What are the personal top Places...
smokinandjokin replied to BoondckCL's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Man oh man, let me think: My fav's: The Ralph L.A. Coliseum (a little worn down, but like Bart@ND, I'm biased) Old Tiger Stadium Rose Bowl- USC vs UCLA Oak Hill CC '95 Ryder Cup Madison Square Garden Santa Anita and Del Mar Race Courses- breathtaking Saratoga Race Course- possibly my favorite place in the world Belmont- 2004 Belmont Stakes- Smarty Jones- largest crowd to watch a sporting event in New York State history- 120,000+ crazy. PNC Park- Saw Detroit play there this summer. Park was MUCH more than I expected. Wrigley- but twas a night game Yankee Stadium Dodger Stadium Pauley Pavilion Goodison Park- Liverpool, England. Home of Everton FC. I have family in Liverpool, big time Everton fans, that schit is crazy! New Orleans Superdome for 2003 Final Four- Wasn't great for watching hoops, but looking back with what we know now, I'm glad I was there. Must see's: Fenway Camden Wrigley day game Cameron Indoor Stadium LSU football Churchill Downs for the Derby Nou Camp and Bernabeu- soccer stadiums in Spain Pebble Beach and Augusta Red Rocks for a concert Probably many others I must see but can't think of at the moment...Cool topic! -
Great topic..... Favorite horse of all time? A filly named Storm Flag Flying. Unbelievable horse. I watched her win the Breeders Cup Juvenile Filly in person in 2002, at Arlington in Illinois. She stalked the lead, took command at the head of the stretch, lost the lead in mid-stretch and looked defeated, and then thundered back to win by a nose. I also watched her in person defeat a heavily favored Azeri in the Personal Ensign at Saratoga in summer of '04. Incredible heart. She is now retired and has just popped out her first young one. Current favorite- Lava Man. I've been following him for a few years, he was bought as a claimer for $50k several years ago. He has since dominated just about all of his races, and as a 5-year old, will probably go off as the favorite in next month's Breeders Cup Classic. Classy horse. Favorite name- Hoof Hearted. When the track announcer said it, it sounded like "Who Farted takes the lead!" Best horse I ever saw in person- Point Given. An absolute monster.

I think the sack numbers speak for themselves, and you can look at that stat many ways. Some find it meaningless because it's not indicative of your complete impact on the game. Some say it's the best measurement of a guy who's paid to rush the QB. Bottom line, the numbers show he gets to the QB as often, or more often, than many DE's in the league. My real question is, does he completely sell himself out just to get the sack? Could he do more, play more containment on running downs, have more of an impact in other areas besides sacks? Obviously, probably nobody here knows what Schobel is coached to do, or what the defensive system asks of him. Perhaps the coaches are telling him to rush upfield every down. However, he seems to have very little impact on the game lately other than the occasional sack. Is that comparable to other DE's? I dunno. I NEVER question Schobel's desire, effort, or intensity. I do question his constant speed rush to the outside, where a tackle or RB can bump him upfield and he finds himself completely out of the play. Thoughts?

Yankees Cory Lidle owned plane that crashed
smokinandjokin replied to RVJ's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Pretend it's not a Yankees pitcher for one second and realize that a handful of people are dead and a building is on fire. No matter who was flying the plane, it would still be a tragedy. Trust me, I'm not trying to be 'dad' here and make people ashamed of themselves. I believe in healing-through-humor as much as anyone. But there are some cheap shots in this thread that are highly insensitive. I give the benefit of the doubt that it is just message board spew, and most people actually act human in their 'real' lives. Message board tards coming out of the woodwork are a dime a dozen. Be better than that. -

I am as low-brow as the next guy, and I'm not personally offended by any of the posts in this thread, but there is a classier way to express yourselves. -

Cool Pooj thanks for the heads up. I've heard you pump their tires a few times, but I haven't given them a listen. I'm a little under the weather so I plan on overdosing myself with NyQuil around the 8th inning of the Tigers game, but I'll definitely set the TIVO. -
What is the opinion of Aaron Schobel around here? I know he has had some big games for the Bills where he has constantly been in the opposing QB's face. However, I have noticed that in many games (and the Chicago game in particular) Schobel tries his speed rush to the outside, and is bumped upfield by the tackle, leaving him out of the play when the QB steps up or hands off. After 5 games this year, he has 9 tackles (4 solo and 5 Zach Taylors), while his DE counterparts Denney and Kelsay both have twice as many. And two of Schobel's four solo tackles have been sacks. My question is this: When we look back at the end of the year, and Schobel has 13 sacks, many people are going to say he had a decent year. However, is he just selling himself out to get sacks with his outside speed rush, that more often than not leaves him completely out of the play? Or is he doing many things we casual fans do not notice, and earning his sacks along the way? Is he the pass-rush asset his stats suggest he is, or is he a run defense liability?

"This could be a tough one for the Bills..."
smokinandjokin replied to smokinandjokin's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I probably am cherry-picking. However, it seems that anytime this team has had a chance to make a statement or put themselves on the NFL map, they have failed miserably in this department. And I don't mean just losing. I mean losing to the point of embarrassing themselves, and giving a 'run-for-the-bus' effort. I like your use of a figure (point spread) to test this theory. I just went back and looked at the schedules, and recalled games where I said on Wednesday, "Boy, it will be tough this week...They will really have to play well, but I think they can do it." In the majority of those games, it's not like it was a 6-point spread and the Bills are losing 27-20. They are getting absolutely massacred. As for looking back, I assume you are referring to the Dolphins game as a game we recently won on the road as a TD underdog. The numbers don't lie, but let's be real here. That Dolphins team is horrendous. Vegas just didn't know it yet after one game. And I mentioned the Cincy game as one of the times they did show up. But again, they were playing loose and had nothing to win or lose. Something tells me if they were 9-5 going into that Cincy game last year, and the playoffs were riding on a win, Cincy would've covered the two TD spread, and then some. (Obviously we'll never know...It just feels that way.) As for the Tampa game, no one was saying that would be tough??? JP's first road start, against THAT defense? The fact that the Bills were favored was similar to the Phins game this year- week 2 Vegas line is meaningless. Perhaps I shouldn't expect the Bills to win these tough, statement games. I should lump them in where they have been the last five years- with Detroit, Houston, Arizona, and Tennessee. Before this year, according to your stats, they were 2-11 in these games straight up. I just keep waiting for them to be better than also-rans, and they haven't produced yet. At least if they were on the verge, it would be promising. But the blowouts are getting old. -
I know there are a few others out there like myself who thought we had a chance to steal a win on Sunday in Chicago. We should've known better. It's happened so many times over the past three, four, five years where the Bills have gone into a game against a good team, and in the build up, we've said, "Well, this is definitely going to be a tough one...But if they can do X, and limit Y, they have a shot..." In all of those games (typically on the road against playoff-caliber teams) not only have the Bills not stolen a win, they've practically given the game away, and, to make matters worse, seemingly didn't even get off the bus. The games that immediately come to mind as those where we said, "Wow, this will be a tough game, but the Bills have a chance..." and then they laid an egg- This year Buried @ Chicago, 40-7 2005 Lost @ Tampa, 19-3 Score does not indicate the level of domination Lost @ San Diego, 48-10 Score DOES indicate the level of domination 2004 Lost @ Baltimore, 20-6 Didn't show up Lost @ New England, 29-6 on national TV. Never in the game. 2003 Lost @ Miami, 17-7 on national TV. Points and yards in garbage time covered up total domination by Phins defense. Lost @ KC, 38-5 on national TV. Bills blew a 2-0 lead in this one. 2002 Lost @ home to New England, 38-7. Crushing defeat. Bills' very real playoff chances took a major setback. So, whenever I see one of those "This one will be tough" games on the schedule, should I just chalk it up as a loss right now? To be fair, the games they've won include '02 @ Vikings, '04 @ Seattle, and '04 & '05 @ Cincy. But the vast majority of the time, not only have they lost, they've done so in spectacular fashion. I wasn't necessarily looking for a win in Chicago, I was just looking for a competitive game. Apparently, that is still too much to ask of these Bills. Just when they do enough to convince you they have a chance, just when you want to believe, they get tossed around by a superior team, further entrenching themselves as a 2nd-tier team for yet another year. FRUSTRATING!

I like the fact that they are winning, but also allowing the opponent to secure a point as well. That's very nice of Lindy. They don't want to run away with things in September...You know, keep it interesting for at least a little while... -

Okay....so, I saw Buster get worked last night. NC State ran all over them. I'm not being a prick, I do like Buster as a player and would love him on the Bills. I just took exception to you calling Posluzny overrated and soft, and I'm no PSU fan. If he's overrated, then Hawk is overrated too. I agree, stats don't make up the whole story, but they matter. It's hard to say Posluzny got worked in the Orange Bowl last year when you consider FSU's offensive output that I included earlier in this thread. An offense doesn't gain 26 yards on 26 rushes when they are 'working' the other team's MLB. NC State's RB's, on the other hand, rushed for 163 on 31 carries. Buster had 3 solo tackles and 7 Zach Taylors (some statisticians call them 'assists', but not me.) Sounds like Buster was soft....

There, I think we got all of the canned responses out for the Stern-haters who like to feel high and mighty by coming into a "Howard Stern" thread and trashing his show. I did you a favor, now stay away so we can discuss the wheel of farts on our own dumbed-down level without you intellectuals getting in the way... -

I saw your IM with Foley on CNN. Must've been some expensive counseling, but I'm glad you can look back and joke about it... -
The game was 16-16 at the end of regulation (Posluzny was injured late in the 4th.) FSU had 26 rushing yards on 26 attempts. Their two TD's were an 87-yard punt return and a 57-yard reception. FSU was 3-17 on 3rd down and punted nine times. Posluzny was coincidentally injured on the drive and off the field when FSU managed to move the ball enough to kick the tying FG. But he got worked???

Spikes, as a team leader, standing up for Vincent (another vet and team leader) was blown way out of proportion by the mouth breathers on this board. It was a one-day thing where Spikes said what was on his mind (he's one of the few on the team who's entitled to do so) and we haven't heard a peep about it since. But apparently Takeo needs to "keep his mouth shut." It was reported that Vincent's hammy was more severe than TKO's, and TKO has missed four weeks, so the decision to IR Vincent looks to be the right move in the end. Spikes was worried about two rookie safeties starting. What's wrong with that? I remember a reporter asking Faneca, a vet and team leader of the Steelers, if he was excited about Big Ben starting when Maddox got hurt a few years ago. There was a big hubbub because Faneca told the truth and said, "No, I'm not excited about a rookie QB taking over the offense. Who would be?" Crowell has played well. Wait until he gets to play next to a healthy Spikes. He will look that much better. IMO, Spikes just wants to win, and if he says something that comes off wrong, at least he's passionate about what he's saying. Also, it's the NFL. Don't be "ticked off" about injuries. Nobody cares about the hamsting injury you played through during your sophomore year of high school on JV fooball.
