Worst infomercial ever!
smokinandjokin replied to BF in Indiana's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Speaking of spray on devices, I saw one for spray-on mud for your 4x4. So for some college kid who's dad bought him an SUV, he can spray on some mud and look like he was offroading. Absolutely rettata. Worst. Idea. Ever. -
Is there a "pat my own back" emoticon?

Yup, that's the one. That's hilarious.....If we can't laugh at tragedy, it means the Arubans (and their teenage Dutch seducers) have won.

UB Football...it's official
smokinandjokin replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't think any coach will have sustained success at UB. The program is a joke, the school's campus bland at best, but ugly is an accurate word, and the weather here sucks. It's easy to say "Pick up the scraps left behind down in Florida and Texas," but how do you get them to come here? There are probably 200 schools between here and there that these kids would rather attend. Omar Jacobs is the star QB for Bowling Green. He was mentioned as a possible dark horse Heisman candidate before this season started. He is from DelRay Beach, FL, and was lightly recruited. He narrowed his college choices to UB and Bowling Green. UB brought him up here in December 2002, and the sky dumped 7 feet of snow on Buffalo. Surprise surprise...This kid will be playing QB for Bowling Green against UB this Saturday. I play hoops every Tuesday night in Alumni Arena. Just walking around the halls in there, the facilities are second-rate. I'm not sure they will ever be able to recruit. -
This guy should be banned from football.

He shouldn't be allowed to drink beer, get ass, or attend any parties after dusk. That is a steep fine for a college student. -
The Further Erosion Of Hyper-Sensitive PC America

I'm sure God was holding his breath on the outcome of this high school football game, or any game for that matter. It's like when Ron Artest thanks God in a postgame interview for his 20 points and 11 rebounds. The reporter should ask, "Ron, when you refer to God, do you mean Phil Knight at Nike?" -

Golisano enrolls in GOP
smokinandjokin replied to RuntheDamnBall's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I know, I'm not saying he specifically is the answer, but somebody similar with 1) a household name, 2) marketability, 3) proven goal scorer, 4)relatively inexpensive. Kariya seemed to meet those criteria so I used him as an example. I agree, he has been down over the past two years (three if you count the lockout) but the league is now built for quickness. A smallish player like him did not stand a chance to remain healthy (much less be a consistent difference maker) over the course of 82 games + playoffs in the old NHL. He is the type of player who should excel in with the new rules. And dont get me wrong, I like the team they have RIGHT NOW. They prepared well for the rule changes, and they are well positioned to make a run at the free agents next year (which Darcy said they will do), when many of this year's freespending teams will be over the cap. The point I was making was that $28 million vs. $32.5 million shouldn't make Golisano cringe, when he spends $100 million to lose three elections. Who could have predicted in 2002 that DR would be a better GM than TD? -
On the subjects of the continuing QB circus
smokinandjokin replied to Typical TBD Guy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I appreciate the info, but I am hesitant to make the "Woe is us" statement. If I wasn't so lazy, I would look at other team's injuries. I know the Pats have been hit hard. Additionally, the Jets will be starting a 41-year old deli owner this weekend because they lost both their #1 and #2. I guess my point is, before we determine that we are sunk, we have to remember that this is the NFL, and you will not make it through a season without losing at least one impact player. And I think 99% of the players in the league are playing with a nagging injury. -
Golisano enrolls in GOP
smokinandjokin replied to RuntheDamnBall's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I agree Campy, but imagine this same team with one Big Time goal scorer. Somebody like Kariya, a proven scorer who could be very dangerous with the new rules, signed for $4.5 mil a season. I whole-heartedly agree, rolling four lines is the way to go, but 40-goal scorers will have their share of game-winners in that bunch (okay, maybe not Satan.) I would love to see this current team with one Go-To Guy, and I don't think Golisano would have had to break the bank to do it. But we'll see. They keep saying they have a plan, and they will be well-positioned for next year's free agents, so we'll have to trust them for now. I like the way the team is playing and I like the results. Even in the loss, I liked the way they played. -
Golisano enrolls in GOP
smokinandjokin replied to RuntheDamnBall's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Of course he stepped up and bought the team, and he was probably the only "local" who could possibly have done so. I do recognize that he is a self-made success in the business world, and he has every right to run the Sabres like a business. If he believes the team will make money with salaries at $28 million, then he has every right to make money. But with the NHL coming off of a potentially damaging (owner-imposed) lockout, and the organization coming off of the Rigas scandal and the embarrassment of having the NHL pay its bills, it would be nice to throw the fans a bone and bring in a marquee goal scorer- something the team has lacked since the Lafontaine/Mogilny years in the early/mid-90's. I do believe the fans trust and respect Golisano; but it is hard to believe that he is REALLY concerned about turning a profit of $3 million when he has dumped over $100 million into unsuccessful political aspirations. I was at the Sabres-Bruins game Friday night. Second home game, against a rival, Friday night....Attendance: 13,000 and change. Thousands of empty blue seats, including one or two entire sections. Perhaps a big-name player who you could market would be worth the extra salary in exchange for additional ticket revenue. While I agree, he did rescue hockey in Buffalo, I hope he doesn't rest on that accomplishment and expect that the fans will love him all the same. If he continues to throw money around every which way except into the team, I can see the fans voicing their disapproval. -
Golisano enrolls in GOP
smokinandjokin replied to RuntheDamnBall's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Wealthy businessmen who take a run at politics always amaze me. These guys spend upwards of $75 million of their own money to lose an election. I just don't get it. In 1994, Golisano spent $6.6 million on the governor's race and got a mere 4 percent of the vote. In 1998, he spent $13 million and doubled his support. In 2002 he spent $75 million. In the final week of the campaign he was reported to be spending $1 million a day. He garnered 14% of the vote. Unbelievable. This seems to be purely ego-driven to bankroll your own campaign and throw that kind of money around. Only he knows how much he plans on tossing into the pot this year. But he couldn't pay Paul Kariya $5 million per season and he wants to keep the Sabres $14 million below the salary cap....Sheeesh. -
She represents all that is right with the world. Nice job.

Well, both the Bills and the Jets (Week 2) have beaten Miami at home, in what can only be called "ugly" wins for each team. Does this mean the Bills-Jets game will stack up to be another Battle for the Basement in the AFC Least? Obviously the major difference is that the Jets won with Pennington, and now Vinny Testacle gets the start. I'm assuming the Bills run Holcomb out there again. Various stats: Miami @ Buf game stats Miami @ NYJ game stats Holcomb 20-26 for 169 Pennington 19-30 for 190, but 8-8 on 4th qtr TD drive to seal the win McGahee 31 for 86, TD Martin 31 for 72 Total Yards- Miami 323, Buffalo 236 Miami 235, NYJ 271 Bills won TOP 35 mins to 25 mins Jets won TOP 34 mins to 26 mins Turnovers- Miami 5, Buffalo 1 Miami 1, NYJ 0 Should be a pretty evenly matched game. Both teams will be looking to stop the run and expose the QB. In a low scoring game, I see Moorman's punting and Terrance McGee/Smith/Clements on returns making the difference. Forecast is chilly and chance of rain, so I'm sure turnovers will have an impact (as they always do.) Who is the Bills biggest concern on the Jets offense? Vinny, Martin, Coles, McCareins? Normally that is easy, you would have to say Martin. But he is yet to have a good game this year (although the Bills have a way of making every back look like Barry Sanders.) Martin only had 59 yds last week in a win. I say disrupting Vinny and making him uncomfortable will be the key.

What stays in my mind is that there appeared to be no stopping the Fins without a turnover on the last drive. Brown fumbled on the 13 yard line after a journeyman QB strolled down the field. I had a horrible feeling that we were going to lose that game. Thankfully, the refs let the fumble play out and utilized the replay to check it. We have all seen that play blown dead and the runner called down, which makes the replay unviewable. Brown's knee was a LOT closer to being down than many other situations when it is blown dead. Kudos to the refs.

I'm not pretending to be at a higher level intellectually than anyone else here. In fact, I don't post too often in PPP because I am uninformed about a lot of the issues, mainly for the reason that I don't care enough about most of them to get involved in a debate. I will say that I am educated and well-traveled, and I do try to take a more worldly view on most things. I identify with both sides of American politics on various issues, depending on what's what. IMO, the worst thing you can do is blindly follow party lines instead of coming to your own conclusions. It's not straddling the fence, it's weighing issues individually as oppposed to grouping them in with a collective ideal. When I get over here to read some topics, I do learn quite a bit. But many times, the topics seem to deteriorate into the same responses, boiling down to "The left/right are idiots" and "The media is biased." When I saw this topic had slumped to that level on the second or third post, I said "Yawn." -
Our overrated secondary? They seem to be the only ones holding this ship together. When you play press coverage and a saftey blitzes and doesn't get to the QB, a big play can result. Other than that, our corners have been outstanding. Curtis is sluggish after a career high in carries last year. I think 75yds would be a big game for him.

I didn't think it looked all that bad. Didn't really hyperextend too much, just kinda locked up. Obviously that's a moot point if he is out for 6 weeks, but I have seen much worse. Also, the Charger was knocked over and fell forward right as Ben was stepping into a throw. Thankfully it was not an intentional knee shot- that would be tough for Steelers fans to take. After watching Bills-Fins, anyone get the feeling we are nowhere near the top teams in the NFL? Either of those teams would have slaughtered the Bills last night.
-
If the team plays like they played against Miami, I don't see much better than a 5-11 season, regardless of the QB. An effort like that could beat the Jets this week, it could possibly beat Oakland on the road, and maybe squeak out one more win with a lucky break somewhere else. Other than that, wins will be hard to come by with a similar performance. Take a look at the schedule, this is going to get brutal.

San Antonio wanted a team for the longest time, but there's no way the Saints go there with L.A. standing by. S.A. showed what they were made of when the Bills game had 13,000 seats left on the Thursday before the game. (Granted, if I was a casual fan, Bills-Saints would not be the game I would go to either.) I don't think people in L.A. should be too excited; their current NFL team, USC, is better than most that would move there.
