I'm sorry. I don't mean to sound dismissive. OK? In fact, I apologize for sounding as such. I ask you why, in your opinion, do the Bills have a better record this season. I think that its primarily because of the pass rush. Next (imho) would be because Orton isn't as painfully bad as Manuel. I really don't think that its because of the secondary. Put a top 15 qb and better blocking on the Buffalo Bills and they are superbowl contenders but of course, this is simply mho. And btw thanks for the dialogue.

OK....teams frequently line up in 4 or 5 wide formations. Let's draft defensive backs in round 1 instead of pass rushers. We can cover them all with first round, or perhaps top 10 picks. Sounds like a plan, right? Lets forget about QBs, LTs and pass rushing DEs. They are a dime a dozen and matter less than the aptly titled "secondary." Wait.....we did this and haven't made the playoffs in this century. Never mind.

If there is no such thing as a shutdown corner, why draft one with a top 10 pick, this on a team with serious quarterback problems? The rule changes have completely revolutionized this sport. What IS interesting is that the most important positions remain the same. NFL football teams need a better than average QB, pass rushers and blocking in order to win football games. Defensive backs are of little importance compared to the above. And btw, Searcy and Robey are making play after play. Isn't it interesting to note where they were drafted as compared to the rest of our secondary?

1) All Preston Brown, Bradham and Spikes did today was kick peoples asses. This is one trio of tough, badass linebackers. 2) The pick by Orton in the early second quarter (in the end zone) was a bad one. It actually looked like a rookie mistake. More on Orton to come. 3) Gilmore was getting beat on short passes in the entire first half. I must however say that he came around and had an all around good game. 4) I am concerned about Cordy Glenn. He looked like a plodding Right Tackle today imo. I don't know what his problem is but it is a concern. 5) I live in a silver mine, and I call it Beggar's Tomb. I got me a violin and I beg you call the tune. Anybody's choice, I can hear your voice. Wo-oah what I want to know-oh, How does the song go? 6) Sammy Watkins is hobbled. There is no debate here. I really do hope that his condition doesn't get worse. 7) A few have you have taken me to task about my praise of Mr. Searcy. Don't get me wrong, I love the dialogue but there is no longer any doubt how much value he brings to this football team. Once again, he will be a head coach some day. This man is PURE football. 8) This game appeared to be slow today in terms of the footing. Nobody looked THAT fast. Do you agree? In the Alabama game last night players on both teams were flying all over the field. Maybe it was be me. 9) In the credit where it is due department, Orton came around and was able to hit Woods with some truly nice passes. The TD to Hogan was also a great play. 10) The passes to Gray were very good, however strange, no? The guy looks like Hercules and ran out of bounds. Plus, he seemed to be alone on both of his big plays. I admit it, I didn't know that the man was on our football team. I had really no idea what was going on lol. 11) This defensive line reminds me of the one in which Bryce Paup had 17 1/2 sacks and was the NFL Defensive MVP. They take turns having great games and feed off of what is happening with each other. Mario was doubled all day and I think held more often than not. His fellow linemen were able to take advantage of this. How great is that?! My hope is that the Bills offer a big contract to Hughes right now. He is a modern day Bryce Paup imo. 12) I really like Marrone, but I am not his biggest fan in terms of being a head coach. That said, he was great today. It was his best game ever in terms of taking control and managing game and the clock, or so I think. 13) I am on a personal quest to be a better person. I won't go into this but I am going to regress just a bit. Watching KW knock that little obnoxious twit on his ass was a sight to behold. 14) Congrats my friends. We truly do deserve good days. 15) GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fred Jackson: "Whitner Dumb and an Idiot"
Bill from NYC replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Thank You 1,000 Times!!!!!!! I think that I took more heat on this board for blasting Whitner than all other posters on the board combined. I was absolutely livid as well as totally dumbfounded the second this abortion of a draft selection was announced. He came to Buffalo, actually held out, and got in trouble for a domestic. Yes, a horror from day 1. After that, he couldn't cover at all. Do you remember the game in the snow against the Bears. They had some white guy at TE; I can't remember his name. Lil Donte made him look like Kellen Winslow Sr. And he DID lose his starting job for a while but he DID pocket every dime of a 36 million dollar contract! That draft was stacked too, and Levy said that he turned down NUMEROUS offers to trade down. To this day, it's hard to fathom the incompetence of Levy/Jauron. -
The above was my exact point. And I will add that Cutler makes at least 17 million, right. So does Stafford and as I recall Flacco gets 21 mil. Orton, EJ and Mallet combined would earn approx. 10 mil. so it wouldn't be tough on the purse nor the salary cap. Thanks Bro. I used to think the same but James Lofton said otherwise. He said that the offense had to be completely revamped because of the switch to Orton and credited Hackett. Your complaints about the OL are valid. I cannot however agree wit the above. Watkins, whether one agrees with the trade or not, is great (although seemingly hampered by injury). Woods is much improved and actually took over a football game. Hogan is an interesting wideout. Great? Of course not but I sure will take him over TJ Graham. Btw, the Watkins trade will debated for years and for good reason. I can totally see both sides of the issue. GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1) I am not the optimistic sort, but I have a an inkling that we are going to win this football game on Sunday. 2) I am starting to think that Hackett isn't so bad. In the offseason, he based his offense around Manuel and Thad Lewis, 2 running qbs (or so they say). They both sucked, and he had to rebuild around Orton, who in terms of style is their polar opposite. 3) Go ahead and blast me for this.....curse at me and call me a moron, but I hope that the Bills sign Ryan Mallett in the offseason. You know why? Because he would cost pennies. And like you, I do suspect that he is a total idiot. But IF he can straighten out, he could hit Watkins on the hands with 60 yard post patterns. 4) I am thankful to see that WNY is recovering from this storm. You people are amazing. Nemo was the worst blizzard that I have ever lived through and you had twice that. I pray that none of you suffered losses. 5) Brad Hopkins on Sirius likened the Bills with EJ Manuel to having a shiny new Ferrari with a 16 year old behind the wheel. He didn't rave about Orton mind you, but did say that he was better and that Bills Fans should be thankful. 6) I hope I will have time to post after the game on Sunday. 7) Mario and Woods took over the Jet game, and Robey keeps making plays. 8) GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bandit, you are probably much younger than me, but Joe Namath and Kenny Stabler (Crimson Tide QBs) were party animals. They both played for Bear Bryant who pretty much had them under control but when they made the big leagues, they really let loose. It still happens at Bama with Saban at times. Stabler wasn't as talented as Namath but he threw darts, and he played behind what I think was the best OL in the history of football (yes, I focused on blocking even in those days . Also, many of the players on that Raider team were psychotics, crazier than him. Both of these guys were truly great and would have had longer careers if they had taken care of themselves

Game day coaching decisions...why so difficult?
Bill from NYC replied to eball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree with this entire post, but I think that the job saving mentality started from the top (Brandon). I think that the assertion that the Marrone hire was due to his being a Brandon Syracuse crony is a foregone conclusion. Whaley is another story. I have gone back and forth wrt the Watkins trade. I thought he would be very good but the fact is, he is actually great. This kid wins football games but YOU always say that the draft is a process. I think that our DL is great. That said, KW is aging and imo ailing. Hughes is going to be a UFA. Mario is great and vastly underrated imo, but he is not young. Dareus is playing his ass off but he is going to cost 15 million per season sooner than later, and has a sketchy off field history. The OL needs at least 1 guard, probably 2, and I'm not loving Wood at OC this year. And sadly, Cordy Glenn isn't getting better from where I sit. Oh, and we certainly need a running back. Given the above, I really am going to question giving up the 2015 first round pick. I can't help it. So, I put Whaley right in there with the rest of them in terms of acting to save his job. Oh and I forgot, we have SERIOUS QB issues. Imo, if this team doesn't somehow make the playoffs the entire lot should be fired from Brandon on down. -
Some thoughts re coaching, the GM and moving forward
Bill from NYC replied to jahnyc's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The above sums things up perfectly imo. -
Spiller isn't as good as Bryce Brown and Fred will be 70 by the time next season starts. Brandon should be the first one fired. He is the one responsible for bringing in this amateurish Syracuse contingent. This is the NFL, not small time football. And we can all gather around and kiss Whaley's ass, but he traded away our 2015 1st round pick for a receiver while we are lacking at quarterback. They should all be fired.
-
Marrone is beyond awful. His play calling is as bad as one could imagine. He doesn't seem to have any vision, and he forced me to eliminate the word "obviously" from my vocabulary. Seriously, I can't say this word anymore.

The last time I missed any part of a Bills game was when my daughter got injured and I had to take her to the ER. We beat Atlanta that week and Quinn Early was on the team. This time, it was good personal news. I don't want to cheapen what I try to do and post "thoughts" to hear myself babble. I will leave you, my friends, with this. 1) Hackett called a great game imo. The fumble and the loss were not his fault. 2) Dareus and Mario are simply great players. 3) Orton could have won us this game but he did not. 4) Fumble or not, Bryce Brown did add another dimension to this football team. 5) GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pettine is a fantastic coach. He put players such as Robey and Searcy in position to make big plays. Not only that, McKelvin was barely average until Pettine came to town. I also love his attack style. The man has a bright future in this league.
-
Seriously, the above is a great post. The fan in me thinks that Orton can take this team to the playoffs this year or next. The pessimist side has doubts. Still, he IS a pro at, like you said, the toughest position to play in any sport. It really is fun to watch this team with a real qb. There might be issues with Orton down the road, but not right now. Count me as one who still thinks the Bills need to bring in another qb. But teams should always be doing this, especially in the draft. Our other needs shouldn't be THAT hard to fill. This would include OG and RB. At this point, let's make the freaking playoffs, ya know? GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Week 9 - Who to root for. The Dolphins?!
Bill from NYC replied to Kelly the Dog's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Brother, I think that we can agree that both of us devote way too much time into this. That said, I have thought about it and came to the same conclusion. Miami has a brutal schedule ahead and SD beat us. I won't be upset either way mind you but I am in agreement with you. It is also cool that NE plays Denver and the Ravens play the Steelers. Now, if only the Jets can beat KC! n any event, I am rooting for the Jets and Miami this week. Strange indeed. -
There is so much to say about this article that I must itemize..... 1) I give Schwartz a lot of credit for the development of the backup defensive linemen. A TON of credit. 2) The NE game REALLY pissed me off. We can all hate on Brady, but he is flat out great. He is also old. Everything hurts more when one ages, let alone getting slammed by professional football players. We don't have the safeties to cover a healthy Gronk but I ask you.....who does? I would rather see Searcy blitzing a lot and moving Brady out of the pocket, perhaps into an oncoming Mario. 3) We just beat the Jets. I too am thrilled, but let's remember that they have no quarterback. It is easier to play back just a bit and rely more on the front 4. I get this. 4) QBs are starting to get banged up or so it seems. Let's see what Romo has left. I never root for injury, but I would like to see Alex Smith leveled a few times early on. 5) I will never dis Pettine. He is a fine coach and imo he helped change the philosophy in Buffalo. 6) The idea (or so I think) is for us to make the playoffs. It is going to take aggression. The DL is a strength. That said, I like it when players such as Robey, Bradham and my man Searcy get in there and pressure and/or sack the opposing qb. 7) GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
