NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. — John Daly gripped it and ripped it, but even The Lion couldn't tame mighty Niagara Falls.
The 39-year-old PGA Tour veteran, known as one of the longest drivers in golf, failed to clear the Horseshoe Falls in 20 attempts Wednesday night.
Thousands of people who gathered at Table Rock and those watching on television saw ball after ball disappear into the mist of the Horseshoe Falls.
"Once it got into the mist, you couldn't see it. I think it just hit that mist and dropped," Daly said afterward. "I hit some really good balls. There were about eight of them that I just pounded on that I couldn't have hit any better."
