That reminds me of Dan Brandenberg. He was a pass rushing OLB drafted very late in round 7. In exhibition games he was pressuring and sacking QBs seemingly at will. The kid had great speed and seemed to be very strong. I couldn't believe how he was not drafted earlier, and based on his great preseason play he made the roster. Well, my bubble burst as soon as the regular season started. He was manhandled by blockers. They put him on special teams where he would get pancaked and soon he was out of the NFL.

Your point is well taken. I did point out that in the NFL and NCAA, RBs are less important these days. The stats that you posted above are very interesting, but my take on them is perhaps slightly different than yours. For instance, I don't think that Tannehill is a very good QB. Perhaps he is in the 50 percentile? Marriotta bordered on terrible imo. I think that much of Tannehill's success was due to defenses having to stay close and try to limit Henry, who is all but unstoppable when he gets into his rythym. I think that a better QB on that team probably would have taken them deep into the playoffs. Again, I don't dispute that football is now a passing game, and it doesn't really matter what I, or anybody else prefers. Taking player safety and fan interest into account, it is extremely unlikely for this to ever change. The owners are looking at protection for their main assets, which obviously are QBs. The days of Turkey Jones head slamming Bradshaw to the turf on a late hit are gone forever, just like the days of blood thirsty safeties owning the middle of the field. Given all of the above, I still can understand how players such as Barkley and Henry resent the fact that average QBs make at least twice as much as them while they are doing more of the heavy lifting but again, I cannot foresee this situation changing any time soon, if ever. Jmo.

The above is 100% true, however; things didn't work out the way that the NFLPA was hoping for. What happend was that the quarterbacks got almost all of the money that used to go to rookies. In many cases, older vets were and are being cut in order to pay quarterbacks. Their jobs are often taken by low paid rookies. I agree that the RB position is less important than it ever was. Of course this is due to the rule changes. I understand this but I can also understand why the RBs are so angry. In the last 4 years, Ryan Tannehill has been paid approx. 96 million dollars. Derrick Henry made approx 40 million. I heard these numbers today on Sirius Radio. Daniel Jones recently signed a 4 year contract for 160 million. Reports of guaranteed money vary between 82 and 92 million. Now, who could possibly blame Henry or Barkley for being unhappy? RBs are subject to extreme violence on almost every play. Their frustration under these circumstances is easy to understand but this is the way of the world. Macy's has closed many stores because folks are shopping on Amazon. Many of ones that remain open are getting decimated by shoplifters. It isn't fair, but such is life.

I agree. Most running backs seem to me to be about the same in quality. Their success seems to be dictated by mainly by: 1) The quality of their OL. 2) Whether or not their QB is good enough to keep the LBs and safeties playing back. The rule changes and safety concerns have made this a passing league and it is very unlikely to change.

I was thinking the same thing my friend. On that note, do you remember a left tackle we acquired from the Dolphins during the draught? He was rather thin for an OT and was a white guy. I can't remember his name or even the year that we had him, but I remember being suspicuious. Why would Miami give us a LT? Well, he was the worst player that I ever saw in the NFL. This man was getting beaten and destroyed on every play. I would watch the games actually frightened that he was going to get a QB or even a RB seriously harmed, or even killed. Sadly, I'm not exaggerating. I just can't remember his name. But as you say.....maybe I should be happy.

I remember him. He looked like he would be a great safety and was highly regarded. His only real problem was that he was woefully bad.

One that I predicted btw. He was the 4th or 5th best blocker on the Crimson Tide that season, AND he was injured. I saw this coming and posted as much on TSW.

I watched a game in which the Bills were playing in heavy rain and mud. Dockery was the only player on the field with a spotlessly clean uniform. His jersey looked like it just came from the dry cleaners. The Bills at one time created some sort of column by Langston Walker. OK great, but he was a simply awful player! I mean wtf??? This thread has brought back some odd memories. When Ralph did spend money, it was usually spent in ridiculous ways, such as a huge contract for Jerry Ostroski or a big extension for Kelsay. We also had Levy "promise" not to tag Clements. 🙄 I mean, really? Those were strange days indeed but looking back, those were actually funny times too in an odd way.

That one was really strange. He had absolutely no known history of drug use or psychosis. From all reports he was a model stydent and a great kid at Alabama.

I remember a "blocker" named Marcus Spriggs. As I recall he was a 6th round draft choice and was one of the worst players I ever saw in the NFL. Once RJ was the QB and a defender hit him quite late, and Spriggs was standing right there. RJ was laying on the turf bleeding. Not only did Spriggs fail to retaliate, he wouldn't even help RJ up. I understand that RJ doesn't have many fans here (nor does he deserve them), but that was pretty lame. Thankfully, Spriggs didn't last on the Bills.

Do you mean THE Robert Royal, the TE that other teams didn't even bother to cover when he ran patterns? Once at RWS at a tailgate I mentioned to you that Royal seemed to always be open. I thought that I was making an astute observation. You told me no, that the reason Royal was open was due to the fact that opposing teams didn't bother to cover him because his hands were just that bad. I admittedly didn't quite believe you. I had great seats at midfield in the upper deck in about the 3rd row and sure enough, there was Royal, flapping his arms all day by himself with zero coverage. When a ball was thrown his way he seemed to almost always drop it. Now, I am having a rough time believing that there were 14 free agents who were actually worse than Royal LOL! Good idea. I'm sure that he is in desperate need of more money and fame. He also would certainly want to take orders from another coach. If BB won't come over we can always offer Nick Saban the job as DC. He is another guy who would gladly obey another coach. But you love it here, no?

He was the Bobby Murcer of the NFL. Murcer was a very good player but he replaced Micky Mantle in center field. Schobel replaced Bruce, an obvious all time great. AS was about all we had in terms of pass rush for much of his time here. He was also lined up in ridiculous formations. The man even had 10 sacks in his last season but he was obviously fed up with the stupidity of Bills management.
