This. The insecurity from McD is palpable. I think there are plenty of other coaches who are far more comfortable in their own skin (Belichick, Carroll, Rex, McDaniel, McVay, etc) who if a story such as this 9/11 speech leaked would meet the press and laugh it off like "Yeah, hey, us coaches have to make a LOT of speeches and they can't all be winners. I used a horrible analogy in my 2nd training camp as a still-new coach, and sure learned a lesson there, haha. We still laugh about it around the office to this day." OWNING mistakes is how you get people to move past them. A bit of self-deprecation can actually get people on your side. All this apologizing and explaining and excusing and re-explaining, and making up stuff about losing loved ones in the attack... just keeps the fire alive and digs a deeper hole. But he isnt secure enough to do that. And it shows in this situation, and on the field, and with the players.

Scroll up and read my prior post that pulled ALL the quotes from the article. He wasnt the only offensive player quoted. Torrence and Murray are in there too. They all confirm there was another meeting to address the comments, but not a single comment about backing McD. Just weird that not a single player outside of Hyde has anything positive or supportive to say. Even in the least bit.

Right. So why is the only thing the players are talking about that dumb 9/11 speech? If I was a player, and I loved/liked/respected McD, and a mic was put in front of my face yesterday, I would have given my guy a vote of confidence and called out the article as BS. Or at least given my own opposing anecdote. No one did except Micah Hyde. Not a single other player, let alone a team leader like Josh, has come out and said the perception of McD stated in that article is wrong and that they love and support their guy. I wouldnt call Sherfield's quote sticking up for McD. He just stated they had a meeting about the old speech and no one cares. No duh. It would be different if Sherfield said something like "The way they are trying to portray Coach in the media doesnt represent what I've seen at all." Or anything close to that.

If that article is the best example of players supporting McD, then McD is sunk. And all this article talks about is McD again addressing his 9/11 speech with the team. Ok, so Hyde, which we already knew. Let's see what the Offensive players have to say in pouring out support and love for their coach... Nothing major from Sherfield there other than stating the obvious. We know McD doesnt support terrorism. How about from the rook... Hmm, how about from the vet Latavius Murray... Ok, so a whole lot of talking about McD again addressing the speech from 2019. But not a single quote about how wrong the article is, and nothing about it misrepresenting McD or how the players feel. Maybe they just weren't asked the right question. But I've had great bosses/leaders and if something like this came out about them, I would be front and center to whoever would listen railing against the BS. Reid Ferguson had the most supportive quote

I hope that Beane stops listening to McDermott when drafting

He's under contract for another 4 seasons! We can get out of it in 2 tho. But we shouldn't. Dude should be allowed to play out that contract and finish his career here. All the more reason to draft our next WR1 this year. Get two WR1s for the price of one for the next 4 years! -
And even if it's not offensive, is what they accomplished so great or impressive? Especially given how lax security was back then? It's like his other example of teamwork. He seems to not think these things through to a logical, motivating conclusion. "Take the “Niagara Falls” speech. In December 2021, locals will recall the news of a woman deliberately driving into the waterway that spills into the falls. She drifted down the Niagara River before her vehicle was lodged against a rock about 50 yards from the brink. McDermott studied up and pieced together a speech. The coach explained how members from the Coast Guard did everything they could to save the woman. He built up the drama. Players held on tight for an inspiring apex, and… nothing. He said the woman died. End of story. The complete absence of a point had some players biting their tongues, trying their hardest not to laugh."

Yes. Neither Levi nor Jerry nor anyone else is going to say they arent currently happy. Especially in this article where they are talking about how bad it was on the Bills. Jerry - back at home in Houston and still making $5M/year for sitting around = HAPPY Levi - a UDFA who not only still has a job in the NFL, but is making $4M/year = HAPPY You are getting way too deep on an off-hand description.

Ok, I was very bummed after the news story, but now I feel better picturing you wearing this while sticking your arm in a cow and quietly singing to yourself "Oh, oh, oh, go totally crazy, forget I'm a lady, Men's shirts, short skirts Oh, oh, oh, really go wild, yeah, doin' it in style Oh, oh, oh, get in the action, feel the attraction Color my hair, do what I dare Oh, oh, oh, I wanna be free, yeah, to feel the way I feel"

Ehh, maybe. But most of what I see about Belichick from former players is how funny he actually is. Almost the opposite of McD who has a nice, friendly public demeanor but can't relate to his players. Belichick has a gruff reputation, but behind the scenes players think he's one of the funniest guys of all time. https://www.si.com/nfl/patriots/news/new-england-patriots-bill-belichick-humor-funny-ezekiel-elliott-juju-smith-schuster https://www.irishstar.com/sport/other-sports/bill-belichicks-funniest-moments-new-30364964 https://theathletic.com/2889665/2021/10/29/its-fun-at-gunpoint-the-comedy-stylings-of-bill-belichick/

That's my point. They did that well only based on their top Defense. Throw in a real QB, let alone a dual threat like Allen, and we have at least 2 more wins (Denver and Raiders) which puts us in the playoffs. And away we go. Of course it's speculation, and pointless. But it has as much creedance as any statement saying none of the other coaches would do better with Allen on their team. We all lived the drought. We all should know/remember our biggest issue was not being able to find a QB.

While I agree about comparing sports reporting to anything as serious as Watergate, I also think you are just arbitrarily drawing lines as to what you deem "good sources" vs "bad sources". Spain is a joke, but he's hardly the only source. If any of Chad Hall, Jerry Hughes, Lorenzo Alexander are in there (which is likely), that's decent enough for me. There's enough positive in the article to show it wasnt just a bunch of Spains being bitter.

There's a ton of positive stuff in the article if you actually read it. Some of it even in the free parts. I quoted this yesterday as an example: "His intent — players repeat — is pure. The coach who ended the Bills’ 17-year playoff drought realizes how badly locals are dying for their first Super Bowl. The quest consumes him. “He never, ever, ever does a damn thing with any other intention than to empower and grow the Buffalo Bills franchise,” this ex-Bill said. “That’s a fact. Now, whether or not the *****’s going to work or whether or not the players are going to receive it well? That’s a different conversation. But it doesn’t come from an evil ‘Sean McDermott wants all the praise and all the credit.’ He genuinely wants every person in that organization to thrive and win a lot of games to the point of exhaustion. “All he wants to do is help that team win. Now, that’s the truth.”

It's not your or my or our job to find them. When we fired Rex, did you even know Sean McDermott existed? I didn't. But the consulting firm helped Terry identify him as a candidate, and the professionals worked it out from there. Look in our own division. The Miami Dolphins. They had a Defensive-minded, supposed "high character" guy who couldn't get the most from his talented roster and was neutering their franchise QB. They fire Flores and bring in McDaniel, an unheard of dork, and Tua sees immediate improvement and here they are in year 2 as the #1 seed in the AFC and about to take the Division from us. No major tear down and rebuild, just a quick change to a younger, modern, Offensive minded HC. Heck with that said, if the O continues to put up 30+ every game, hand the keys to Brady and let's roll. The new coach may or may not take us to the promise land, but we know based on MULTIPLE examples that McDermott simply can't/won't.
