Bingo. When the NFL ceased to be about the game, and became the consumer draw a player like that is worth a lot of money. Geeze, an example might be...Buffalo? Toss a few million at him and you make 3 times as much back even if he's a bust. If he succeeds, it's a gold mine.
-
Damn, if guys like that are already figured to be a bust, how the frig did we end up with Losman? What were the scouts thinking? I don't recall ever seeing any kind of film on ole JP that even compares to that kind of a performance.

Hey Scraps, how they hangin'? Haven't seen you for a while. Let me go back and read the thread, so I can attack and pick on you. From what little I did read, I'd be inclined to pick on everybody, though. But, my ideas are different. I've yet to gain or understand PPP perspective about much of anything.

Yup, White's stock went up as well. Hell of a game. Had USC won, he would/should have been MVP. Now he can exchange XMAS cards with Thurman Thomas.
-
Don't forget, it wasn't just Young, either. Texas wanted that game more, and USC expected to win. Young wouldn't have had a 50 yard field if the Texas D hadn't stepped up big time in the crunch. All in all, one of the best College bowl games I've seen in a long, long time. Appreciated the entertainment. Especially after having to flick back and forth between Bills games and the History or Cooking channel for the last few months just to keep my adrenalin up.

I've thought that more than a few times. Seeing MM and JG going "where the fu** did all these Indians come from?" on the sidelines reminded me of Custer and Reno.

I think he worked with what he was given. I was caught up in the game, and didn't "analyze", but I had the feeling that USC didn't have a lot of respect for the Texas running game (except for no. 10) and played a lot of 5-6 DB figuring that Texas would have to get into a shoot out to keep up. That left a lot of room once the initial 3-4 man rush went by (picked up nicely all night, by the Texas O-line, Kudos to USC's too). Pretty obvious, and nothing to really audible into or out of. Often, the receivers were WELL covered, and Young took the soft center of the deployed defense and went at it. Then, add in the size and talent - he generally only had to make one guy miss, and he did. Then, more than once he ran right over the top of the "spy". No, you'd never see that in a pro game, but mentally - the guy has the tools as well as the talent. Leinhart looked lost for a while, Young never did once, that I could tell. Hate to make the comparison, but look at our "scrambling" QB and his mental work vs. what we watched last night. There's more to being a scrambling QB than an ability to run. Keep in mind, the guy had 200 yards rushing - but he also completed a LOT of passes into very good coverage. Before he ran, he checked off at least three receivers, sometimes four except for a very few times where he had the pressure. Key thing - no sacks, no Ints. I, for one, was impressed.

True, but I'm not adverse to a "no name", as a coordinator - providing he meets the requirements of understanding not just the game, but the tools at hand. As has been beat to death, don't force the players you have to play away from the strengths that got them there. This could sound dumb, but I don't see much difference between gameplanning a football game and coaching players vs. designing a military operation and training soldiers. One is usually more successful in designing an operation maximizing the talents and tools of their own forces while exploiting the weaknesses of the opponent. Intelligence (scouting and film) when properly analyzed give you those weaknesses and allow one to "deploy" forces against a particular threat. And you use the forces you have best suited to that part of the mission, taking advantage of their best capabilities. And, the "unexpected" (not "tricky") can go a long way to accomplishing a goal. Of course it helps to have the second marines, or the 82nd airborne - but "average" units, properly utilized have won many a battle (NE Patriots?). Improperly utilized units (Custer and the 7th Cav?) have looked a lot more like the Bills.

I meant to say, 3-4.

I'd be interested to see who might be floating around out there that might be matched to the talent we have, and be looking for a shot. I'm probably wrong, but I'm thinking certain coordinators excel with particular styles, and are average in the others, and come on like gangbusters when the personnel match the style. Example, is Clements a better man to man defender? Or is he better in some weird cover two playing 10 yards off a receiver? With what's on board now, and possible off season pickups, would the Bills be better off going to a 4-3? Mechanics can work on any car, but someone who has worked on Chevies for 20 years will do a better job on another Chevy, than starting new on a Ford.

Easy Son, I have the utmost respect for both. Just joking around. It's well past the point of taking any of this seriously.

I'd be afraid to mess around with the one aspect of the Bills game that worked this year.

Nothing like having the National Championship game as your own personal highlight reel. I say again, Holy Crap! Sadly, the bickering has long since begun over too many calls going Texas's way, but that still doesn't diminish this guys performance, and presence. He just refused to lose, and very importantly, it rubbed off on the rest of the team. Can't get the player, but it would be nice if some of his attitude could get bottled and shipped to Buffalo.

My, but this next draft is bound to be entertaining.

When you're 87, "big changes" involve prune instead of apple. Sometimes, Depends. So, let's see what we get for coordinators. What's done is done, and it's about what a lot of us expected.

That's the most intuitive post I've seen out of you in a couple years. You must be really upset? -
Quiet, the intensity is building! People will sat glued to ESPN non stop 24/7 until it is resolved! AH! The conspiracy rears it's ugly head...the Comeback Game was on, today. Coincedence? I think not. NFL films Sabol will be the next HC. They make things look really cool with slow motion. Thats the secret.

Why do you make this so easy? Fellas, anyone want this one? Tipped pass, here.
