Professional Sports on the Rise and Fall

Yeah, it's so fracking easy that we lost a Super Bowl because of it. -

Actually no, but I was captain of my college hockey team if that means anything? But I played soccer too and I realize that it's the hardest sport to play competively. What's you argument for baseball? basketball? Hell, even half of the positions in the NFL. You can single out every sport and say this or that isn't like it is in this sport, but to throw a blanket over soccer and to dismiss it as a sport for pussies is just ignorant. In soccer, like hockey, you don't need good hand-eye coordination, you need good everything coordination. Hands, feet, head, you name it. I'm just going to throw a blanket around football players and say they are all one dimensional. Runnings back run, wide receivers catch, quaterbacks throw and blockers are just fat pieces of turd. That's about as true as your statements on soccer but hell, why not say it to be a "manly" man. As for being powerful, I'd like to see you run past a sweeper or stopper without a ball let alone with one. I'd like to see you shoot a soccer ball over 80 to 90 mph like the pros can. If you really want hand-eye coordination: try being a goatlender who has to stop that fast of shot in a net that's 15x the size of him. Explosive speed? Talk to players like Lionel Messi or USA's Landon Donovan to a lesser extent. Messi will run a 4.4 forty with a ball at his feet and three defenders around him. But I'm just wasting my time here. You clearly never watched soccer so what's the point in arguing with someone as ignorant as you. -

The above statement clearly proves you are extremely ignorant ... or maybe completely stupid. Hopefully for you it's the first. Man, I take my ignorant and stupid statement back. You are clearly brainwashed. I heard NFL players are close to finding an alternative fuel source, cures for various cancers and a way to have peace in the Middle East. Something only the NFL and American football players can do. Screw every other sport, the NFL is the only one where players actually want to win. -
The results of a Bills' Super Bowl victory.....
PTS replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I know this is just crazy talk but I truly believe the Bills and Sabres will win championships together one year in hopefully the near future. One will break the curse and the other will follow suit. When that happens we get to rebuild downtown from scratch because there will be nothing left after the city gets burned down to the ground a la the Brits in the War of 1812. With a little luck, the politicians also go down in flames and global warming continues to spread making Buffalo a very diserable place to live. -

Blah blah blah to your argument. The fact of the matter is soccer is bigger here than it was 30 years ago, it's bigger than it was five years ago and it will be even bigger five years from now. If you don't think so, you're just being ignorant. Now that doesn't mean soccer will continue to grow at the expense of other sports. It doesn't have to be a Top 4 sport to be successful. Some might say it's already being successful. The problem with soccer in the past was what I'll call the Americanizing of soccer. It's already a beautiful game but people here tried to tinker with it and its rules to appease the American masses. It failed big time because they only alienated the sport's real fans ... which by the way marketing companies now say are one of the best groups, along with hockey fans, to spend advertising dollars on. Thankfully, the MLS and US Soccer Federation are doing things the right way now. It has been an uphill battle but since starting the league post World Cup 94, the league is just inches away from profitability. In fact, I believe just about every team with a soccer specific stadium turned profits last year. Within the next two seasons, I believe every team in the league will have their own dedicated stadium which helps financially and on TV. I could go on and on with all the great things that happened to soccer in the USA over the past 10 years. Like I said before, it doesn't have to be a Top 4 sport to be widely successful here, although I imagine one day it might be considered a Top 5 sport. -
Who in the hell do the Bills think they are??!
PTS replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bottomline is nobody -- no one from Mel Kipper to the people that read these boards to the Bills brass -- really know what kind of players draft picks will turn into. That being said, I think they had a real good draft. Picks 1 and 2 were dead on and three could be a steal if the player is motivated. As for the rounds 4 thru 7, it's a crapshoot for every team. Complaining about a sixth round pick is crazy. Outside of the Bills top two picks, watch out for Stevie Johnson. The kid has the hands and feet to be a regular contributor sooner rather than later. He might be the Bills biggest steal of the draft. We'll have to wait two years to find out though! -
GCC = Good for WNY

Remember when it would take months to beat games? What happened? Why are all these new games beatable within three hours. As for NES games... 1. Legend of Zelda 2. Super Mario Brothers 1, 2 and 3 3. Bionic Commando 4. Mike Tyson's Punchout 5. Ice Hockey

Ditto. The sooner we get rid of JP the better. The guy won't be in the league within two years.

About a year ago, I watched a National Geographic HD show on the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Long story short, one of the Haitian street sellers that crosses over to the DR on a daily basis had a Bills Super Bowl Championship t-shirt on. I had to do a double take on the DVR, and sure enough, the Bills won Super Bowl 28. All these years I thought we lost that one as well.

Battlestar Galatica - Season 4 starts Friday

BSG is by far the best show on TV, regardless if you like scifi. Anyway, can someone explain how Tigh could be a cylon? Hasn't he been with Adama since the first war? It makes no sense. Tigh was my favorite character on that show. -
As much as 9 out of 10 men would love to see her in PB. It won't happen. They're filthy rich. PB is for washed-up stars like Britney.

A poster on BigSoccer.com said it best. "The beta test for the MLS is over. It's a new era."
-
They haven't won jack squat since Becks joined them. I watched a whole special on Becks during the World Cup about how much money he and Real were making from him globally. He truely put them way over the top.

ESPN Deportes is reporting that reports out of Spain say Ronaldo will be moving to the MLS next week as well. New York Red Bulls as the obvious destination.

Baseball is infinitely more popular than soccer ONLY in America. How many A-Rod jerseys do kids in Africa, Asia and the Americas have? Maybe 1/1000th of the Beckham jerseys you'll see. $50 million to get Beckham is a bargain. They'll make that money ten-fold if it pans out arounding to plan. Real Madrid became the most profitable sports team in the world because of Beckham. This is a big move for US Soccer but they can't stop here. Hopefully Ronaldo follows as is rumored.

Fan balloting is a crime that should be abolished in all sports. When fans vote ... this can happen.
-
I'll echo some of the others' thoughts ... RUN to the store to get the first two seasons. It's THAT good.
-
I agree with most of your post (I'd give the ball to A-Train on 4-and-1) except for the last part. If they control JP's progress well enough to minimize his mistakes, they can contend for the wild card this season. I think the defense will be more than good enough and the special teams is already the best. If the offense can play well for most of the game, they can win against any team they play.

I think's its definitely fair to say that all the tick tack calls went against Buffalo and only Buffalo. New England also got away with some blatant penalties (holding, offsides, lining up in or past the neutral zone, etc). However I hate to blame the refs for this game. Simply put, we could have won despite the poor calls if we did our job. That's why I loved the Sabres this past season. It seemed like every time they were getting jobbed by the refs, they just played harder and harder to win. Any time you don't close the door on NE in NE, you're asking for some officiating bull to happen late in the game. It ALWAYS does in Foxboro.

One game and some of you are calling
PTS replied to Like A Mofo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't know about everyone else but I'm calling for giving A-Train the ball on every 4th and short situation. -
You're kidding right? Just about every hockey fan I know lists Toronto's and/or Montreal's jerseys as two of the best in the league. Toronto's jersey is my personal favorite followed by the Flyers and these are two teams I absolutely hate. Personally, I love all the traditional looking jerseys ... Islanders, Flyers, Oilers. These jerseys echo tradition and excellence. The Coyotes did a great job with their new uniform as well. Bring back the Sabres old logo and modernizing the colors would have been just what the doctored order. Then you make your alternate jersey "more modern" ie Rangers third jersey.

In my best Sparo impression... "But why the rum!?"

I am extremely disappointed and extremely pleased with what I saw yesterday, if that makes any sense. The first half of football proved that this team is much improved and could challenge NE for first in the AFC East. The way they came out to start the second half only futher solified my beliefs that this team has made a complete 180. As for the 4th and One. I absolutely said go for it and I'm glad they did however I disagree with not using a faster developing play and certainly disagree with giving McGahee the ball in that situation. I'd give it to A-Train first or let JP sneak. What happened after that play is what has me very disappointed. It looked like the old Bills that just collapsed on themselves and second guessed everything. All in all, I like where this team is heading, I like what I saw out of the coaching staff and out of JP for the first half and the first drive of the second half. I think if we played just about any other team in the league, we'd be 1-0. You can't give the Pats a chance to comeback -- at Foxboro none the less where you'd going to take it from behind with these tick-tack calls.
