Aerial America/NY Smithsonian channel 2PM Today
Greybeard replied to Greybeard's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Just in case anyone missed the notice. -
I had a link in the topic on the Niagara River which had a short aerial view of the falls area. The full video of New York will be on Monday at 2PM on the Smithsonian channel. I believe they are covering all the states, so if you want to see the aerial view of some other state, check your program guide. I have seen the New York one before and it is well worth the viewing. I don't know much about the Hudson River view but found that informative. If I remember correctly it covers all the area on both the Erie and Ontario lakefronts.

I have this in a folder full of favorite old songs that I go through every once in a while. I did not know that they singer is from Buffalo. The song did stick in my memory though.

There was also a band called the Druids that had a local hit. I think it was Doctor Friend. I think I found it Napster years ago. The vocals were rather The Who like. Either the Druids or the Tweeds opened for either the Spoonful or The Who at Melody Fair. Memories of which seem to be fading.

EJ Manuel: What went wrong after year 1?

Just think how many QB's the Bills have had over the last 20 years you could say that about. Then think of the line they had in front of them. -
So I put in an offer on a house today
Greybeard replied to Kirby Jackson's topic in Off the Wall Archives
No. We put an offer on a house in LIverpool in Sept but after the inspection we backed out. Probably needed a roof in 3 years and definitely needed chimney work now. That was just the big items. -

We had a leek in a rented storage unit and when we told the operator of the unit he said he would fix it with "Through the Roof." He said it was the best product he had ever used for fixing leeks. Maybe you bought the house that failed our inspection. Is it in Liverpool? -
Absolutely WORST Christmas specials

I had forgotten the incident. In the mid 70's she was quite popular. -
I've heard you have to put your phone on Panorama to get a pic of it,

When I was a kid, 10 to 13, my father would take me to Pittsburgh to catch a Dodger/Pirate series. I was a big Dodger fan and my favorite player was Don Drysdale, mainly because we shared birthdays. Every year I would try to get autographs. Maybe because the Dodgers were the away team, it was difficult to get some of theirs. Although I did manage to get a lot of Pirates including Roberto Clemente. So maybe it was the third or fourth year, we stayed at the same hotel as the Dodgers. Well we go to the first game sitting down 3rd base side of the field and Don Drysdale is walking down the outfield from right field, stopping and signing autographs one after another. My father said "go down and get his autograph." In my typically pessimistic manner I said he would be gone by the time I got down there, and anyway we were going to two more games. The next morning while eating breakfast, my father excused himself and walked somewhere behind me. About a minute later he came back with Don Drysdale. He sat down and talked to me for about 10 minutes. Odd I can't remember a single word either of us said except that he said was looking for me at the ballpark, As it turns out, earlier in the year, my father wrote him a letter saying he never signed autographs and we would be in Pittsburgh again this year. I was always amazed that Drysdale actually received the letter and read it. I was even more amazed that my father would do that for me and I never thought of my father the same after that.

If you are not an expert at all things Houses, get a house inspection. It can be money very well spent. -

There are several different versions of this quote. I was looking for one from a roman politician but did not find it but this one has the same theme. “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the Public Treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits from the Public Treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy always followed by dictatorship.”Alexander Fraser Tyler, “The Decline and Fall of the Athenian Republic” There is no real difference between the R's and the D's. One is a Mugger and one is a Thief. One steals your money, the other beats you, and then steals your money. I am not sure which party is which though. Either way, they will get your money. There is only one way this will end. The government will either be overthrown or will declare bankruptcy. Eventually the can cannot be kicked down the road any longer. “Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.” Mark Twain https://jim.com/liberquo.htm A good collection of quotes. When I saw the above I thought of you.

An interesting document on the Niagara River
Greybeard replied to Greybeard's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I just went back to read the newspaper article to see if they said where the canal was going. I lived about 300-400 yards from the NT-Wheatfield border. We thought the canal was a sure thing when they moved the 3 houses down the street that were closest to the border. This was a good thing for my friend and I as the basements were left open. They filled with water and we spent endless hours putting snakes and field mice into the flooded basements. -

They mentioned it in the Niagara Falls:Fatal Attraction Documentary. As a side story, my uncle lived just down stream from the Sandy Beach Yacht Club which is on Grand Island. In the 60's before the ice boom was put across the mouth of the river, it was common to get huge ice flows coming down in the spring. One early spring weekend morning he was out looking at the river when he heard a loud "crack." He looked toward the sound and it was the T portion of the Sandy Beach dock, which was further out in the river, so the T was parallel to the shore, buckling up. It was a rather large dock. He always described it as folding like an accordion. The boom was installed in 1964, much to the joy of the people who had docks on the Niagara. It was a common occurrence to have dock damage every spring. -

Here are some more video's you might be interested in, although they cover Niagara Falls more than the river. A PBS documentary. https://www.pbs.org/video/wned-tv-documentaries-niagara-falls/ Some impressive views of the falls. Only 2 min long. The full vid is on NYState and will be on the Smithsonian channel the end of December. I have seen it before and it is really interesting. Very good quality video. https://www.smithsonianchannel.com/videos/niagara-falls/14388 I have Niagara Falls:Fatal Attraction on my DVR. It covers a good bit about the Falls, the collapses, the over the falls attempts and the water shutdown. etc. I could not find a link but I am guessing some of these might also be video's at your local library. I see I missed the first 6 minutes so I will have to try our local library to see if they have anything. Sounds like it is narrated by the guy who does "How it's Made." I recorded it off a cable channel "Destination America HD." My cable supplier, Spectrum, doesn't offer that channel anymore. You might also wonder what Buffalo would be like today since it was a major benefactor of the early power. I believe that was one of the attractions when Buffalo hosted the World's Fair. -
But it sounded good at the time.

I liked the Naked version better. That always surprised me because I was really into the "Wall of Sound" with the girl groups of the early 60's.

An interesting document on the Niagara River
Greybeard replied to Greybeard's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Beginning in 1918, water was diverted from the Niagara River through the New York State Barge Canal, mainly for navigation purposes. This water, between 700 and 1,000 cfs, is diverted from the river at Tonawanda, New York and returned to Lake Ontario via the Oswego and Genesee Rivers and the Oak Orchard and Eighteen Mile Creeks, in New York State. Hard to believe the water going into the canal at the Tonawanda's is coming out in the above rivers. It did not occur to me that the water was flowing into the Canal. I live 200 feet from the Oswego River and it is a long way from the Tonawanda canal entrance. I'm also impressed with some of the elevation drops in the river. 50+ ft in a couple of places. -
https://www.lre.usace.army.mil/Missions/Great-Lakes-Information/Outflows/Discharge-Measurements/Niagara-River/ I find the info in here interesting. It also covers the history of modifications to the river.

Saw Richard Thompson in concert today
Greybeard replied to The Poojer's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I was having one of those Youtube nights, looking mostly for Sandy Denny video's when I came across this. Should be of interest to all you Richard and Linda Thompson fans. At 2:21 there is a poster of the chronicles of Fairport. The members certainly played in a large number of bands. I would really like to get a copy of that. I don't think I could come up with a band that had more members pass through that were really talented.
