This is a tough one to call after only one game. TB - 17 Buf - 13. Defensive game, and Buffalo hasn't shown me anything in the red zone. Against the Tampa defense, it's going to look worse. I'm still po'd on the penalty front. Playing in TB's home opener with their crowd will cost some untimely false starts and procedures calls. Bills learn, and beat Atlanta week 3.

But, isn't that exactly what some people are saying? That the federal government was wrong for not anticipating what the state (much less the city) needed a few days ahead of time? -

Still have to do the paperwork. -
Pretty much. But there are a heck of a lot of people here and there that do some pretty good work, for not much pay, horrendous hours and I'm sure they would all get spit on because they are "Bush supporters" if they ever tried to explain anything, even though they may have been doing the same job under Clinton.

OK, go join in and make it right. In terms of scale it IS the best response in history. There is no precedent. And, what do you expect from an administration taking constant heat? Sure, literally hundreds of things went wrong, at many levels. This means nothing went right? My normal area is defense. As far as homeland defense goes, we have to be 100% right 100% of the time, or we're considered a failure. Can you name me any other institution held to that standard? That's what y'all expect, but I doubt very many people hold themselves personally to that type of standard. "The Government" must, though. Hey - news flash...the "government" consists of people like you.

Federal Response - TV versus Reality

No, I always thought that was a really wussy thing to say. I'm also about done beating this horse. I suggest everyone just write in their ideas for improvement to the DHS suggestion box. I'm certain most will be well received. -
Federal Response - TV versus Reality

There are simply thousands of moving parts to all this. I hate to take it in any one direction, but the simple matter is that unless you have all these people sitting in the motor pool ready to go, you can't get there is 48 hours. We are talking a response in force. Assets were in the area within hours of the storm passing, before the levees gave way. Not assets to evacuate 20,000 people from a flooded football stadium. As hard as it seems to accept and understand, you just don't load a thousand guys up, point them south and say "go forth and do well". That will result in a cluster-fugg of biblical proportions in it's own right. There are lines and chains of authorities, by law that have to be dealt with. Don't like it? Get the law changed. All government entities have to work within the law, and within their lines of authority. I could probably write a book here, or at least a chapter or two. Things do NOT happen in real life like they do on TV. People are only capable of so much, and it's unrealistic and unreasonable to be expected to plan out every possible contingency in every town in America. What do you expect the Coast Guard to do, send every flyable SAR bird to LA? What about the fishing boat off New England that sends out a distress call? Screw him, he's not on TV? Think this stuff through. It's not the normal mission of Title 10 (active duty) military forces to run out and save the town. Though in some cases there are very specialized units earmarked for civil support, all the "heavy lifting" required simply took time to set up, and these people did and are doing a remarkable job. You don't want to understand it? You want to imply something with Palm Beach? You have a vote. Vote in everytime you get a chance whoever you think will meet your expectations. Be sure to vote for the tax increases required to "be ready" to your standards to the tune of the billions it would require, for something that may or may not happen. Like I said, lots and lots and lots of moving pieces. None of this happens in the snap of someone's fingers. "Make it so" sounds great on Star Trek, but takes a lot of time, people and effort to coordinate in this century. I'm really curious for you, 1Bills - or anyone else to explain what your plan and response would have been, had you been in charge? Maybe we can all learn something here. How would you have evacuated New Orleans while simultaneously addressing the needs of an area the size of Great Britain in your 48 hours or less scenario? -

I've tried really, really hard...but I can't help it. You haven't a clue. Not one. I hope your football acumen is more evolved than your understanding about the country or the world. -
Whatever you think of my blowhard ass, I have been at this a long time. Back in the late 70's and early 80's, we still had the "Cold War". I taught NBC Defense to the military, and also taught a thing called Shelter Management for what was once called Civil Defense, and at the time was called Civil Preparedness to certain local civilians.. There used to be a system where places in every metropolitan area were pre-stocked with everything from rations and water and medicine, to radiation monitors. There were plans laid out not necessarily where people would automatically go, but more as to how many a shelter could hold for as much as a month, without any outside support. Local leadership, not just government, but business people used to being in charge were trained in at least the basics of managing a shelter situation over an extended period. I wonder if maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to relook those old programs.

I agree. From what I've seen, that covers 7 out of 10 Congress people. Outside of maybe 15% of them, they are the wannabe's, and think they are really something. Try having a drink with one. You'll want to puke inside of 20 minutes. -

I don't know...you can throw up just about anywhere. -
Well, probably about time for this stupid unenlightened Bush loving circle jerk to end. I had hoped that maybe a few here would listen to some of what was being said, and maybe look some stuff up. Not here, nor elsewhere. I am a blind Bush supporter because I didn't say right off people didn't eat for 4 days because he hates black people. We must all vote democrat forever more. Isn't that what this is all about? I'm not even being political in that, other than I think it's disgusting. If this was on Clinton's watch, I doubt my comments as to the events would be any different - except probably or possibly for the press coverage. I can't say where they would have gone, but I have a feeling it may have been more of a fair shake. Dubbya isn't Bill, and "I feel your pain" through those cocker spaniel eyes goes much further on TV. Just different people, doesn't mean they are better than one another.

Eat shidt and choke. I care about no one. -
Careful, we might offend someone. Once again, flame on folks. You want to make it a race issue? Go for it. I actually have a lot more respect for the arguments from both sides against creating pockets of welfare societies. You had a big one in New Orleans, unfortunately it was in a place that got whipped in a worse case by a terrible event. Call me racist? OK, have at it. I'm not. But that's OK. It's not about "poor" people, either. It's about an entire created demographic looking for someone else to take care of them. Yes, they are predominantly black in this case, but 60 years ago, they were white Appalachians. It's a demographic that our system created, and has perpetuated. They expect to be taken care of, and we are still fostering that. I can't blame them, from that regard, after a few generations. I would not expect them to think anything else. No surprise to me they feel let down.

It's interesting how so many can take an issue, and basically go black and white with it. No shades of grey. No nuances or subtleties, and make it a temporary cause celebre until next week, or maybe the week after. A month from now, those not extremely dedicated to a narrow course of action are not going to care, and those of us who are are not the few and far between who do, , whatever side, are the "Hot Pockets" representatives. "Ding" Hot pockets is not old, nor is it a joke. It's mentioned how our long term future may be predicated through actions taken now, but I've long had a long term feeling that many of us don't see past last week. My opinion, but I have one, and you can't take it away from me. I don't know the in's and out's of law. Don't know that I want to, but I have heard from people on both sides discussing that he ain't a bad choice. All you guys REALLY concerned with women's rights abortion issues raise your hands. I thought so. -

"I'll admit I have no idea of what I'm talking about as I give my uninformed, TV driven opinion. That makes me balanced, and credible.." OK, I interpreted. Tell me where I'm wrong? You have a future in American popular media, 1billsfan, if you're not, you have a calling. You should really pursue this. You have a true future here. I shouldn't even address this, but sometimes people really get me to shaking my head. In fairness, no one is explaining a lot of this, and it takes a lot more than most people are willing to read or listen to to do so. Still, it's not as easy as you think. -
What's really funny is that some of us geezers are still nailing your high school girlfriends. I picked that up from Kirk. Picard is still making hand gestures towards a blue screen and getting a woody over the best boy. Made a lousy Ahab, too.

Harrumph. (spit) You know when I was a lad, we used to have to walk barefoot for three miles just to get to an episode of Lost. We did it without a remote, too. If we had a copy of a Victoria's Secret catalogue, or a WSJ oped, we considered ourselves lucky and we shared. Spoiled youngun's. Bah.
