Interesting ESPN article (re Allen): death of the deep ball
DrDawkinstein replied to TPS's topic in The Stadium Wall
It's not all on Diggs. As a matter of fact, I'd say it's way more on Dorsey to have the plays ready, much like Reid does. Diggs and Kelce will do their job no matter what. But which coach is putting his players in the best position to succeed? -
It is absolutely the combo, the same mentality of never seeing a chance at a deep shot they didnt like, and it being a main part of Dorsey's scheme that if the D gives a certain look pre-snap then you go deep every time. I'm trying to find the article/interview, but the Dolphins said as much after the playoff game. Paraphrasing "We knew that if we lined up a certain way, it would trigger Josh to throw the low percentage deep ball". The problem for the Dolphins is that he connected on 3-4 of them. The Bengals came out the next week and did the same exact thing, but none of them connected. Teams were doing that to us before the Dolphins game too. Opposing teams/defenses absolutely have Dorsey (and Josh) figured out. It's just up to the opposition whether they want to live & die against the deep ball.

The TWolves practice story is amazing. I would love to see Diggs do something similar. For those that dont know, Jimmy Butler showed up late to his first practice back, took himself and the backups vs. The Starters. Guys that werent even going to make the team. AND BEAT THEM. To prove a point to the FO. He EMBARRASSED the starters. And they all love him even more for it.

Can we talk about Gabe Davis's performance?
DrDawkinstein replied to HappyDays's topic in The Stadium Wall
I keep seeing this criticism of our WRs from Sunday's game and I'm not sure I buy it. First, the Jets have an amazing defensive backfield, so maybe guys were well covered. However, I feel like folks are saying this mostly based on the fact Josh wouldn't throw them the ball. But right now, I feel that is more on Josh. I'd also LOVE to see Dorsey ever scheme guys open like Reid does for Kelce and WRs in KC. We have so many mismatches. Why not split Kincaid and/or Cook all the way to the outside to see if you can get a LB on Diggs/Davis inside? Or anything along those lines. -
"Bored" may not be the exact right word, but I get what that guy was saying. Frenetic, uncomfortable, anxious, all play into the same vibe that analyst was trying to get across. He got impatient ("bored") with just 1st downs. He wanted a touchdown and he wanted it immediately. So he took horrible deep shots instead of continuing to check it down and move the chains. It's like he's back there going "Ok, we picked up two 1st downs in a row. That earns me a shot to go deep and get this over with" Bro, just keep picking up 1st down until you're in the red zone!

Good comparison. It was interesting on Thursday Night when the Lions got the ball back before halftime. 34 seconds left, down 14-7. They could have just kneeled it and gone to the locker room. Instead they managed to run 7 plays and get to midfield before stalling and running out of time. But it was pointed out what a deliberate move it was to decide to run real plays instead of just conceding the half. Showed the team that they are going to fight for every inch in every second they were given. The Lions kept fighting and came back and won. We took the soft way, showed the team we could "settle", and allowed the Jets to come back and win.

My exact text from when the FG unit came out: "McD taking his foot off the gas instead of going for the throat. We'll let them hang around all game now" This was right after Rodgers went down and they were at their most vulnerable. A TD there is an absolute dagger. A FG gives them a moral victory to rally around. It's the same lack of cut-throat attitude that keeps us soft in the playoffs. In that situation, yep

Josh Allen since the KC win last season….22 TD’s and 16 INT’s.
DrDawkinstein replied to Beast's topic in The Stadium Wall
Bold is true, but also misleading through omission. "He had 2 INTs and 3 Fumbles for 3 total turnovers" is the most truthful/accurate statement. If all youre talking about is turnovers, sure. But if we're talking about Allen's erratic play and loose ball control, then tell the whole story. -
Are we expecting Punters to be big hitters?

To be fair, fumbles and fumbles lost are 2 different stats. And fact is, he did fumble 3 times. Even if he recovered 2 of them it's still worth mentioning because it does give detail on his ball protection. -
Allen blew the game. Of course. You definitely havent seen me argue otherwise. I dont think many (any) posters are putting it ALL on Dorsey. But there are plenty of issues to go around. Whether he called the deep shots or not. Or it's just his scheme that triggers Josh on certain looks to try those deep shots. Or Dorsey not downshifting into a running game in the 4th. Or for running a shotgun draw on 2nd and 15 in OT.
-
Disagree, in that, he is a lead back in today's NFL. And performed really well the first 3 quarters. But when you want to downshift and grind it out, you put in your secondary back as your "closer". Which we kinda did, but then got cutesy again.

I dont even think the Jets know where they stand right now. Depends on how a lot of other things shake out. Does AR just retire and walk away? Does he force an injury settlement? Does he try to play out his contract?
-
Hey, I have enough Bills fan experience to be able to complain about BOTH independently. Thank you very much! And I also realize that, even with Josh's issues, given the way the League and Contracts are setup, Josh will likely out-live Dorsey, McD, and even Beane on the Bills roster.

Not just a run. A draw. And not just any draw. A shotgun draw. A run that starts 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage, and has the QB turn and hand the ball to a RB who is STANDING STILL.

He has seemingly regressed to 2019/Texans Playoff Josh Allen. He is definitely NOT the same guy that spent his first 3 offseasons totally focused on improving every detail of his game. It's like he did the work to be "good enough", and then dropped it completely, even though he wasnt all the way to the promised land yet. -
I'll fully admit I've been shielding myself from Bills misery this morning by reading Jets boards. They can't even celebrate the win. Pyrrhic victory for sure. They won the battle, but lost the war (season). All those months of hype flushed in an instant. Suck it, Hard Knocks. I believe it's that the Jets now owe the Pack a 2nd instead of a 1st.

It's easier with hindsight, but the idea of firing McD and Frazier after 13 seconds, promoting Dabol, and bringing in say Jim Schwartz as DC sure looks good right now. Similar to the Falcons, when they should have fired Quinn and promoted Shanahan after the Super Bowl loss.

Literally every week since week 7 last year. It was a joke in one of my group texts this morning. "Copy and Paste from last year" "Maybe this is the loss/performance the guys need to wake them up and McD will light a fire under them" It was 12 weeks of it last year, an entire offseason, and now this... It isnt going to happen. There is no waking up or lighting fires with this team. I put that on McD. The OC wont hold him accountable because the OC would make those same decisions. That's the problem.

Cook will not break tackles. He has never been that player. It's actually really surprising seeing so many people upset about that this morning. He's a speed guy. He beats guys to the corner or to the hole. And he did that very well all last night. He will snap off big gains when we get him space like all the space Hall had to run through.
