I think you are on to something there, simply based on Drew's stationary point in the pocket. Plus MW takes alot of flack by fans (including Peter King) for errors/ sacks given up that weren't even his responsibility. This in addition to the errors that ARE his responsibility which is bad enough. Bottom line, he has not reached potential, but hindsight critique of a GM's decision on a unanimously highly rated player does not hold much water.
Please. If MW was anything but an overpaid sack of stevestojan, we wouldn't even be having this discussion, would we?
McKinnie was a LT, not a fat RT, a LT who did not allow a sack in college football. He was the right choice. TD screwed up, as he did with virtually every single pick he ever made after his first season.
Defend his record as you will.

Make mine a decisive vote for Bryson.
We got a 4th round pick for him as I recall. Can we get that for Henry?
-
I think that would be a good start to the Willis era at RB.
I think you are going to see a much different team in 2005 with Willis and J.P in there instead of the Dump Truck and Bledsoe.
I could see us averaging in the mid 20's in points per game next year which would be good enough to win with the defense we have. We need to add some lineman though to help Willis and J.P next year. J.P however is more apt to take off running when the blocking breaks down so we would see more positive plays which disguises the poor line play sometimes.
150 yards would be great, because that would indicate keeping Travis Gump off of the football field.
After he gave up on that INT return, I question the health of MaGahee. That said, if he is healthy, there is no reason that I can think of to allow Gump onto the field, except of course to spell our starting RB, Willis MaGahee.

AD, to give credit where it is due, SDS was never too impressed with him.

For me, it was right after the Texans home game last year. At that point, I had had enough and was beginning to see what Spiked Lemonade and the various Patsies trolls were telling us.
Now I suppose I've joined the Dead Horse Beaters Club. They may be annoying as hell, but at least they're right...
Have you cancelled your membership yet in the "Travis Henry is a Top 5 Back, and Worth a First Round Pick Club?

AKC, your post was great. No surprise there. I would like to answer it in 2 ways...first by the topic, then about the team:
1) Being a Bills fan is an identity imo. Bills fans are hard core. I am convinced (however right or wrong) that we are different. Look at this board.....I have been awake at late hours concerned, and praying for other posters. In my hours of need, I was here seeking support.
Not only that, I came and announced good news, such as my retirement and my daughter being accepted into an Ivy League college. There was always good will. Bills fans are a different breed.
I could walk around this neck of the woods with a jest, or any other t-shirt. Big effing deal. The Bills are the only NY team, and if the jests come back, :I starred in Brokeback Mountain: !
It would take up too much bandwith to extoll the virtues of the posters I have met on TBD. All I WILL say is it is nothing short of an honor and complete pleasure to be with you people, and I simply cannot wait until Sunday to do it again.
2) Actually, Bledsoe played his worst game of 04 last Sunday, thus the extra grief. That said, I think Drew has taken too many hits, courtesy of the Bills neglecting the OL and playing weak football for 10 years.
I want Drew to win. I am a fan of his, and his passes. The sad truth is that there is no reason to believe that he is not gun shy at this point. Did you watch Jennings in the jest game? It gets no worse. Big Mike is a worthless piece of stevestojan. We have no true center, and our LG sucks. Drew has taken 125 brutal sacks in 2 1/2 years. Honestly, how much is too much?
I think what bothers me are those who think that JP (a top 5 pick) will come in and be the latest messiah, ala McNally. The kid looked good in preseason, but MW doesn't care about protecting his young ass any more than he cares about protecting Drew.
TD did this. He drafted this pos, and Reed and traded up for Denney. Want a culprit? There he is! So, in that sense, I agree that Drew is not the cause of this sorry state of affairs.
I make the case that he is the victim of TD, the person that is killing the franchise.
-
Well then flame me too, because I condider him to be one of the top mlbs in the NFL. Superstar? No, but the man can play football.
-
As long as we are talking about positives, I am pleased thus far with Marcus Price.
Imo, he is a man working hard and trying to make the most of an opportunity. Last year, he played great vs the giants and didn't play so well thereafter. This season, he has given us 2 solid games against 2 solid defenses. I hope that he stays in at LT even when Jennings ala Cart returns. He may as well, whereas Jennings wants out anyway.
I wish TD would make an immediate effort to lock him up for a few years.
It just occured to me, maybe this is a guy who McNally COULD successfully coach.
Seriously, Jennings is Jennings and Williams doesn't seem to give a rat's a$$. McNally is not to be blamed for them.
Price otoh has never looked better. At least he seems to care and work hard.

I'm not sure that Mularkey is to blame for these problems. Our starting OLG couldn't even make Baltimore's roster. Our ORT is a joke. We don't have all the talent in the world at center. Our QBs consist of Bledsoe, a journeyman, and a rookie with a broken leg. Except for Milloy, we don't really have any safeties. What exactly do you expect a rookie head coach to accomplish with a roster like this?
I gotta admit, you are painting a very clear picture.
This is what TD left MM to contend with.
BUT, why on earth did he start Henry?
-
Please consider the possibility of a tradedown for extra, less costly picks.
I think that it was a stupid trade and would rather have the pick, but I hope to be proven wrong.
-
That Sir, is a very valid question. Call me crazy but in 02, I thought that McKinnie was ours. In 03 there was Steinbach, and last year I was looking at Snee, Smiley etc. For that matter, I wanted Hutchinson in 01.
Posters think that there is some miracle cure for the OL. There is not. Want some good news? Price is playing well. He is enthusiastic, agile, and imo at least as good overall as Jennings. Hopefully he will improve, but there are still holes at LG and OC. RT? Forget about it.
My post was as much about TD as anything else. He gave up the world for this kid. I want JP in there, but not for entire games. Not yet. This franchise needs to bounce back. If he is hurt, we will have an injured top 5 pick, and a #4 that sucks.
How long would it take any team to bounce back from this?
-
Come on KH, cool out. I don't want to see what cost us a very possible #1 pick in the 05 draft destroyed. I would love to see him in "spot duty" when healthy, and would rather he doesn't get killed behind this OL.
If you want, I will back off and let you continue to kneel at the feet of the latest messiah. Please continue. Oh, and Henry did look good sunday. Is this the proper party line? Keep me informed, OK?

>>>By the way, JP is not made of glass; he's a big boy. He can handle the NFL hits.<<<
What has he done to make you so sure?

In no way shape or form do I believe JP will be a Savior as a Rookie QB. The fact is, the odds are high that JP will struggle at times, regardless of what Big Ben is doing in Pittsburgh...
That being said I firmly believe that, when healthy, JP must be inserted. I'm a football guy, and ex-athlete (with the emphasis on EX), and the argument some have (no one in particular) about keeping JP out of harms way due to our less than average O-Line just does not compute with me. Any athlete worth his salt, especially a QB, should be itching to get on the Field. The cream always rises, and if JP's the real deal, it will show quickly. And this just in, chances are JP will get hurt behind this, or any O-Line. What QB does not get hurt? Sure there are a few, but they are certainly few and far between. Where would the Bills have been without Frank Reich? And that was behind an O-Line that had 4 out of 5 Starters go to the Pro Bowl at some time during their Bills Career. Plus, NFL Football is a Game where injury can happen at any second, regardless of contact...Just look at JP's injury...Stuff happens in the NFL...It's a brutally tough Sport...
There are 2 main reasons I want JP on the Field as soon as he's physically capable. The 1st reason is getting him a jump start on 2005. Every down JP takes in a Regular Season Game is a lesson learned. The 2nd reason is simply the addition by subtraction that should be the result of getting Drew the heck out of there...Anyone who does not feel Drew's poor performances over the past 2 years have effected this Team mentally in a negative fashion, just does not understand Team Sports, and especially Football...Simply put, there is no single position that can spark, or kill, a Teams psyche like the QB position...
The Bills are now 10-20 in the last 30 Games with Drew as a Starter. So... believe this, write it down, print it and copy it for posterity purposes, when Drew is gone you will hear how much this Team had given up on him, and how long that feeling had existed in the Locker Room. You'll never here it now, but when he's gone it will ring out like a siren...That is my personal guarantee...I'm not saying the Players will rip DB a new one because he's too nice a guy to beat up like that. But it will be crystal clear that the need for change has been felt among the Players for some time now...These guys are Jocks, they are Pro's, and I firmly believe they know better than anyone that a change is more than necessary...
So back to the initial point, yes I think JP should be inserted ASAP because I think every minute Bledsoe is in there is a another minute the Players seperate themselves from the belief that this Organization wants to do everything in their power (on the Field) to win as soon as possible...
And yes JP will struggle just like Elway, Manning, and a slew of others before him. But if he is that good, it will be apparent (in small ways, and in non-tangible ways) almost from the get go...Like I said, the cream always rises to the top...And QB's who are respected and believed in by their Team inspire better performances by their Teammates...JMO... B)
Thank you for a sincere, well thought post.
I too think that Drew is all but done. He still has the tools, but so did RJ. WHY is he done?
He is the latest victim of the Bills OL and dumb organization. KOK, you know as well as I do that ANY qb needs blocking.
That said, it is too late for Drew. He has been sacked what, 125 times in the last two and one half years? Many were unobstructed blasts, coming from the side of a big bag of 36 million dollar stevestojan, Mike Williams. Others came from "Jennings ala Cart," and the rest of these useless douchebags that TD fielded as an offensive line.
Sure, put him in, but keep your fingers crossed, because Mike Williams is going to miss blocks like the indifferent, out of shape slob that he is. Leonard Smith? Come now. How about when Teague comes back? Whoopdie !@#$ing doo!!! He is worse than Tucker imo.
My point is that TD created this sad state of affairs. JP is just the latest messiah of TSW. Again, Drew is finished. OK? TD gave up perhaps the first pick in the 05 draft for JP, the 4th qb chosen in 04 because he is an inept dunce.
Perhaps we might want to be careful and at least break him in slowly before we line him up behind this garbage.

Just a correction. MacNally was on record before he was hired and several times afterward that he should not be viewed as a miracle worker (his words) or some sort of savior. Still, its the nature of entertainment today that some fans still insisted incorrectly on viewing JMac, JP, , TD, Bledsoe or MM as some sort of savior. I agree with you that looking for someone to be a savior is simply not going to happen. Its silly for folks to do this.
It's the easiest thing in the world to simply identify flaws and mistakes in a player, coaches or personel person's game because no matter how successful an individual is they are human and have them. It really gets illy to take a team as flawed as the Bills record is and to simply point out these failings and then to claim that the player, coach or personnel guy is a total idiot who can do nothing right.
TSW is at its best when folks do some credible analysis and point how not simply the flaws but suggest how to improve and win with the reality of what we got.
Thank you. Your response was the point I was trying to make.
JP is a rookie who has not yey played a down in a regular game, and poster after poster is expecting him to come in and save the day. One even cited his selection as a credit to Donahoe, again, before he has thrown a pass in a real football game.
Ultimately, TD is the one who should shoulder the most blame for this sad state of affairs imo. He did what he had to do in year one. Since then, he has screwed up every draft and gave away a top 5 pick to boot.
He hired bush league coaches, and even extended one.
Since Levy, the best coach this team had was Wade Phillips. A great head coach? No, but imagine what he could have done with the talent on this defense as the DC! For one thing, we would not have to sit and bite our nails on 3rd and 16 attempts.
-
and I hope that I am not alone.
He only needs approx 65 yards to be 10th in all time passing yardage, and if he gets booed when this milestone is announced, we Bills fans are going to look like a collective horse's a$$ to the rest of the sports world.
I would hate to see this.

Let's move the conversation away from Bledsoe for a second.
Let's go back to a time with we were fighting the Flutie vs. Johnson battle.
Johnson, who was athletically gifted didn't see the field well and took WAY too many sacks. Flutie, who couldn't see over his line, would come in and a startling metamorphosis would occur.
Where the once wasn't a pocket a pocket would appear. Where there once wasn't time it seemed like there was an eternity.
Answer that question and you will have solved the Bledsoe riddle.
Sorry, you are wrong. Flutie was at his best when the pocket collapsed. Most of his completions were after rolling out. Teams actually WANTED Flutie to be in the pocket. This would usually negate his running threat, and his passes were very often batted down because he was so short. His arm was also comparitively weak.
Flutie WAS more effective than RJ mind you, but a football team is unlikely to win behind a crappy OL no matter who is qb. Flutie was a bandaid over the gaping wound of the Bills inability to block.

I do not blame one poster here for being pissed at the way Drew played yesterday. He was awful.
That said, I am seeing a trend here of people implying that all we need to do is plug Losman in there and our troubles are over. Sorry, not by a longshot. McNally was going to save the day too, right?
There are far too many non-talented players on offense.
On defense, talent seems to abound, so why all the third and long conversions? Could it be dumb coaching?
I agree with all of you who think that the Bills need new direction. It should start with a GM who has the guts to hire a true coaching staff. A GM who is competent to conduct an NFL draft for his team. One who will give the loyal Bills fans what they deserve, a team of tough guys.
I want to see JP as much as the next guy, but let him fully heal. He is NOT enough by himself to turn this mess around. Look at what TD gave up for him!
I would hate to see him join the growing list of qbs ruined by the Bills OL.
-
TD, he created this mess.
-
Williams, Tucker and Smith?

>>>One thing is clear. We are 1-5 with Bledsoe at the helm this season, I won't even go into the road record for the last two year. Can someone please tell me why we shouldn't change just for the sake of change?<<<
Our record is worse with Henry as the starter this year. can we bench him too?
Seriously, most of our offense is piss poor. We cannot bench all of them. I will be at the game on Sunday and would rather watch Drew, however painful, than Shane Matthews.
Number for the day: 37 (and counting)

I guarantee a rushing TD from Willis, if he lasts the game.
HE will not be sliding on his ass.
