nice analogy! let me take it a step further. one college student (American auto industry) takes no pride in going to college. gets by on barely passing grades, and doesnt plan for the future as graduation closes in and takes time off after graduation to "recharge". this student also wastes money partying every day. another student (Japanese auto industry) gets 4.0's, studies their butt off and plans for the future by being over prepared for the next step as graduation closes in. this student applies for jobs before graduation and lands a job before exiting school. this job isnt just about the pay, but is because it's something this student respects and takes pride in doing. this student doesnt waste money on items it deems unneccessary.
