Agreed. I never had any issues with him and he did know his football. -
The Crying Game: Consolidated thread for the downers
Bill from NYC replied to NewEra's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
OK, you make some sense here but let me ask you this: Would it ever have been OK to be critical or cynical. Maybe at year 9? Or year 14? Or any other random season? It is virtually impossible to not make the playoffs for 17 years. This league has a salary cap, and bad teams draft first. Like you said, in last 17 years we have had numerous GMs and Head Coaches. Could it be different now? Perhaps but there would seem to be lots of work to do. I suggesting rooting for Kansas City to lose games, and for a sane draft in 2018. This would be a healthy start. -
The Crying Game: Consolidated thread for the downers
Bill from NYC replied to NewEra's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I struggle with this post K-9. I don't think that being critical of obvious mistakes made by the Bills is "investing in negative outcomes." I like to come here and talk Bills Football with posters who are informed about both football and the Bills. It is much more fun to do so when the Bills win. It is not the fault of fans that the Bills are not a good football team. Bills Fans are not to blame for the terrible drafts, year after year. Bills Fans didn't hire Whaley or Rex Ryan. I have SOME faith in the Bills because they fired the above losing duo. And while the draft wasn't quite as bad as usual because of the 2018 pick, I find little reason to be thrilled, but I'm not hoping for bad news, ya know? -
Well said. In terms of roster building, what many don't seem to grasp is that a draft isn't successful just because one or two are "good." Plenty of players are good but winning is the goal. That's why it usually takes time to really be able to evaluate a draft. For instance, Gilmore was good. A case could be made that Whitner was good as well but neither translated into winning football games. The absolute best way to build a winning team is through the draft, but it is a process. The Bills historically waste high (often very high) picks on defensive backs and running backs, and they lose football games. Now, Clay and Shady (free agent signings) are the highest paid players and the Bills are losing football games. Whether or not they are 'good" is not the issue. Like I said, Whaley was a rank amateur and had to go. Hopefully Brandon is next. We really do need a new system.

OK e-man, but those numbers are a concern by any stretch. Those two would not, and should not be the highest paid players on virtually any team in the NFL. I am just so glad that they got rid of Whaley!!!

Maybe he won't bother selling it. He can just trade up.

If Bills Don't Get A Franchise QB In 2018
Bill from NYC replied to BuffaloBaumer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I must admit, having the extra pick really gives Bills Fans something extra to cheer for. And as much as I never want to see injuries, the injury rate in the NFL is 100%. A team can look great, have a few key starters go down, and finish in the bottom 10. McDermott knows this very well, right? -
I am glad we did not draft...

I hear ya John! It would have been a stupid move to draft him at 10 no matter how healthy he was. -
Reuben Foster might miss 2017 season due to shoulder
Bill from NYC replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What is your point here? Is this your way of telling us that you know a lot more than other posters here? Or, do you think it was a stroke of genius to grab a corner in round 1? -
Should the Bills trade Tyrod?
Bill from NYC replied to LeGOATski's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No, in 06 he stayed put and drafted a so-so, smallish defensive back at #8. Then, he traded up, went back into round 1 for a DT that sucked. Not finished, he then spent early 3rd and 4th round picks on defensive backs that were awful. I truly do hope that McDermott is a giant step up from Jauron, or else we could be looking at a 20-25 year playoff drought. I am not thrilled by this draft but it is way to early to condemn or even overly praise it imo. -

Do you really consider the above only a slight edge? It looks pretty substantial to me. -
Should the Bills trade Tyrod?
Bill from NYC replied to LeGOATski's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No. Look, now that we have an extra 1st round pick we as fans can now root against the Chiefs. This is fun for a Bills Fan, right? If the Bills trade Tyrod they will probably lose every game. Do any of you really want to spend a season like this? -
We should trade Sammy

I was away this weekend. What makes you say the above. Did I miss something? He HATES Sammy? -

RD 2, Pick 63: Dion Dawkins (OT) - TEM
Bill from NYC replied to SDS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You see, Cujo wasn't really THAT strong in college. He played LT because he was agile. In fact, several linemen on his team were stronger than him. He only threw up 21 reps at the combines which wasn't a whole lot for a man his size. If I am not mistaken, Dawkins had 26. If Cujo really was strong he would have fared well at RT, a position where brute strength is needed. It may take a little time, but I have a feeling that Dawkins will be a good player for the Bills. We shall see. -

It would be great if you and I could simply not notice the above kind of glaring stupidity. Really, it's almost too dumb to be true. You and I would be happier sports fans if we could simply turn a blind eye to what these idiots have done to our favorite football team. Looking at those numbers, it almost looks as if Whaley was trying to lose football games, and this is without getting into some of those contracts he doled out. -
Grade the 2017 Buffalo Bills draft
Bill from NYC replied to Real McClappy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I rate it a D. After all of these years we are right back on the 1st round defensive back merry go-round to losing football games. I think that most fans will never understand that what makes a draft successful is when your team wins football games. Gilmore was "good." So were countless other defensive backs that we wasted first round picks on but the team lost football games. This would seem to be pretty simple to grasp but I guess it is not. In any event, we always have hope this time of the year. GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
Agreed. Gil Brandt said that Whaley will certainly get a job but NOT as a GM, at least for the time being. He said he would have to do some work to ever get back to that capacity. I am paraphrasing but this is what I heard at approx. noon today on Sirius.

I saw his name before the draft and watched what little I could of him on you tube. He looked like a Guard to me, but this is not a bad thing at all. I love the fact that he played LT in college as did Andy Levitre, who played very well until he left the Bills. I like this pick a lot; it makes perfect sense. -

Like I said, it's as if we are in the movie "Groundhog Day." But instead of waking up to Andie McDowell we wake up and watch the Bills draft 1st round corners and lose football games. -
RD 1, Pick 27: Tre'Davious White (CB) - LSU
Bill from NYC replied to SDS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You are right. Why stop doing something that has worked so well? Let's keep drafting first round defensive backs and NEVER make the playoffs, right? Next year we can draft another one AND a running back! -

I think he means that we don't allocate enough resources to the secondary.
