We did, but he cost the team approx. 37 million real cap dollars and he simply did NOT win football games for the team. We passed on countless top players and even turned down numerous offers to trade down (I heard Marv say it). That draft made this team a loser for many, many years.

They are similar, but McKinnie had a higher ceiling. I got the feeling that he never really cared. He was a guy who imo could have played at an Orlando Pace level if he worked hard, and Pace was my favorite LT. Teams signed McKinnie even after he was old and he was still decent. That is how gifted he was, or so I think.

I forgot about Dalton! I wonder what his record would be if he was not playing on perhaps the most talented team in the league. That said, he is probably worth whatever he is paid these days. Edit: The Bengals did well with Dalton's contract..... http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cincinnati-bengals/andy-dalton/

That was a great deal, yes. Do you think Cutler would have taken it? Or Wilson? Or Eli Manning? As I said in a post below, teams will be crippled wrt the salary cap by these contracts and there isn't much that can be done about it. And I agree with metz above. Can the Skins let Cousins walk and perhaps wind up with an EJ or Geno Smith?
-
No doubt, but there is more to consider..... Did you see the post about Cousins? I will bet you that Gilmore will cost within 2 million per season of what Cousins makes. Even if we were talking about Mel Blount, he can only cover one receiver and teams often play 4 or 5 wide. I see a new trend coming today. Teams such as the Dolphins, Bears, and perhaps the Redskins, will be hamstrung by having to pay HUGE dollars to QBs who are "good," but never really won anything. Even Seattle who did win is going to pay through the nose for Wilson! Now, a corner can have the same effect. I would not want to pay Revis 16 mil. per year. Sammy got the key first down against him, no? Darby was a GREAT pick in round 2! Off the charts wonderful selection. He doesn't kill your cap either. I have arrived at the conclusion that it is good to draft corners, but imo (and this is just that, imo), it is still dumb for an NFL franchise to squander its best resources on defensive backs.

Thanks so much for the kind words. Aside from one game against Arizona (which I attended and he was given a game ball), I would not call him dominant. Imo he was a lot closer to mediocre. I disagree about the "danger signs" as well. He had a chronic ankle injury in college, and an obvious weight problem. I never believe the listed weights and if he was 375 it wouldn't surprise me. Since the MW selection, I am leery of guys like him in the draft. In college, his brute strength enabled him to just beat people up to the point of utter dominance. In the pros it very rarely works like that. One must be able to move and play football. Remember Charles Johnson? To this day I can't name 5 guys as fast as him. The kid was always wide open at MSU. I thought he would be a Hall of Fame player, but I thought wrong. He had a narrow frame (another flag imo) and was beaten within an inch of his life in the NFL, but I digress. My signature on TSW back then was "Draft McKinnie." They should have listened. Thanks again. PS: I always judge a draft by who a team passes on as much as by who they select. The Maybin pick was off the charts stupid no doubt but by my standards, the Whitner pick was really just as dumb.

Are you an optimist or a pessimist?

Unfortunately, that's pretty much where I lean in terms of a prediction. -

That is sadly correct. -
They have a freshman from California. In practice, he threw a football 70 yards through the uprights and Saban won't let him on the field. He is a big kid but he's skinny. Believe it or not, they might be better next year but they have to replace Henry.

I liked Barron coming out of college more than I did Dre, but I wouldn't have taken him at #7. It makes no sense.

No, but read my posts about Kuandjio before and after the draft.

I predicted that the University of Alabama Crimson Tide might be pretty good in 2015.

Ouch! I have been trying for years to forget about that disastrous pick! I think that today, RTs are becoming more important week by week. That said, in those days for a RT to be selected at #4, I would want him to be as good as Erik Williams (imo the best RT ever) or Bob Brown. Did they project Williams to LT at some point. Probably but he weighed at least 350 and had a bad ankle. Unbelievable. I know how you don't care as much as I do about 1st round picks but choices like that actually cripple a franchise.

My memory is cloudy, but I remember being angry and even scared that he might return to the team. And yes he does seem like a nice guy, but I am just so happy that he is gone. That said, one of the top 10 posts ever on TSW was the "countdown to Spiller's 2000 season! :)
-
As I recall, Whaley offered him a contract, no? Yes it was, it was right there with 2006.

This would be a worthy debate AFTER the season imo. Karlos is scoring touchdowns galore. If he continues to do so at anywhere near this rate, he would command a decent draft pick in a trade. Remember, his salary is about what, 400K per year? This is absolute peanuts. I don't know what McCoy will cost in 2016, but I am guessing 10 to 12 times as much, and he's older. And Coach, this post isn't about who is a better, more talented player. I am speaking ONLY of draft value.

I agree 100%. What I saw last night was a team which imo was NOT the dynasty Steelers. If Pierre Paul can force Brady off his rhythm, so can Hughes and Mario. Pressure up the middle from Dareus would actually drive Brady into one of these guys, or even a blitzing defensive back. I am going to go out o a limb here and predict that Rex, as poorly as he has ran this defense, will see the obvious and the Bills will win this game. I am looking at 24-16 Bills.

DT is a must. Chances are (imo) Kyle is gone. If Marcel gets hurt, then what?

You are blaming Tyrod for things that were not his fault. Sammy played a clutch game but he clearly left his feet too soon on the opening play. 4 sacks? Not bad with an average OL, and playing against a monster DL, this on the road. The bottom line with Tyrod is that the kid is good. Is there room to improve? Sure, and there is no reason to think that he will not get better with time. I'm liking it.

I first watched him with Denver, and thought that he was a top 10 all time wide receiver. But, Marshall is a very sick man. He is an admitted sufferer of Borderline Personality Disorder, for which there is no cure. He has had numerous domestic incidents and problems with the police which should not surprise anyone. If anybody has a borderline in their family they know what a bad situation this is. They want people to "choose sides" and often instigate long term family feuds because they often pit people against each other. In psych wards, they are disruptive to the other patients and frequently try to create "factions." I can only imagine Marshall in a locker room. Despite all this, the man continues to put up great numbers, but I don't know how much I could ever trust him on my team. A sad situation indeed.

1) It was nice to see Clay more involved in the offense. 2) Look, do count me as one who thinks that it's great to be cheerful, but why did Bowles have a weird smile on his face for most of the game? I can't relate to being so chipper under those circumstances. 3) I can almost excuse the OL for playing poorly in the second half. The Jet DL consists of huge athletic monsters and they ware coming at us. 4) Tyrod was in control tonight but I would like to know who to blame for the wasted timeouts. More to come on TT. 5) No less than 3 HUGE PLAYS??? Really??? Rambo took over the game tonight and not a soul on Earth would have predicted this. Way to play kid!!!!!!!!!! 6) Call me stubborn. Call me stupid. Call me a guy who is stuck in a time warp. Fine thanks, but I cannot stand a defensive scheme that almost allowed Fitz to come back and beat us. Even the one sack by Dareus was a coverage sack. 7) Well I ain't often right but I've never been wrong, It seldom turns out the way it does in the song. Once in a while you get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right. 8) Revis, despite the stats, had his hands full with Sammy tonight. Fantasy guys might see Sammy's performance as not good. I get this, but those were some clutch first downs he made! 9) Tyrod proved something to me tonight that truthfully, I have been thinking for a while. The day of the running qb has arrived. I strongly believe this. I think that in just a few years, half of the teams will have this style of QB. We shall see. 10) Yes, it does look very easy on television, but Lawson should have had a pick 6 in the 1st quarter. He made one important tackle as I recall but he did not play so well tonight from what I could see. 11) McCoy played hard tonight. He had to fight for many of those yards. 12) Very good play by both corners. I don't know how they did it with so little pass rush. Kudos to Gilmore and Darby! 13) The Bills found a way to make us sweat it out but I will take a divisional win, on the road any day. Time for them to rest up and get better. 14) GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am very high on the kid but I still think he will need 75 yds. or more on the ground tonight. Jmo.

Their w/l/ record is not very good. This post, while sensible, isn't the most positive one I have ever read. Not that it should be mind you, but why take him to task when you don't sound so positive either?
