I agree with you that Johansson is more suited to be a winger than a center. Krueger did point out that Kahun has played the center position and has the right makeup (instincts) to play the position. However, he explained that he didn't want to overload him with that responsibility right away. It wouldn't be surprising that if that line is kept in tact that sometime this season or most likely next season Kahun will get an opportunity to demonstrate whether he can handle that pivot responsibility.

It seems like a natural spot where they split the center duty a bit over what's left of the season.  It doesn't need to be 50/50, but test out Kahun for a small portion of that time.  If they do in fact have chemistry, that chemistry will be there regardless of who is at center.

The whole “in my sweats” piece is 1,000% me. Ha ha, if I come home and put on sweats I’m not leaving. I don’t care what the offer is.

That bit was very Murray Goldberg.

I just caught the episode last night and it lived up to the hype from this thread.  John Hamm had the LD routine down perfectly.  It kind of makes me wish they actually would make that movie/tv show.

I wish that the league and those involved in the CHL could come up with an agreement that allows exempting one or two high end players to the AHL per parent club.  Maybe mandating a fee to the clubs for losing those top shelf players?

I can't picture them ever agreeing to it.  They get watered down so quickly if they allow players to go.  And just imagine the case where one team is loaded up but then they get raided repetitively due to this rule.  They're going to be incredibly pissed.  And you can't just setup a rule where a team can only lose X number of players because there's no way to decide which of the NHL teams gets their guy and which doesn't.

And there are already fees for the NHL teams if they keep and 18-19 year old player.

Can someone let me know whether Cozens is eligible to play in the AHL next year? I thought I read somewhere that because of his age he will have to either play in the NHL next year or be sent back to the juniors?

Right, he's too young for the AHL.  He would need to be 20 years old before 12/31/20 in order to go to the AHL.  His 20th birthday is 2/9/21.  The other option is that he's allowed to go if he has already played 4 seasons in the CHL.  He only has 3.  He does have one extra season where he played only 3 games plus 12 in the playoffs.  That one doesn't seem to count since everything has already said he's not AHL eligible.

Ouch. That says a lot more about mentally weak players than it does their talent level. Every year, post all star break when the games get tighter as teams gear up for the stretch and get into playoff mode, this team crumbles. That’s gonna be a lot harder to fix than just by adding new players.

To be fair, they had already crumbled by the point those other teams were gearing up for the stretch.  I don't think rubble can crumble.

I have not listened to the Bots interview on GR from yesterday, but did read some excerpts on Twitter...and its kinda scary on these two points

    1) Scoring chances and expected goals are subjective...prolly why Risto is still here. Bots sounds like he does not believe in advanced numbers, or they have numbers internally that don't agree with the public numbers. Either way, scary to think this guy only goes by "eye test"

    2) Wants to resign Simmonds????Are you kidding me?

Please listen to the interview.  I don't know whether or not it will give you some clarifications on your two points, but it's definitely better than just basing your opinion on a couple twitter excerpts.

Be that as it may, JBotts was in a hurry to get the deal done before ROR’s $7m bonus came due in that July. ROR’s cap hit was gonna come off the books, regardless, after he was dealt, so I don’t see that as a factor at all. For whatever reason, the Sabres didn’t want to pay out $7m for a player that was out the door and that limited the number of potential trade partners.

It makes more sense to me that TPegs wondered why he should give a guy $7m for nothing than it does for JBotts to deliberately limit his options. Just because TPegs is made of money and has had to spend a ton on fired coaches, which is strictly a function of a coach’s contract btw, doesn’t mean he isn’t willing to save $7m when he can.

And I can definitely see a scenario where a guy doesn't want to be the one to pay the bonus purely out of spite.

And that Ristolainen video upthread?  That was hilarious.

Spare me the sham indignation about cracking a window at a Timmy Ho's.

If that was a reason to get down on a player, then the same thing would apply to Bruce, Jimbo and a host of other Bills over the years...

If one organization is willing to accept it, that doesn't mean that they all are.  If it was in fact something that Pegula didn't want on his team, he's entitled to that opinion.  It's a whole different world than the early 90s.  Personally, I think this thing is overblown here, but I could see it being a sour point with a front office.  From a PR stance, I'd bet a team was much more concerned about Kane's accusations, but the build your own drive through was going to catch their eye too.

@plenzmd1, yeah, that Horton stuff always bugs me.  When was a statue put up?  I haven't been in that arena in probably 10 years at this point.

IDK.   Who on the defense has he brought in that's an upgrade?     Montour's just average, Miller less so.     Joker looks like a good prospect, but he makes almost as many mistakes and giveaways as nice plays.     Dahlin doesn't count--any GM with a pulse would have made that pick.

IMO, saying the team is in a better place moving forward is like saying a snail is faster than an earthworm.    The potential for Botts to **** this summer's restocking remains huge in my mind...

Murray's last team was regularly dressing Cody Franson, Justin Falk, and Taylor Fedun.  Guhle was the only d-man in Rochester who at this point has any potential NHL career in his future.  There should be at least three now (to be fair, the most promising guy in Rochester, Borgen, was a Murray pick)).  So yeah, the blue line is in much better shape today than it was then.  And like I suggested, if I'm building a team, I personally think that it needs to start from back to front.

This isn't meant to be some screaming endorsement of Botterill because it's not.  Whoever is doing the job next year, they just happen to have a little more to work with than Botterill did on day 1.  With as bad as they've been for so long now, the gains have to start somewhere, no matter how small they are.

This post essentially captures my thoughts on Botts as well.    He doesn't appear to have the slightest talent for spotting NHL-level talent.    Batting 0% is maybe too kind--I'd put his hit rate in the negative category as there seems to be no over-arching team concept in any of his acquisitions.

Still, at the heart of everything hanging over the team is the stench left by Tim Murray's reign.    A new coat of paint and some re-arrangement of the deck chairs has been nowhere near enough to overcome the after effects of that debacle...

I wouldn't say no eye for NHL talent.  He can spot it on the blue line.  He's the bizarro Murray in that regard, all D, no F.  Honestly though, I think the team is left in a better spot moving forward with that approach than with Murray's.  The next GM is going to have an easier time moving forward with the cap space and a solid blue line foundation.

    Gary Coleman?

I think you may have the right show but the wrong character.  Gary's not looking too good these days.

Lehner had mental health + substance abuse issues his entire Buffalo career (Murray was with him in Ottawa too, remember). He didn’t clean up until he left Buffalo. That 2015 draft was deep. They could’ve had a very good young player with that pick. Even if they had drafted the goalie Murray was supposedly interested in (Samsonov) they’d have been better off. Lehner has played pretty well for 2 different teams now (since buffalo) and both chose to move on from him after a season (or less).

The thing with Lehner that sticks out to me is that if he's some sort of super goalie now, why is he already on his 3rd team in 2 years?  Vegas has 2 more years of Fleury at $7 million, so come July it'll be 4 teams in 2 years.  It has to make you wonder.

Hutton gave up an identical goal against Ottawa.  The momentum from his sweeping poke check takes him completely out of position and he has no chance of covering the net afterward.  Too bad because I had just said to himself that he was having a nice game.

It really doesn't matter how well he's playing if it's a close game.  He's capable of these moments on every single play.  I'd say he's prone to them.  And there's definitely been more than just those two stick swipe goals, I'm just not the type that can ever reference the exact game.

Miller made a major mistake on their last goal by not staying in position and they capitalized on it.

It's a brain fart for sure, but how many goals has Hutton given up this year as a direct result of that stick swipe move?  That thing is so high risk/low reward.  It's another item on the long list of Carter Hutton moves where his momentum takes him out of position.  There has to be a book on him, to take your wrap around attempts wide, leaving the opposite site of the net wide open.  I don't see any what that he's not on this roster next year, but I hope that Bales can coach that out of him.

But whatever, it's just one loss.  If people think they needed to go 15-5 for any shot at the playoffs, that run would include some losses.  And at the same time, Toronto's not going to go 0-20.  There's going to be a Buffalo loss here and also some Toronto/Florida wins.  Now they just need to bounce back, something they've been horrible at doing.  They did look like a different team last night, so hopefully that different team continues to show up.  More games like that, along with some puck luck to the Eichel line and they're going to wind up in the win column more often than not.
