Greenberg - A Jets Fan - Pushing Back Against The Allen Hate

I dont think the point of that graphic is to say they are the best two QBS, as much as it shows Josh's numbers align very closely to (if not better than) Mahomes, yet Josh is constantly criticized and Mahomes is constantly worshipped.- 181 replies

I hope that Beane stops listening to McDermott when drafting
DrDawkinstein replied to margolbe's topic in The Stadium Wall
Right. And this was the first year Josh's new contract was supposed to kick in (but the restructure kicked that can a bit). So with an $18M cap hit, we are in that same situation as everyone but the Vikings. Now, that is all set to change next year (unless we restructure Josh again). Where in 2024 the Bills will are spending $155M on Offense and $120M on Defense, flipping our differential to a +$35M number. -

Hey some real info! Ok, lets take a look... 1. Bills spend a ton more on Defense than Offense We spent $111M on Defense and $91M on Offense. $10M difference doesnt seem that imbalanced given it that is 1 decent contract. Or splitting it to even both sides out would just mean 1 more $5M/yr player on Offense. Meh. 2. Bills spend a ton more on Defense than league average. Bills spent $111M. League average is $84M. So we're on to something there. This year. 3. Bills Offense:Defense Spending Differential is out of line with the rest of the league, and/or hindering our team Here are the teams with the lowest Offense:Defense spend (meaning the spend favors the Defense) 1. Panthers -$31M 2. Steelers -$25M 3. Bills -$11.5M 4. Packers -$11M 5. 49ers -$11M 6. Seahawks -$8.5M 7. Patriots -$6M 8. Dolphins -$6M 9. Chargers -$6M 10. Vikings -$4.4M Here are the teams with the highest Offense:Defense spend (meaning the spend favors the Offense) 1. Lions +$50M 2. Raiders +$46M 3. Ravens +$42M 4. Browns +$41.5M 5. Rams +$34M 6. Chiefs +$31M 7. Broncos +$30M 8. Texans +$27M 9. Cardinals +$26M 10. Giants +$24M My biggest takeaway: Lots of playoff teams in both groups and lots of stinkers in both groups. The other thing I noticed is if you click around on the different years at the top of that overthecap page, teams jump around drastically year to year. So there really isn't a way to say "X team always spends too much on this side of the ball". Really seems like it comes down to specific contracts in each individual year. If there's something else you want these numbers to say then my ears are open. -

Because the point you are trying to prove is how much the Bills spend on Offense vs how much the Bills spend on Defense. Telling us where we rank against the rest of the league in Defensive spending doesnt tell us anything towards the main argument. A team could be FIRST in defensive spending and still spend more on offense. You have yet to prove any of this. Not saying it isnt that way, but you havent shown it. That's right, my bad. Looks like I had spotrac set to 2024. They're at about 15% of our cap. Throw in the next biggest contract (Morse, offense) now you are at 20%. Throw in the next biggest contract after that (Dawkins, offense), now you are at about 25%. Then we finally start getting some Defensive contracts. -
I get the utility of him. I just meant it more as way to avoid all these embarrassing moments with a coaching staff who doesnt believe in him but cant say it, but then someone leaks it anyways, and then the HC has to back track. Cut him and remove all doubt and wonder. Plow ahead with whatever backup loser they have in waiting. Gonna be the same result anyways.
-
The Jets should just cut him already. I believe they could absorb the cap hit right now, escalate the dead money hit to this year, and move on. He isnt the future. He isnt even the right now. Just causing more issues than solving.

Meaningless stat factoid without providing any other context (or real numbers/stats). It's a relative statement. "2nd most". So what? That does not intrinsically state we are lopsided towards that side of the ball. Just that other teams havent spent as much. Provide the context to other teams, or at least the context to our own Offense, and some detail. Otherwise, there is no point being made here. -

Whichever stat you want to dig out to fit your narrative! I replied earlier showing that the drafting has not been out of balance. @TheyCallMeAndy just provided a link showing that Free Agency has been balanced. So let's move those goal posts to cap %! Something will prove this right eventually! (spoiler alert: with Josh and Stef alone accounting for 30% of the cap, not sure that's going to work out either) -
Bills Cap Breakdown by Greg Tompsett

Restructuring IS Pegula dumping a bunch of money into the bank account. When you restructure and convert base salary to guaranteed money, the owner has to cut a check for that guaranteed amount at that time. It doesnt come out of the normal cap bucket paid for by revenue. Every restructure we pull IS Pegula dumping cash into the team so Beane can go sign other players. -

I dont disagree with that. That is why it's crucial to draft our next WR1 in this draft. Then we have a 1WR on a cheap rookie deal throughout the 4 years left on Diggs' contract. Then you are paying a total of about $30M for TWO 1WRs. Bonus if we snag a WR in the 1st and have that 5th year option as a cheap year the year Diggs is gone. -

Not worth it imo. Both moves Tompsett has labeled "Painful but Possible" I've thought of as "Must Do" for weeks now. Especially if we are able to extend Douglas. -

DrDawkinstein replied to DrDawkinstein's topic in The Stadium Wall
Yeah, I saw it more as a menu to pick through to get us to about $50M under. Mix and match as you like! But the Hines situation could also be benefiting Hines and what a more thorough investigation following a grievance might reveal. -
Greg Tompsett is making the podcast rounds in the bye week this week and talking cap. Gave a pretty detailed plan on Cover1 and showed how the Bills could get themselves to about $72M UNDER the cap. Or $56M under without anything too crazy. Worth watching, or at least clicking around through, for anyone concerned with our cap situation next year. He was also on Locked On Bills to discuss our Free Agents and re-signing options As a little preview, the detailed plan to get to $72M... No Brainers - Cap Saved Restructure Josh - $23M Restructure Diggs - $13M Restructure Ed - $3M Release Hines - $5M Release Harty - $4M Total - $48M Being $29M OVER cap right now, these moves alone put us $19M UNDER. Tompsett's Preferred/Likely Moves - Cap Savings Extend Dawkins - $7M Extend Douglas - $6M Extend Johnson - $5M Release Siran Neal - $3M Release Sam Martin - $1M Restructure McGovern - $3M With these moves added to the above, the Bills would be $44M UNDER Painful but Possible - Cap Savings Release Poyer - $5.5M Release Tre - $6M Bills now $56M UNDER Prefer Not - Cap Savings Restructure Milano - $2.5M Restructure Knox - $6M Trade Elam - $165k Release Bates - $1.5M Release Morse - $5.5M Bills now $72M UNDER I type all that to once again reiterate, the cap is a myth.

I hope that Beane stops listening to McDermott when drafting
DrDawkinstein replied to margolbe's topic in The Stadium Wall
Ok, lets! (I honestly have no idea how this is going to go as I type it out) 2019 - Ed Oliver. I don't see an Offensive player that was taken in the rest of the 1st round that I would take over Ed. Certainly no weapons. If we want to use the magic of hindsight and say we could have taken Deebo Samuel in the 1st, I don't think that is being reasonable with how everyone felt on draft day. Now, AJ Brown or Metcalf in the 2nd is a valid argument. I know there were posters here begging for DK in the 2nd. And we wouldnt have even needed to trade up like we did for Cody Ford. But we did make an offensive pick in the 2nd. (And we picked a guy who plays offense. badum tss) 2020 - 1st round pick, Diggs. So there's that. For Epenesa's pick, I guess there is JK Dobbins right after, but not too impressed there. Denzel Mims at WR? Yikes. Given AJE's emergence this year, seems like the right pick. Hope we can re-sign him. 2021 - Rousseau/Basham. I think we all know what round 2 should have been. It's imo Beane's biggest mistake to date. However, I don't see an offensive weapon or even contributor we should have picked over Rousseau. Even with the benefit of hindsight. 2022 - Elam. Reminiscent of 2021, Tyler Linderbaum was there, I was hoping for him, but alas... However, it's not like Linderbaum has been amazing, and I dont think he's much of a weapon. I do think with either him or Humphrey we win the Vikings game. And they would have helped us get out of Morse's contract earlier. But I dont think we missed anything to weaponize the offense. Breece Hall I guess. But a 1st round RB? Sure, anything is better than what Elam has been so far. But I still would have gone Defense here and picked Dax Hill instead. edit: I typed this out all the way until my 2pm call started so didnt have any time to provide commentary. Looking back... So, out of 8 possible picks across the first 2 rounds of these drafts, 3 went to Offense and 5 went to Defense. Only 1 year, 2020 2nd round, did Beane miss the opportunity to add a real weapon but did use that pick on Offense. He twice missed on drafting Morse's replacement, and both of those picks were major whiffs on Defense. Honestly seems like the balance isnt tooo far off. It's more that those whiffs make it hurt worse. Ford, Basham, Elam instead of Brown, Humphrey, Hill/Hall. -

Interesting idea. The roster needs to be gutted anyways. White, Poyer, and Morse need to go based on age/injury/physiology alone. If we bring in a new HC and therefore a new DC, I could see them moving Milano. But at the same time, he's the closest thing we have to a normal sized LB if the new coaches plan on running any other scheme. So.. 🤷♂️ That all said, I'm pretty sure trading a player escalates all their guaranteed/dead money. So trading him would be an even bigger hit to the cap for us. -

I'm on record criticizing Beane for too many singles and doubles and not enough home runs. However, with your example of Allen, Beane hasnt had any other picks in the top 10. Usually mid to late 20s. So there is that. But still not an excuse. It's part of the reason I've about cashed it in for this season and hope the Bills end up around 12-15. We wasted half the season on Dorsey, it's a lost cause at this point. Let's see what Beane and Co. can do with a decent position throughout the draft for once. Especially with how critical this draft will be given all the players we will need to replace. -

Correction: McD has FAR LESS say in the draft than Beane does. Beane is the guy making the picks and ultimately responsible for them. -

I guess you mean Draft Investment. Because there has been a TON of Free Agency and trade investment into the Offense. That said - Josh, Jimbo, Torrence, Dawkins, Brown, Knox, Kincaid, Davis, Shakir were all acquired via the draft. Heck even Diggs was acquired via a 1st round pick. (And we'll forget about Singletary and Moss since they are gone) So outside of Morse and McGovern the entire starting Offense has been drafted. I agree we should snag a WR early (and maybe more than 1 in this draft), but "investments" have been made in the Offense. I think the main difference is more of our Offensive picks have hit, likely because of the Josh Effect, so we dont have to keep going back to the well like we do with DL (although one could argue 3 RBs and 2 early TEs is going back to the well).
