  1. I think it goes something like this: Newsweek is accountable only to its readers. The government is acountable to you and me. I don't read Newsweek. But wasn't something like this inevitable? If it wasn't Newsweek, don't you think there would have been some other justification. I tend to think that people would have gotten killed anyway, because there are people organizing these type of things that are looking for trigger events to incite violence. The fact it was Newsweek, apart from being poor journalism, is, I think indifferent to the total state of affairs.
  2. This story is totally insensitive to lions, which are rightly called the king of the jungle and are noble animals. the midgets got what they deserved.
  3. I Think there was one senator from Tennesee I think that read out whiskey recipes, and from his wife's cookbook.
  4. none of our rights were threatened by Saddam Hussein We had the bastard contained. This war was volitional. And I can't think any right I have that is more secure now than 5 years ago. I think that if anything, our civil rights have been threatened because of this war.
  5. My bad. 3/5ths comment is racially loaded, not my intention. I am going to disagree with any idea to disenfranchise 90% of voters. Of course that was inevitable, as I believe that there should be no standing army. Afghanistan I believe was a justifiable war, but to claim that the whole iraq thing is protecting the "herd's" rights is wrongminded. Our soldiers in Iraq are protecting and dying for our Geopolitical Interests not our rights.
  6. never read starship Troopers. Only Locke, Jefferson, Montesque, and Federalist Papers, and the Misouri Compromise... How about giving the non-veterans at least 3/5 of a vote?
  7. You can have it, just please don't call it democracy or America. Congratulations: you have just created the militaristic state. Tojo would be proud. Militarism is an ideology which claims that military strength is the source of all security, and that the military represents the forward direction of the society as a whole, as it expands into the world, asserting its influence. Militarism asserts that civilian populations are dependent upon (and thereby must be subservient to) the needs and goals of its military. While military preparedness may refer to agreeable and practical matters related to defense, "militarism" connotes the more broad doctrinal views which claim the notion of "peace through strength" as supreme among the interests of society — overriding all others, including diplomacy and issues related to social welfare.
  8. Revised Syllogism Democracy is government by the people Veterans protect government by the people Veterans are the only people
  9. The anorexic crack-whores look was so 90's. We need a crystal meth trailer lab pundit look for the new millenium. I think it could be Peggy Noonan with a little work.
  10. Failed Syllogism of the day: Democracy is universal sufferage Veterans protect universal sufferage Only veterans should have sufferage
  11. There should be no standing army. The spirit of this country is totally adverse to a large military force." --Thomas Jefferson to Chandler Price, 1807.
  12. The cube root of 19 is my college grade point average. Coincidence? I think not. Damn you TD.
  13. That's right, how can we let Bush do this?!!! (tongue firmly in cheek) His duty as president is that "he shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate." Now if you are a constitutional constructionist you have to admit that the framers never meant a majority of the senate, or they would have put that language in the constitution. As far as I know he has had neither the Advice nor Consent of the Senate in chosing some of these nominees. The suggestion that it is the minority shutting down government is a bit like blaming the customer for the selection on the menu when the customer had no choice. The President is not above dialogue with the Senate in this matter, and the Senate has no constitutional imperative to vote on a nominee as some have suggested. If the President wants to play hardball, he can make any appointment he wants during the summer recess but these are temporary appointments.
  14. no. somebody with frequent flier miles should send this person to Vegas or Something. Bills Fans need to support their bretheren when it gets bad like this.
  15. 60 votes are needed to end a filibuster and force a confirmation vote. Republicans need just 5 minority votes to end a filibuster. Roll logs, talk to them, compromise, get them laid, anything.... Ending the filibuster rule would make 51 an unobstructed majority.. or even 50 with a vice-presidential vote. The nuclear option would make the minority party irrelevant not just now, but when Republicans are a minority again. I think the idea is bad.
  16. sancta merda, gravitas sum. Gaul est, latin non est.
  17. Here is my attempt: the idea that a minority party is holding the majority party hostage is laughable. There isn't even enough strength in the Democratic party to even provide a reasonable check on majority power. The GOP needs to start looking at itself if it is talking failure of legislative initiatives, they control all three checks in federal government. They can do what ever they want. The trouble is, when you can make the laws, if it is too radical, then there is not enough political cover when legislation is totally transparent. If things get hard blame the minority.... (sigh). Put more correctly, they are not capable of EVEN this. I never supported Clinton, but the GOP has gotten more milage out of partisan rancor against him that continuing to blame the Dems for all that is wrong has become political cowardice, or at best it is only entertaining to your average Rush Limbaugh listener.
  18. Sounds better than the Burton. Too many Pittsburgh fans.
  19. TD drove him away from this board, and has kept his sexy avatar off the milk-cartons.
  20. I'm going to wait on this one. The one with Burt is one of my all-time favorites. I just can't imagine Adam Sandler improving upon it. Let us know what you think.
  21. I tend to drink Molson Canadian. Labatt Blue Light after meals. But by far the best marketing campaign was for Shaeffer Beer. Sing Everyone: "Shaeffer is the beer to have, if your having more than one."
  22. A big problem is with the Republicans in charge of every commitee, there is no way for a democrat to get anything out of commitee to the floor. So you have Tom Delay saying that they have no ideas, and are standing in the way. For my money, even if they are standing in the way, it is worth it. Note: bankruptcy bill appointments such as bolton privitizing social security clear skies initiatives (pollution licences) etc. The real question is why have the republicans refused to stick to a fiscally conservative agenda when there is so little to stand in their way. I think the answer is that power corrupts
  23. You can't trivialize that kind of loss. Sorry to hear it. I had a great dog for 15 years so I hear what your saying, brother.
  24. least favorite beer is the one that someone started to puke in and then just kinda dribbled in, just that little bit a vomit, and then you accidently drink some of it just because you thought the glass was yours.....but wait.....i still like that more than Bud, so it is a tough question.
