fault" line. Whoever is asking for more or less than that is responsible for Maybin not being in camp. -
Oahu: If you're going to hit Pearl Harbor (really the most interesting thing on Oahu), as someone said before, be there early! Can't stress it enough. I'm pretty sure it opens at 730, you'll want to BE THERE at 7. You'll probably be one of the first few in line, but the buses start showing up about 710 - 715 and after that, you're just wasting your day. Not sure where you're staying, but you may need to leave earlier than you think. Traffic on the island is horrible, and trying to get around the Hickam/Pearl Harbor area at that time of day can be rough. I'd recommend doing this your first morning. Everyone that's ever come to stay with has woken up at like 5am due to the time difference. It's happened enough that I now plan on Pearl Harbor the first morning, and after that you can sleep in every day. Anyway, other than Pearl: One of my favorite things to do is just make a drive around the eastern half of the island and make stops along the way. Start by getting on the H-1 east and drive till it ends (keep going). After about 10 minutes you'll go through a small town and then up a steep hill. In this area you can stop at Haunama Bay, the Makapuu lighthouse, and the blowhole. When you're done, keep heading in the same direction and enjoy the ride and views (beautiful over there, and since most people don't go out there, it's the reason they think Oahu is nothing but touristy). As you drive around the the windward side you'll come into Kaneohe and meet up with Kamehameha Hwy, which will take you around the rest of the drive. Do yourself a favor and stop at Tropical Farms for the tour. Probably the only actual secret left on Oahu, it's great! The Byodo Temple is nearby, nice quick stop. Keep driving up the coast and you'll pass The Polynesian Cultural Center on your left (this is very cool, but it's expensive and really a full day event). Just past that you'll see a large parking area/park on your right. Beautiful beach area here and 9 times out of 10, there won't be anyone around. Unfortunately that 10th time, some tourist company decides to bring a bus in. But it's rare, and even if you don't want to spend a lot of time there, it's worth it just to see the view. Keep going and you'll be driving around the northernmost tip of the island. You'll see some old beat up trucks on the side of the road selling shrimp (probably quite crowded). If you like shrimp and are hungry, stop and get some. It's worth it. The most famous is Giovanni's shrimp truck (white truck covered with grafitti. After that is another nice, scenic drive, but it starts to get busier now. You'll be coming to Waiamea Bay, which is the big surfing spot. Beautiful beaches and big surf, but crowded. There's a park on the left where you can pay a few bucks and walk a paved road to Waiamea Falls. Nothing spectacular (you'll see much better falls on Kuai, my favorite island), but nice. After that you come around to Turtle Bay and then Haleiwa. Haleiwa is promoted as an old surfer town, but really it's just a tourist trap with kind of a cool look to it. But, it is a good place to stop for dinner, and especially Shave Ice. Get some Shave Ice or Ice Cream at the General Store, best of both on the island. The books tell you Matsumoto's (and that's where the line will be), but trust me, the General Store is GOOD. Keep driving and you'll come to the Dole Plantation. Good for a stop, but all in all, pretty boring unless you're interested in farming? Anyway, nice to stop and get a few pictures and take the tour. That wraps it up. Stay on Kamahameha until you get to the H-2, take that to the H-1, and you're back. Depending on how much you stop, this could be a full day. I've done it with people who were more interested in just seeing the views than anything else, and it takes a few hours. Anyway, sorry for the long tutorial! If you have any questions, let me know.
