Bills Mock Day 1 V2.0
smokinandjokin replied to BillsFanForever19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
At least he cites an article. Most of the time, if I'm forced to decide between an AP/ESPN article and a Thorolf post on a message board, I will usually tend to believe the article. BTW, doesn't every player in the NFL play to get PAID? From what you're saying, it sounds like he had a problem with the GM, not the coach (both of whom were Sherman in Green Bay.) I also wasn't aware you were able to distinguish between 'real' injuries, and those that are 'milked.' -

You left out his full quote: "We're in Canada, so I'll get to see a replay of my goal on TV when I'm at the strip club."

Mine didn't turn out too bad, considering what I was doing the night before. -

Not sure what to make of '06 Bart, but I'll take a crack at it... 1) LSU- Amazing what a big bowl victory can do to boost a team through winter conditioning, spring practice, and into next fall. 2) Notre Dame- They have everything you could ask on offense; just need some DB's who won't get torched. 3) Ohio State- Offense will be solid, but I'd like them a lot better if Holmes stayed for his senior year. Ginn has shown flashes but not consistency. Defense will be a huge ?. 4) Southern Cal- They have lost the greatest group of players in school history. Everyone knew Leinart, Bush, and White were gone, but losing juniors OT Winston Justice and S Darnell Bing will hurt. They will have Herschel Dennis at RB (he started as a frosh before Bush and White arrived, and sat out a year due to injury, so he's a senior now) and QB's Booty and Sanchez (#1 recruit in country from two years ago.) I have to assume Carrol will have some better athletes on the defensive side of the ball. 5) Florida- Last chance for Leak to live up to the high expectations that followed him to UF. He showed an ability to execute Meyer's offense toward the end of the year, and Meyer showed the ability to be flexible and alter plays that didn't suit Leak's talents. Even in the SEC, it will be rare when they are not more athletic team than their opponent. 6) West Virginia- Impressive young team who beat Georgia in Atlanta in the Sugar Bowl. I must admit, I had only seen them get romped at home by VT before the Sugar Bowl, and I thought they would be outclassed against UGA. 7) Michigan- Sorry Penn State...I think Mike Hart is healthier this year, and even if he's not, Grady proved he can carry the load. Henne should also be better with another year under his belt. The questions will be whether or not the defense can get big stops, and if Lloyd Carr can actually win a game that matters. 8/9/10) Penn St, Oklahoma, and Miami in whatever order you want.... 113) University of Buffalo- Under new coach Turner Gill, the administration and the community would love to see a two-win season.

The goal he scored with his ass on the ice was absolutely unreal. EDIT: PLEASE NOTE: The shot came from his hockey stick, not from his ass!

Shame on you if your missing your Sabres!!
smokinandjokin replied to NavyBillsFan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Who cares? Everyone in Buffalo loves this team, and is getting behind them. Do I care if John Buccigross and Barry Melrose are talking about them? Do I care what hockey fans in Chicago and Calgary think of the Sabres? HELL NO! We all know they have a good team...And trust me, every coach and every player in the NHL knows they have a good team. I like where they are, and wouldn't mind seeing them enter the playoffs as the #4 or 5 seed. The top seeds have the hype, but they also have all the pressure. With the way Buffalo plays on the road, they won't be scared of not having home-ice against any team in the playoffs. By the way, entering tonight's games, Carolina was the best team in the NHL. I haven't heard chit about them either, so don't worry about the Sabres. Watching this Sabres team night in and night out, they really grow on you and you appreciate how truly underrated they are. But for a casual, out-of-town hockey fan, in this Sportscenter highlight era, there truthfully is not much that would catch your eye if you only watch them once or twice. Just a bunch of better-than-average-but-not-incredible players outworking the other team, and winning with timely goal scoring and excellent goaltending. (BTW, the 'not incredible' comment does NOT include Miller- he is unbelievable.) -
He is brutal when it comes to this. His reputation is going to get blasted if he keeps losing like this in the playoffs. No disrespect to the Steeler defense- they had a lot to do with it- but Manning looks like a completely different QB against an aggressive defense in the playoffs. I used to think it was just the "Belichick Shakes," but Pittsburgh exposed him in the exact same way the Patriots have. Hit him early, rush him often, and he turns into a jittery, happy-footed, inaccurate schoolgirl.

Spikes: Mularkey did "a lot of things
smokinandjokin replied to Coach Tuesday's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
TKO must have been pumped watching the division champ Bengals in their playoff game...Good thing he left those bums so that he could play for a winner! -
Why is it widely considered that New Orleans underachieved? They have Aaron Brooks (cannon arm, shoddy decisions), Deuce McAllister (Mr. IR himself) and Joe Horn (one of the NFL's better wideouts.) I'm not sure there's much else going on there. Haslett was 45-51 in six seasons with the team (19-29 @ home, 26-22 on the road), but 42-38 when you take out the 3-13 season they had this year in an impossible situation after the hurricane. He led the 2000 team to the only playoff victory in franchise history. Playing in a division where in the past 4 years, Tampa has won a Super Bowl, Carolina went to the Super Bowl, and the Falcons made it to the NFC title game, I don't understand how we call the Saints underachieving. Does anybody really think they have good players???

Eric Mangini rumored to be top HC candidate...
smokinandjokin replied to haff20's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Agreed. I know they've had injuries, but the Pats D hasn't been anything to write home about this year. Shutting down the young Jags in a night game at the house of the defending champs in not hard to do. Especially with Belichick looking over your shoulder like a dad. Haven't we learned our lesson with hiring the hot coordinator who is the "next big thing?" -
WHO DO PEOPLE WANT AS "OUR" HEAD COACH
smokinandjokin replied to Gardinier's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I say Hassell or Faslett. -
He took a huge insurance policy out on himself which would've paid him very handsomely. The payouts were based on a percentage of the contracts signed by the top 5 picks in last April's draft. Obviously he would not have made as much money with the insurance as he could've with NFL/endorsement deals, but he would have been quite comfortable, and set for life. The policy covered career-ending injury, and also would've paid out on a smaller scale for an injury that allowed him to still play, but perhaps dropped his draft stock to say, the 3rd round in '06, istead of Top-5 where he would've been chosen in April '05.

I knew the difference when I typed it. But yes, I am an idiot, so it works out. Don't you think this guy is relatively pleased with the outcome of all this? The hubbub is what every author wants, good or bad. There's a thread about this book, not because Oprah liked it, but because of the media attention for it's inaccuracies. I originally responded because Stojan said he's backtracking, and I don't think so...I think he's eating this up. BTW, I should have used "Titanic" as my reference. The Smoking Gun reported that there was no topless girl wearing a ruby. That would've worked better!
-
And how the heck do you know this? Everytime they've used him in passing situations I've been impressed, and often wondered why they didn't use him more. He caught 28 passes this year for 178 yds, while our "package" 3rd down back, Shaud Williams, caught 17 for 118. I think Willis could've done more if he actually played on 3rd down.
-
I KNOW that... But how many people do you know who are obsessed with Oprah's book club??? Listen, I know Oprah endorses a book, and it takes off. Obviously, this book would have been obscure if she didn't recommend it. What I'm saying is, don't you think this media attention brings 100x more publicity than a stamp from the Oprah Book Club? Granted, there wouldn't be such a hubbub if this book wasn't a best seller, and it's only a best seller because of the OBC. But to say this guy is worried about his credibility and is backtracking??? No way! Many millions of people who don't give a rat's ass about Oprah or her books (like me) and who would never, ever have heard of this book, now know about this author and this story. The point I'm making is that so many more people have become aware of this book because of the news coverage that now surrounds it...not because Oprah told a bunch of housewives one afternoon that she liked it. He can't be too upset about that. And people are upset that they assumed they were reading a non-fiction, unembellished story by a cracked-out, drugged-up, alcoholic? That's B.S. Nobody should get their money back. If you enjoyed the book, then it was money well spent. If you didn't enjoy it...Tough break...I've read lots of books I wasn't thrilled with and I wasn't able to get a refund. By the way, I want my money back from 10 years ago when I went to see Independence Day. The Smoking Gun just reported that aliens never did attack Earth, and it's not a true story.
-
Did you know about this book because of Oprah, or because of these allegations?
-
I'm not sure the guy is backpeddling. I know Oprah endorsed the book, but in reality, how many people really give a sh*t about books Oprah endorses, and who truthfully heard a thing about this book before now? I sure didn't. I think this will only generate more interest...I heard about this in four different places today, from Shredd & Regan in the morning to seeing the author on Larry King tonight. I'm sure he will make more money from this controversy than from any stamp that Oprah puts on the cover.

I have said it here before, but I am a huge fan of the college rule where the clock stops on 1st downs to move the chains. If the game is close, and the losing team has the ball at their own 20, it is realistic that they can go down the field with 1:00 left and no timeouts, as long as they are going 10-yards at a time. Then run up and spike the ball as soon as the ref whistles. It opens up the middle of the field for the offense and doesn't let the defense play the 44-deep prevent. Plus, it's nailbiting if your team is winning, and INTENSE if your team is losing. The rule has taken games that used to be in the bag and created some wild finishes.

predictions this weekend?
smokinandjokin replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'll go Colts over Pittsburgh, high scoring for both, but Colts cover (-9). 38-24 Colts. Denver at home in the night game. Pats are the trendy pick, and they have been playing well...but in another fairly high scoring game, I'll say Denver 27-23. You should never lose a home playoff game that starts at 8:30pm. Seattle over 'Skins. That West Coast trip is not a cakewalk. 31-13 Shehawks. I heard on Mike & Mike this morning that the average age on the Bears defense is 25. Urlacher and Mike Brown, both just 27, are the only holdovers from the 2001 team that went 13-3. That defense has a chance to be good for a long time. I say the defense carries them and Rex does just enough...17-10 Bears. (The over/under is 30.5!!! I guess with my predicted score, I'm going under!) -
I gotta go with the Wheeling Nailers.
