Daboll on what went right/wrong
DrDawkinstein replied to foreboding's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Is that the Bills' focus, or the difference in QB personalities/talent? I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that there have been plenty of short/intermediate plays called that Josh himself turned into home run attempts. It is the same offense and playbook Daboll had when he was in New England. It's just a matter of which parts he is using here, and how the players are executing it differently. We absolutely have those same running plays and short yardage pass plays. We've used them before. We just didnt on Sunday. Which is what makes it even more frustrating. -
Daboll on what went right/wrong

This is literally the Patriots offense that they ran for 20 years, won 6 Super Bowls, and built a dynasty with. I dont think the overall scheme of "pass first, use short passes as your running game" is the issue, as much as it was the specific game plan and play calling out of that offense in a single week. The frustrating part is there are huge parts of that scheme which arent 5-wide and which utilize RBs and TEs. He just refused to use it on Sunday, which is a problem. 3 years into this scheme, it should have been fairly easy to adjust to something everyone is familiar with. He simply refused to. -
McDermott, Daboll, Frazier zoom session 9/13
DrDawkinstein replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The play was dead before it was called regardless of how our OL was playing. The big change to have McKenzie out wide and then motion back to the pack, instead of having a TE come across the formation, sabotaged that play. They made that one change, and it results in the DB being brought right to the play and having a perfect view to blow it up. Josh needs to wait to see if the DB follows the WR across the formation, and if not (like they didnt yesterday), audible into a normal run up the middle or a qb sneak. -

The majority of what McD says better be about the horrible coaching job he and his staff put out yesterday. I dont want to hear about 1-on-1 blocking opportunities when you setup the OLine to fail. I'll say it: He called a complete crap game. AND had a complete crap game plan going into the game. -
It feels more like Daboll figured himself out since the entire game plan played right into Pitt's strengths and made it easier for them. Not to take anything away from the Steelers who have a very talented team, but we were our own worst enemy yesterday. Heck, I could DC against that offense yesterday. "Oh, theyre going 5 wide? DL go eat. Everyone else drop back. Done" Ehh. On the contrary, I think Josh could have used some designed runs right from the beginning to help him settle into the game. And it would have also helped keep Pitt honest. First possession, starting on PItt's own 20... If we really are going to use an empty backfield, then they should have ran Josh up the middle on some draws. Give the defense ANY reason to not be settled. I'm not worried about him taking hits if it's just a couple of plays, and they are known designed runs. Get some yards and get down. The scrambles are when I get worried because he's still looking to throw, and guys arent blocking as expected (since it's basically a broken play at that point).

Great write up, @Virgil. Thanks as always. I put this loss squarely and solely on the shoulders of our coaches. Mainly, Dabol and McD. I really dont care about individual player performance this week because the coaches 100% set them up to fail. You simply can NOT have "5-wide" as your base offense. Especially against a Defense like Pittsburgh. Going 5-wide tells the D we are obviously passing. This allows two big things: The DL to tee off at the snap, without having to worry about any reads, and just go straight after the QB. This puts a ton of additional pressure on the OLine, and we saw it result in the Holds that were called (and plenty more that weren't called). The OL was holding on for dear life most of the game. This isnt because they simply suck. It's because the DL had a green light to go 100% pass rush every play. the D to drop 7 into coverage, and into a soft zone. Clogging up every passing lane, and covering every opportunity. Giving Josh NOTHING to work with. He couldnt even "take what the D gives him" because they weren't giving him anything. No need when our plan is so obvious. It was DISASTROUS right from the jump. It was obvious that Dabol had a "first drive script" that was likely planned for starting at our own 25 after a touchback. Instead, McKenzie gifted us great field position and all the momentum... and the OC blew it by refusing to deviate from the plan. Coming out 5-wide all 3 plays and taking a Field Goal pretty much set the weak, disappointing tone for the rest of the day.

For what it's worth, that is almost impossible to enforce proactively. And is really just there in case he ever gets in any more trouble, they can slap him with a trespassing charge as well. May have trouble buying tickets directly from the team, but not sure that is even enforceable (what if it's a common name?). As long as he behaves himself, he can still attend games without issue.

Star is OUT for Steelers game
DrDawkinstein replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Would love it, but doubtful he is still there at #32. If the rest of his season goes like last Saturday, he could be top-10. -
TJ Watt signs mega deal with Steelers
DrDawkinstein replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
In that case, I revise my score prediction. Bills 41 Steelers 3 Watt blocks an extra point. -
Ugh, no, major pass for me. She looks like a fat Vin Diesel.

For what it's worth, Michael Robinson on the show also picked the Bills. Even though he technically wore a Chiefs jersey and picked the Chiefs, he qualified it multiple times with "I am actually picking the Bills but dont want to jinx it and am using reverse psychology". He winced through his whole segment about the Chiefs, and kept talking about the Bills, and at the very end when they pressed him on who he really thought would win he sheepishly said "...Bills". Feels nice to be America's sweetheart for once! -

Team values: Woohoo, we're not last!
DrDawkinstein replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Couple of things. Milwaukee counts in their market, which isnt much bigger than Buffalo but it's not just the Green Bay area that is counted. Heck, they even get some of the Chicago market. Plus, brand value comes into play as well. The history and championships do mean something. It's a big part of what makes the Cowboys the most valuable team, and why Jerry Jones will always volunteer for Hard Knocks (keeping that brand in the spotlight, any spotlight). I mean, the Championship trophy is named after Green Bay's old coach. There is big brand value there compared to the Bills. -

Nope, its all about the market size, TV revenue, and local corporate availability for suites. -
