Brandon Aiyuk officially requests a trade
DrDawkinstein replied to SCBills's topic in The Stadium Wall
Sorry if it wasnt clear, I was mainly talking about paying TWO receivers. They're locked into Deebo for his role in Shanahan's Offense, but I dont see him lasting much longer health-wise. They obviously tried to sign Aiyuk to a big deal, but not as big as the WR market would dictate. I know you have Philly as an example of 2 WRs and a QB getting paid, but we'll see what that does to their team building options going forward. It has already decimated Miami (not that I mind that). -

In their plans "to a limit", and once they hit a certain $ amount, they get too far down that high-priced spectrum that starts hindering other areas. I'm sure they'd all be in their plan at team-friendly rates. But the FO is realistic. We also dont know the length and guaranteed amounts in the 9ers offer. I have to imagine it was more complicated than $27.5M because that is only $5M less than what Pitt signed him at if everything else is equal (4/$110M vs 4/$115M). -

Neither Deebo nor Aiyuk are in the 9ers plan for two years from now, after they have to pay Purdy. At that point, they'll have a couple more WRs on rookie contracts (a la Pearsall) to work through Shanahans offense while they dedicate more of the cap to Purdy, OL, and McCaffery. That's kinda the extreme spectrum NFL teams have to decide on with the WR market. Do they spend a lot of money on known vet WRs? Or draft some cheaper talent to balance out paying other positions? Once you pay your QB you almost have to go that latter, like the Bills have shifted to. Otherwise you end up like Miami with a high paid QB, 2 high paid WRs, no OL and no Defense. Cincy is in this predicament right now with Higgins and even worse so with Chase, and why they drafted Burton.... -
Pic from Hard Knocks: Decode the Giants 2024 Draft Board
DrDawkinstein replied to Big Blitz's topic in The Stadium Wall
All of them had injuries. Red is almost certainly injured/injury concern. -
I was actually surprised in the last episode that they showed how they were targeting the CBs in round 2, and then the players got picked and they had to adjust to their secondary option.

Josh is by far the highest paid employee of the entire Bills organziation. Making about 10x what even McD and Beane make. Josh will likely be a part of the Bills longer than McD, Beane, or anyone else in the FO. I wouldnt fault Pegula IF he wanted Josh to take more of an executive leadership role, even if it ultimately isnt the right move. But probably a conversation he should have directly with Josh, not McD and Beane.

On Goff and Jones... I can see the argument that Goff was a miss. When you consider what the Rams gave in order to move up and get him, and the lack of success they tie directly to him as opposed to his coach, and the fact that they had to move on from him in order to take the next step. From a purely Rams perspective, it was a miss. Maybe still hit the backboard, but it wasnt a pick that settled their QB position for 10+years. On Jones, well, the Giants staff is VERY aware they are on camera and everything they say, do, or show is being recorded. I dont believe anyone in that building expects Jones to be with them next year, but they cant say it. Just like there was NO WAY Schoen was re-signing Barkley, but he still had to go through the song and dance and say the right things to the camera. If they thought Jones really was a hit, they wouldnt have been going through that entire exercise in the first place, nor spend all that time scouting and interviewing QBs. Stroud over Mahomes and Josh (again, on camera) is a smart move for a team that needs to stack talent and Stroud is still on a fresh rookie deal.

A little schadenfreude between fan bases is healthy. Being able to point out, and even laugh at, mistakes like what the Browns did pulls this board out of our laser focused tunnel vision and reminds us that all the other franchises make mistakes here and there as well, sometimes even bigger than our worst mistakes.

John Elway admits Josh Allen was his biggest regret
DrDawkinstein replied to 78thealltimegreat's topic in The Stadium Wall
So in one thread we have some "anonymous NFL exec" saying Josh is overrated and pointing out his flaws. And then John Elway is publicly admitting what an absolute mistake it was to pass on him with a top 5 pick. Yeah, I tend to go with Elway on this. -
It's kinda funny. If folks go back to my first post that started this thread, and even through most of the original pages, it wasnt about Watson being a SAer. It was mostly about how badly the Browns botched this, and laughing at how they handcuffed themselves. Really a contract/cap discussion. Heck, as it pertains to my feelings on Watson, I even gave him some (very small) props... The Broncos signed Wilson the same offseason that the Browns signed Watson. After 2 bad years, the Broncos were able to move on even though they are eating about $100M in dead cap. THAT alone should be the worst contract in the history of the NFL. But the Browns said "hold my beer and watch this". After 2 bad years, if the Browns wanted to move on, it would cost them $200M in dead cap! And if they want to move on next year, it's still $136M in dead cap! And even if he plays out his contract, there is an extra void year that will cost the Browns $9M in dead cap in 2027. That's best case scenario. Just the absolute worst contract ever. At least from the team perspective.

Watson's is definitely worse. Wilson at least had a SB ring, and Denver was able to bite the bullet and move on after 2 years. Big dead money, sure. But still not as big as what is left on Watson's contract. I was never a big Baker believer, or even fan. But leave it to the Browns to somehow find a low road to take and make me cheer for the guy.

Bumping this thread for some more Deshaun Watson hate to revel in this offseason... https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5664252/2024/07/29/cleveland-browns-deshaun-watson-training-camp/? Deshaun Watson is acting like a victim, but he brought this all on himself ...But here’s the part he can control: Flacco arrived and immediately thrived in Kevin Stefanski’s play-action offense. He made it look exactly how it’s supposed to look. There were too many interceptions, yes, but Flacco ran the offense better than Watson. He had so much success in the system that he walked away with the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year based on five games. So what did the Browns do in response? Fired the offensive coordinator and overhauled an offense that was finally thriving because it wasn’t the franchise quarterback who was making it go. It was the retired guy off the pickleball court. Can’t have that. Can’t embarrass the $230 million man like that... ...I believe Watson has gotten some really bad advice through all of this. His team, at least to my knowledge, never hired a crisis management team to begin mitigating the PR damage. He never was out front on any charity work involving women’s abuse victims. Instead, he went to Saudi Arabia over the offseason — a country with a horrific record on human rights and specifically women’s rights — and took to social media to rave about what a good time he had there. Watson’s involvement in numerous lawsuits certainly was a factor in what he could or couldn’t say publicly. But two years later, he still can’t understand why people may not like him? Or understand why the community has been slow to embrace him? Really?...

Dark Horse Candidates and Surprise Cuts
DrDawkinstein replied to Rocky Landing's topic in The Stadium Wall
Isnt Hollins mostly a Special Teams guy? IMO he's here to replace the Taiwan Jones/Tyler Matakevich type guys. Should get very few reps at WR unless things go south with injuries. Should get a ton of work on STs. I think that makes him almost a lock to make the team. We need vet leadership on STs. And just like we carried an "extra" RB with Taiwan Jones, Hollins will be the extra WR (who hopefully never plays WR). edit: So I guess with that being said, Hollins would be my surprise cut -
Players get 48% of shared revenue. From the pie charts I posted upthread, only about half of that 17% Ticket Sales qualifies for shared revenue. Owners get around it via suites and boxes which do not have to go to shared revenue. Neither do seat licenses. All of that goes directly to the owners' pockets. So not only are they keeping the majority of ticket sale revenue, the owners are pocketing over half of the TV revenue as well. But sure, it's the players who are getting their fair share for being the real talent and sacrificing their bodies that are the problem. You get upset because the headline you see is "Jordan Love signs $55M/yr deal" and that sounds like too much to you. The headline you arent seeing though is "Terry Pegula signs $350M/yr deal".
-
Not even tho. Only about $20M of the $255M salary cap comes from shared ticket revenue. Crying about ticket costs and blaming it on players salary is just completely inaccurate. NFL teams could give all their tickets away for free and still have a salary cap of over $200M. That money comes from Fox, CBS, NBC, Amazon, ABC.
-
I get that you're a new poster but maybe read up on how the NFL's economy actually works before you continue to embarrass yourself. Most (all) of your assumptions have been incorrect. The Owners are pricing you out from going to games for their own greed. That QB's salary doesnt come out of their pocket. It comes out of revenue sharing from the NFL based almost solely on TV revenue. That literally is the magic fund for player salaries you speak of. And that $255M salary cap allowance that goes to the players is less than half the revenue. The other half+ goes to the owners. The Owners are making more than the entire team combined. Plus all the stuff that doesnt go into revenue sharing that they get to keep outright.

Tickets have practically nothing to do with the players' salaries. That money comes from TV rights. The bolded could not be more wrong, or incorrectly aimed.

The Allen-Diggs Relationship in Decline?
DrDawkinstein replied to hondo in seattle's topic in The Stadium Wall
Eh, TO never made the playoffs. Diggs was imperative in the creation of Josh Allen. You cant tell the main story of Josh without him. If TO was ever on a team that had success and was as beloved as the current crew, he'd be a bigger fan favorite. It's the winning that is the difference, and Diggs was here for winning. Agreed he wont be a Reed. Until we win a SB, none of the players will be as beloved as the 90s teams.
