Which WR prospect will the Bengals screw us out of?
DrDawkinstein replied to DrDawkinstein's topic in The Stadium Wall
Not sure the coach matters when we are up against the cap, Poyer is a shell, and cutting him saves $5.5M. No brainer. But I get what youre sayin. -

Very good point about QB costs and the need to make others better. But I wouldnt go past the 3rd round without taking a WR. Take Poyer out of your list too. We have no Safeties going into next year. -

It's not sneaky. It's a draft thread. So what? We can talk draft year round. -

We're going to have to cut Poyer, White, Morse, Harty and others just to get even on cap. We arent dropping $25M+/yr on another WR. Even with all of Beane's magic. -

I could see that. But that early, we are drafting another 3-tech instead of 1-tech where we have a hole. 1-techs can usually be found in the 2nd round or later. Maybe WR/DT in rounds 1/2, then DBs the rest of the way. Our FO has an easier time finding late round DBs than 1st rounders so that works for me. For a deep class, any of those later WRs you like? -

Considering CB is a premium position and our Secondary will be wiped out, it's likely. I dont think it's so Billsy tho. It's the modern passing NFL. -

I think our 1st pick will be CB. I also think the fans have a much larger demand for RT than our FO. The OL is playing the best we've seen in years, maybe decades. No need to spend a 1st there when we have bigger holes elsewhere. I could see New England, Arizona, Green Bay, Jets, and Broncos all possibly taking a WR if their guy is there, so agree Odunze isnt falling to us either. So who we got? -

The Bills need to draft a WR. The Bengals are about to lose Tee Higgins, and once again find themselves without Burrow and likely with another Top 10 pick. As of today, the Bills are at #17 and the Bengals #12. I expect the Bills to end up around #15 and Bengals around #10. Neither team will have a chance at Marvin Harrison Jr. He'll be a top 5 pick, hopefully not to New England. I imagine Odunze will be off the board before either of us pick as well. Although Odunze is close to a Higgins clone and Bengals might end up pretty high if they likely lose out. Looking at Draftek's list (just to get a list), who do we like? I could see Cincy going back to the LSU well and grabbing Nabers, which would leave Coleman or Egbuka depending on who drafts between us. Or do we go CB then get one of the 2nd round WRs? Anyone there to get excited about? -
Yeah, it's pretty simple and no reason for fans to get so worked up. He's been disappointing, and I didnt even expect much from him. But he's an easy cut, and saves us money.

Oof, that's an ugly list. Reich, absolutely not. Bienemy likely isnt making it out of Washington and will promoted to HC Harbaugh is a douche, has bad blood with Jim Kelly, and I'm not sure who his OC would be or what type of Offense he brings considering he's historically been a Greg Roman guy. Dabol is interesting. As is Ben Johnson.

Every sports channel does it. Shannon Sharp/Skip Bayless are the kings of hot takes to drive engagement and theyre over on Fox. 99% of sports reporting seems to be hot takes to get reactions and drive clicks. Which kinda makes sense considering sports reporting is just fancy marketing for all these leagues. None of it should be taken too seriously.

Let's be clear: Spears is an ABSOLUTE CLOWN on NFL Live. He's only there to give dumb hot takes for the real pros like Orlovsky and Ryan Clark to play off of. Spears made that show unwatchable through the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He's dialed it back a little bit now that they are back in studio. But dude is just there to make jokes and throw out trash takes. I'm not excusing it, just explaining and denoting for anyone who happens to catch NFL Live. Give me Orlovsky, Clark, and Kimes and you got a good panel.

I think given a bigger role AJE could be a game changer. We've seen it already. How many other guys on our DL have INTs this year? Let alone a pick-6? He's way more dynamic than, say, Shaq Lawson who is one of those complementary role players. Rousseau/Oliver/???/AJE could be a great starting DL as long as we fill in that DT spot correctly. Whether that's Jones or a rookie or both.

The second paragraph applies to all analysts. White or Black. Everyone bashes Allen for his turn overs, but praises Mahomes as if he never turns it over, and dont even mention Tua. That just stems from him being a project and him being so wild his first couple of seasons versus the more pedigree guys. I dont think there's a race factor there like there is with his draft position (which is actually a valid discussion if presented properly).
-
Hasnt AJE been part of that dominant line? There's only 4 guys out there at a time, and we'll have Oliver and Rousseau back. Maybe D Jones too, or another DT. Who has been propping AJE up so much that wont be here next year?
-
Good take. My thing with Johnson, besides how well he's played for us over the years and the fact he's one of the few playmakers on D, is we are already gutting our DBs. No need to make yet another hole to fill there. I'm ok going with Bates for a season, but wish we would've drafted Morse's replacement over the last 2 drafts. *sheds a tear as I gently stroke my picture of Creed Humphrey* Agreed that the OL is playing great this year. Ah, gotcha. And physically he should. But it would screw us financially.

Brian Burns will be the biggest name out there. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/all/defensive-end// How is this relevant to this thread?

Agreed on 99.9% of this except for your mention of cutting Johnson. It would save us close to $8M, but I'd rather see us re-work his deal and give him another extension as opposed to cutting him outright. Another 3 year extension and he finishes his career as a Bill. Throw Morse in there instead, that gets us that $8.5M back.

I thought the same exact thing and was just schooled to the cap facts on this last week. I thought a retirement wipes out any dead money since the player is walking away. But nope, it counts the same as a cut or trade and escalates everything to an immediate dead cap hit. We would need Von to sign a completely new deal, retire on that, and then hire him as Asst to the Regional Manager.

Staley is so bad he cant even get his talented team to those big stages. Not that Im defending McD. But Staley is truly horrible. My biggest fear is that Staley gets fired, McD gets to stay one more year, and he brings Staley in as DC. -
AJE. I love Floyd, and really want to keep both, but he's too old to give big money if I have to choose just one. Learn our lesson from Von. This would screw us SO HARD on the cap. All of his dead money hits if he retires. The Bills would beg him to stay active and just not show up. It would save us like $9M.

Agreed on Orlovsky and Kimes. Kimes is great for a non-player. With regards to Josh and race and the Talking heads... There are a number of black Talking Heads who were insulted that the NFL drafted a small-school project in the top 10 over heisman winning, big program Lamar Jackson. They assigned that blame to Josh like it was his fault, and will take every opportunity through his career to point out his issues. I get their frustration, but it isnt fair to take it out on Josh like they do.

The Vikings didnt even score on that drive. The Bills were up 27-23. The Defense stopped them on the goal line, and got the ball back with the lead 27-23. The Cam Lewis play should have been irrelevant as long as our Center and QB execute a simple snap. That loss was NOT on Cam Lewis. -
