Wrong. I think you meant to say it's been 20 years, not 25.

I was definitely sweating that final play. That would have been a giant kick in the balls. I had Steelers -5.

Nice. Four more games till the break- home & home vs. Montreal, home vs. Florida, and at Carolina. Won't be easy, but Sabres would be at nine in a row if they managed to win them all. Miller Time

I appreciate your point, but there HAS to be a call on the field. That's what the refs are paid to do. What if they all shrug their shoulders and look at each other, and then replay doesn't have the correct camera angle, the results are inconclusive, etc. It has all happened before with replay. You can't just say, "We're not sure," you MUST make a call on the field. Your theory is a good one regarding no burden of proof, but it would be a real chitshow if no call was made on the field and the replay couldn't decide it. You can't just pretend the play didn't happen.

I think clearly there was some doubt. It was stated earlier, that replay was no help at all. If no TD was the call, it stands. Since TD was called on the field, there didn't seem to be enough to overturn it. Not to get into a pissing contest here, but I was also watching on a flat screen in HD, and while personally I thought he didn't get in, I couldn't say I saw for sure that he didn't.

Horrible call!!! I watched it 17 times in super super super slow motion, and once I digitally increased the size of the picture and digitally removed parts of Roethlisberger and the defender so I could see the ball, it was clearly obvious that he was 0.2336 inches short of the chalk. I don't understand how a ref could blow that call on a high speed collision at the goalline while determining forward progress, where the ball is, and whether or not the runner is down, all in front of 500 million people. Idiot!!! [/sarcasm]

Was Holmgrens absence from the post game

Did anybody see that Sports Illustrated issue a few months ago, where they featured the work of one of their photojournalists who passed away? He had a great shot of the coin flip at Super Bowl I, and there were two Chiefs, two Packers, and the referee standing there. Then right next to that pic, they put a photo this guy took of the coin flip at last year's Super Bowl. There were six Patriots, six Eagles, all of the refs, honorary guests, the ceremonial coin flipper, NFL reps, TV execs, and a throng of about 150 reporters and camera men. The contrast was striking. I'm sure Holmgren and Cowher caught up at some point after the game. -
Didn't everyone know the Steelers were going to win??? I took the Steelers and the under for a boatload of cash, and I assure you I was not in on the conspiracy.

You don't say! I don't think anyone's ever considered that before. Are you also suggesting that you didn't send out your 'Happy Martin Luther King Day' cards this year??? -
Gillette pays Ben to shave with their new Fusion razor You knew this was coming. Also, if you read the article, notice the name of the memoribilia company Ben signed a deal with: 'Mounted Memories.' I have a few mounted memories of my trip to the Crazy Horse in Vegas.

Looks like the chatter all week with Joey Porter left Stevens with something in the back of his mind. He dropped passes all over the field in crucial junctures of the game, including a perfect strike from Hasselbeck which would've set Seattle up on around the 5-yd line. I bet even his mom thinks he had a bad game. At least he has a Super Bowl TD catch, they can't take that away. He was getting open pretty consistently, even though he had the dropsies. A big, athletic pass-catching TE is such a weapon in the NFL, and I think it could be the way to beat Pittsburgh. Dallas Clark for Indy had a decent game, including a 50-yd catch-and-run TD, but Manning only went to him three other times. I think against Pittsburgh's zone blitz, you need a TE who can be a consistent target when a LB or safety is covering him. Furthermore, an athletic TE can create mismatches against a zone blitz when a D-lineman is forced to drop into coverage. Hopefully Everett can develop into a weapon for the Bills. As for Shaun Alexander, he compiled a quiet 95 yards on 20 carries. A pretty respectable night, but his M.O. is getting into the endzone, and he was unable to do so. I thought he was slightly underused. When Seattle was down by two scores, I understand the desire to throw the ball a bit more. But when they caught a break on Ben's horrible INT, and they pulled within 14-10, I thought they should've hammered Alexander. He was consistently gaining 3, 4, 5 yards. That's all I got.

More Deserving of the 1st-Ballot HOF
smokinandjokin replied to Rico's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't want this to sound like blasphemy, but in my humble opinion, if Jim Kelly was a first-ballot HOFer as a QB, then Thurman Thomas should have been first-ballot as a RB. It is hogwash when the voting media makes up their own rules, and says things like, "If you're a first-ballot HOFer, then you should define your position, like Jim Brown and Walter Payton." I think that's what hurt Thurman, because he was unlike any RB in the league. He could run, but he was an extreme weapon in the passing game also. When Marshall Faulk was putting up HUGE numbers with the Rams in 1998-2001, they consistently flashed stats where Faulk was chasing Thurman's records, or Faulk had just passed Thurman for a record. It made me appreciate just how good Thurman was. You could make the case that Thurmal was more important to the success of that early-90's offense than Jimbo. That's not dissing Kelly, that's just saying what a stud TT was. -

Solid work. And I love that some dude named 'Garth' wrote it!!! -
I'm not really one for the squares, I'm more of a bet-the-spread gambler. But for the Super Bowl, I usually buy a few squares at various bars, etc. I usually don't go much bigger than the $20 per square. However, I was talking to a family friend last night who is a pilot for American Airlines. He said the pilots have a grid going around that is $10,000 per square, and there is no 1st qtr/halftime/3rd qtr/touching squares payouts. It is one winner, final score only. The winner clears $1,000,000. I couldn't even imagine. How do you hide that money if you win???

What's the funniest/humiliating thing
smokinandjokin replied to CosmicBills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I've done a lot of embarrassing/funny things, but most of them have the convienent disclaimer of drunkeness. However, one of the most embarrasing sober moments occurred on the golf course, and it was my fault. I was on the tee box late in the round, about the 16th hole, and I had been hitting the ball pretty well. There was a pond about 30 yards in front of the tee box and a little to the left, but it was not in play at all. I say "If anyone hits the ball into the pond, they play this hole bare-assed." Our foursome was me, two friends, and one of the friend's father. My friend steps up and hits a solid drive, and then I step up and jerk a groundball to the shortstop, three skips and right in the pond. Of course, these guys are all dying laughing and calling me out on my bet. I owned up to my own stupidity for even suggesting it, and threw my pants and boxers in my bag. There we were walking up the fairway, and I had a golf shirt on, shoes and socks, and that's it. The funny part was, the shirt was hanging over my "crucial" areas, but when I would swing, I was fully exposed. To make matters worse, my girlfriend's father just happened to be playing behind us throughout the round. Luckily he was a pretty good guy, and as he was coming up the 15th fairway, he saw me walking with no pants on, and he just started laughing and said "Hit it in the pond, huh?" -

In which case we should all feel free to speculate. I say this cheerleader was caught engaging in sexual activity with another cheerleader in a bathroom stall, and that is why she was booted. Anyone else? -
I think it's a pretty ambiguous injury and rarely are two the same. It is just given the title of 'sports hernia', but the actual injury can vary greatly. You could tell something was not right with McNabb, while Brady was able to play through the season with nobody really noticing a difference. I'm sure McNabb's was to a much more serious degree. BTW, are these f'ing things contagious??? Did anyone ever hear of a sports hernia before this year? Now we have McNabb, Briere, Dumont, etc. Crazy.

Coin Toss: First active player in NFL history
smokinandjokin replied to Lurker's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think it's a good choice. The coin flip is not all that different from the dump passes and screens that Brady has been throwing his whole career. And you know if he screws up and accidentally 'fumbles' the coin, the refs will give him another shot at it!
