But telling me that a 5 loss Florida team is better than Penn State is worth a kick in the jimmie....

Yes, I can't argue with that. That said, SMU was an utter disgrace and Indiana showed little. These teams were imposters. We will soon see what Clemson has. Ewers looks like he may have some problems, but I expect Texas to destroy them. You?

We thought it would decrease the quality of play.   I've been pleasantly surprised that, in general, that has not been the case.  It probably is for the elite programs like Georgia and Alabama because their monopoly on talent has been compromised a bit.   But better distributed talent is making the quality of play appear better beyond that.   When a team is just a position or 2 away from being really good.......they can shop for them in the portal and plug them right in.   That's a good thing.

I think that a lot of players basically becoming professional at the HS level is leading to more mature players entering college.   Look at Williams for Alabama.  17 year old superstar.  At the pro level we have seen more young players hit the ground running than we did a generation ago.   They play football year round growing up and seem more ready for big stages early.  When they were just broke kids getting exploited I think the maturation and discipline were things that were more on the coach to achieve.  Transfers used to be a sign that a player didn't like or respect the coach.   Now it's about $ and opportunity.  Players deserve that.

And I don't really think kid's being uncoachable or undisciplined are why Saban quit.   IMO he just knew the days of being able to monopolize talent were over and he didn't want to experience occasional seasons like Alabama did this year.    I think that if he had stayed in the NFL and had a HoF coaching career there he might do what Belichick did and gladly go back to college and try to build something.   But going from winning championships every year or 2 to being just another really good team was a backslide for him.   He set the bar too high.   I don't blame him.   He already owns the records.  It's all relative and less success in the future if he stayed in CFB was basically a given.

There is not much in the above with which I can argue, other than the factor of discipline.

In camp, DeBoer had ice cream trucks and blaring rap music. I don't have the stats but there was a notable increase in penalties. Malachi Moore (a great safety who never had any issues) had a meltdown on the field and a very costly penalty. These things might have caused Saban to have cardiac illness.

Despite all of this I think that Milroe (not DeBoer) was the primary cause of Alabama losing three games. That said, do you think that Saban would have lost three games with this team, even with Milroe? I for one strongly doubt it if for no other reason, the discipline factor. I'm not sure that coaches will want to risk upsetting players now.

I do however agree with you that the talent will be more spread out. I mean, Derrick Henry had to wait a full season on the bench before he started. Davonta Smith caught all of FOUR passes in his freshman season before his title winning TD pass. Things like this may never happen again. Or will they?

I guess we will see how this all plays out.

Oklahoma State hasn't had a team capable of winning a national championship since the 1940's when they beat that powerhouse St Mary and were retroactively awarded a title 70 years later.😂

The team you are talking about didn't beat a team that finished anywhere near the playoff field in the rankings.  And they lost to Iowa State and Baylor in the same season!  OK State and the teams that beat them were not programs that could realistically be expected to beat an SEC team in a playoff format.   The fact that you are in denial about it underscores my point.   That was a season where Georgia and Alabama totally embarrassed their opponents in the playoff.   Which is kinda' how the 4 team playoff usually went pre-NIL.

This is among the reasons why NIL and the transfer portal are good things.    The elite programs are still very good but the talent has become better distributed.   There are more teams with a chance now.........which makes a 12 team playoff possible.   And the fact that the non-playoff teams have a little recruiting edge in the portal is what a pro league would call a "competitive balance" measure.

The way it was before may have been easier for a billionaire funded Oklahoma State to finish with a top 10 ranking.........but it was irrelevant because they had no actual chance to win a national championship tournament.    Alabama's 3rd string had far more NFL talent than OK State's starting 22.   That was how college football actually was.   As bad as Michigan got whooped that season you could double that for that OK State.   You wouldn't be wishing for it back if you got to that playoff.   You were saved a reality check,  obviously.

I am not against NIL. I think that it should be regulated but I don't see how it can be unless the players form a union, but; even that seems like a difficult if not unlikely scenario. My question is: Do you think that NIL will decrease the quality of play both in the NCAA and the NFL?

I ask this because I suspect that it may. Kids out of high school are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars, and I'm thinking that not many of them are equipped to handle this. I know that I wouldn't want to take a hit from Ruben Foster if I had a million dollars in my pocket.

I also suspect that it will be harder for coaches to instill discipline in these kids, especially for "Saban style" coaches. This is obviously why he quit. He talked about the value of discipline for his entire career. This was an instrumental part of why he (and his players) were so successful, and countless players do and will attest to this. Now, a player can tell a coach to "f*^k off" and go sign with another team. I just can't see how this will not hurt the quality of play for many of the kids both short and long term.

Ouch! thank god for JA17 and the offense on this brilliant win today, but what do we make of this?  I really don’t think this pass defense the last two weeks can lead them to an AFC title let alone Super Bowl.  How does it get fixed?

What do I make of it? My conclusion is that because of Josh Allen, the Bills are good enough to beat any team, any place (to include a great team on the road, in a dome).

The term "generational" gets tossed around WAY too much imo. That said, when one watches Josh Allen, one is viewing a "generational" talent. Personally, I think that Josh is a more talented, better QB than John Elway, and NO sports fans in the United States are more deserving of having this great player on our team than long suffering, loyal Bills Fans.

  12. If you, or anyone wants to read a GREAT book about Detroit, here it is. The author Charlie Leduff is a bit screwy, but he is no joke. All of his books are very good but this one is simply great. Detroit makes the worst neighborhood in NYC look like Beverly Hills.

This is easily in my top ten books that I have ever read.

He said they would do away with Conference Championship game weekend. Those games will be eliminated.

In a thread on this page when they were considering expanding the four team playoff, I called for putting an end to conference championship games. In addition to the confusion it caused this year, I think that the extra game (and injury risk) is unfair to the players.

I know.....they are getting paid now, but; they are also risking their future careers with this extra, somewhat meaningless game. Getting rid of conference championship games makes total sense imo.

As we celebrate our SEC Championship and 2nd seed in the playoff. 😜

As I said before, the SEC screwed GA and Bama with the schedule.  They had every chance to make balanced schedules and force Texas to play someone beside GA.  Still you have to win the games on your schedule and Bama lost to big to an Oklahoma team that Texas beat 34-3.  FYI I'm actually a DeBoer fan from his time at my alma mater Indiana (my wife and kids are Bulldogs).

This Alabama team was hard to watch in many games, and the problem was mostly the QB imo. In all honesty I'm surprised that they beat Georgia with Milroe at QB.

I agree witjh you 100% about the schedule. The SEC is just STACKED with talented and deep teams. I'm not sure how Ole Miss lost three games. Did you see their DL? Jaxon Dart is a fine QB imo. I thought that they could be title contenders. South Carolina is also very good and Alabama was lucky to beat them. We will see how these ACC teams fare in the playoffs, but I do not expect much from them.

It would appear that Alabama will improve next year but with the changes it won't  be easy.

  15. As a Crimson Tide Fan, I am not upset at the decision, although I don't necessarily agree with it. SMU looked pretty decent, but they play in a candy ass  conference. Notre Dame cannot even boast of doing that. That said, Alabama was shaky due to having Milroe at quarterback. They lost three games so I don't blame the committee for making jealous haters around the country happy.

While I will miss Alabama not competing in the playoffs, I'll be OK. I guess I will have to think back on Coach Saban winning SIX national titles at Alabama. Or the time Tua came in and sent the Bulldogs home weeping with the greatest play in the history of college football. Georgia Fans will never get over this and my heart bleeds for them. 😔Or does it? 😂

    SMU - F Bama!

If Bama and the SEC want to blame the CFP for IU and SMU making the playoff, then they only have to look internally.  The SEC gave GA, BAMA, Old Miss brutal schedules.  GA played Texas, Bama, Ole Miss on the road, played Tenn at home and also Clemson on a neutral site.  Brutal.  Those schedules made ESPN happy, but ultimately hurt the SEC's chances of getting 4 teams in.

These 16 team and 18 team conferences need to do a better job of balancing schedules.  Unfortunately, you don't know that teams like Fla St, Wash, and Mich are going to crap the bed after big years. To start the year in ESPN's preseason rankings Mich was 9th, Fla St 10th, Mizz 11th, Utah 12, Oklahoma 17th, OKST 18th.  What happened to those teams?

Ironically Michigan beat OSU and Oklahoma killed Bama, which is why Bama is home crying right now.  GA came through their gauntlet to with only 2 losses on the road to highly ranked teams, while Bama lost 3 including a home loss to Oklahoma and Vanderbilt.  Tough luck fellas.  Good to see some new teams for a change.

I don't blame you for your vitriolic comments about Alabama because as bad as you claim they were this season, they did manage to defeat Georgia yet again.

  16. I am not young and have seen my share of football, but; I have never seen better QB play than what I saw from Josh Allen last night. Never mind the great runs, some of those passes between the defenders looked impossible to complete. The three TD passes and runs were a milestone, but they don't even begin to tell the whole story of the game that he played. Josh Allen makes his receivers look like Jerry Rice. The loss sucked but we were lucky to be in the game after giving up 44 points on the road. I have total confidence in this team for as long as Josh stays healthy.

Bills fans really do deserve to have a great QB like Josh, this after decades of various degrees of suffering.

I feel like prior to the season starting the general vibe around here could fit into four categories

    1. Some posters discussed the risk of changing a HC

    2. Some felt he would ultimately figure out his postseason issues

    3. Some felt his regular season success was enough so far and if nothing else that should buy him more time

    4. Some felt he never would figure it out in the postseason and it was a lost cause

I was a #4 (go figure) and still remain in the last group. While thrilled at what we have done this year as I have hope I didn't expect to arrive at this season, nothing we did in the regular season would be able to change where I land in that grouping. We have just been too good in the regular season and that isn't where my concern is.  With all that said, I get a sense that I'm a minority at this point. That based on this years performance McD has largely quieted group #4 and most posters have now shifted into 1, 2, or 3 or at least a combination of them.

So I guess it's a two part question here...

    1. Has the season so far resulted in you shifting from one of the groupings to another?

    2. If we lose in the divisional round or earlier will that dramatically impact your perception of Sean and how this season has gone?

The title of this thread is a vey fair question.

I am going to answer yes. I was one of his biggest critics. I am not going to list them, but I will not back down on my criticism of some of his moves, (especially in his first season), but; he deserves a lot of praise for moves like getting rid of Diggs and bringing in Cooper. Josh sure looked happy enough while wallowing around in the snow, and keeping him happy is HUGE! 👍:)

I am a big enough person to look at the facts and state that I underestimated McDermott. That said, I am a greedy Bills fan and I want more. He needs to lead this team to a finish that they are capable of.  The way Josh is playing I am not afraid of any team. I think we can get there this year but we need Coach McDermott to keep things moving in the right direction, and I'm now thinking that there is a real possibility that he can.
