Nah, it's $22.6M in dead cap right now. Or half and half after June 2. https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/drew-brees-mulling-nfl-retirement-saints-restructure-all-pros-contract-to-free-up-millions-in-cap-space/ "Should he retire now, the Saints can carry him on the roster until June 1 and officially retire him on June 2, which would split his dead money over 2021 and 2022 at roughly $11 million per year as opposed to taking the full weight of the hit upfront. If the contract went unchanged and Brees chooses to hang up his cleats, the Saints would suffer a $22.65 million hit -- the sum of what would now be divided by two." https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/drew-brees-4542/

He's retiring on June 2. If he retires after June 1, the Saints can split his dead money ($22M) over two years, 2021 and 2022, at $11M a piece. If he retires right now, they are on the hook for $22M in dead cap this year. All he did with this restructure is allow them to free some space before June 2, so they can make other moves in the meantime.

Kinda the opposite, really. After the draft, the UDFAs end up in a better situation where they have a say and get to pick where they go. We lost out on a couple of UDFAs just last year.
-
Agreed there are plenty of other drafts that were better. Throughout Bills and NFL history. But man, tough to compare modern drafts with those older drafts. The 1985 draft was 12 rounds! Bills had the 1st pick, and 17 total picks! Frank Reich was the first pick of the 3rd round, and he was our 5th player taken! GMs today would kill to have that many chances.

Goff has his issues and isnt elite, but he is a whole level above and beyond Drew Lock. Plus 2 #1s as well. Easy choice. (And good points up-thread about the new Lions GM being from the Rams and already familiar with Goff)

I look at it this way: Darnold is the 2nd best QB in this draft when compared to Fields and the kid from BYU (who I will refer to as "the new blaine gabbart"). If Fields and BYU are predicted to go top-10, then a late 1st for Darnold is a good deal. I think Pittsburgh would be wise to pull this off.

Also, I'm kinda mad at this kid for stealing the alias I use when I hit the strip clubs.

Glad he is a QB and not a WR, or else someone might say "Booty was streaking down the field WIDE OPEN!"

Back in Madden2012, the first thing I would do to the Bills roster is trade whatever it took to get Atkins from Cincy. So I'm a big Atkins fan. But that was 9 years ago. And I feel like we have plenty of 3-techs, but no real 1-techs outside of Star. So that is where I'd rather focus any DT acquisitions. I've been a big fan of both players, but I'm not really interested in bringing them in as they fall off the cliff. If I had to pick one, I'm more interested in Atkins. But not as excited as I would have been a couple of years ago.

I’m warming up to the JJ Watt idea
DrDawkinstein replied to John from Riverside's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I dont know about that. If this were 2 or 3 years ago, we'd all be saying "He's already made $100M+ with a crappy team. Of course he is going to sign with New England super cheap in order to chase a ring". And then he probably would! We've seen vets do it a number of times. But now WE are that team. So maybe he would want to come here on the cheap. Especially when comparing the tone and culture of the organization with what he is unhappy with in Houston. I dont think it's that far fetched. -

Cutting Addison and Jefferson saves us $12.5M. I need a little of that to put towards OL. So if we can convince Watt to come here to chase a ring with a well-managed organization, at $10M/year, then I'm for it. Won't go higher than $10M tho. -

Maybe your previous post didnt properly convey what you meant, because it reads like you are dismissing these issues as something everyone has to deal with, and therefore isnt a big deal, and that these guys should "suck it up" like everyone else has to. 🤷♂️ -

And it's these types of attitudes that keep perpetuating untreated mental illness as a major problem. -

The demographic most affected by suicide is middle-aged men. And has been for decades. A lot of pressure, not allowed to show emotion, must be "the strong one" for everyone else, and no outlets for dealing with it. -

Great insights, thanks for sharing. And not just that, but lonely, shut out (not allowed in the facility), and no longer "the man". All those years of having folks following you around, telling you how great you are, just disappear. And now no one even wants you around. It's absolutely a difficult transition, and deserves empathy, regardless of how much fame/money they've acquired. -

He always seemed... off, to me. Even in his younger playing days. That big smile was almost too big. Very Robin Williams-esque, where they are over-doing the smiling and laughing to hide the struggles. I was not surprised that he did not handle retirement well. -

It wasnt all CTE. CTE often becomes the convenient excuse/scapegoat because we have such a warped view of mental illness and emotional struggle in this country. These guys would rather blame it on a brain injury than admit they have issues that are not so physical and far more abstract, nuanced, and therefore trickier to treat.
