Breaking News: Rex Ryan and Rob Ryan Fired
Fan in Chicago replied to Mike in Horseheads's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I was merely being kind. If I were to go out on a limb, I would say he will be a DL coordinator and nothing more. I dont think the results of his underwhelming D were caused by him being pulled different ways. -

Or it very well could be that the Pegulas are learning and making course corrections as they go. First time owners of a football franchise was bound to have growing pains. A lot of rights so far - making a football decision to get rid of the Ryan brothers without consideration of money, immediately naming Whaley as leading the HC search (takes Brandon out of that role, allows Whaley to own the team's future and his own). You and a few others seem incredibly upset about these happenings but these are the right things to do. While we are at it, I am not one of those that think that Whaley is this scheming, back stabbing, self promoting schmuck. He was in the mode of 'give the coach whatever he wants to succeed' which may have been reflected the past 2 drafts. We now will truly see what a Whaley-led team looks like. In 2 years, we will have an answer. After several years, I am preaching patience. -

I have been thinking this for a while now. He wont get another HC gig again. Perhaps a DC under the right circumstances. -
We're about to see a purge...

Highly unlikely. We need pieces but the front lines are not nearly as devoid of talent as the results show. -

Makes you wonder why the Ryan brothers were trying to fit their style when the front personnel went a good fit. The right decision finally, imho -
(at least) Three fireable offenses by Rex yesterday:

If we were to judge yesterday's game in a vacuum, I would agree fully with you. However, the ref-ing simply exacerbated an underperforming D, what has become a symptom Ryan's coaching. -
Anybody Have A Change Of Heart About Gilmore?
Fan in Chicago replied to Bill from NYC's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Our secondary as a whole is bad. Gilmore has shown good things but several good things too. Considering that the overall D is up for an upgrade in the offseason, we need to keep as many of the good ones as we have and upgrade the other positions. Badly need safety help, as an example. Having said that, there is a budget to be mindful of and hence I would set a ceiling to his value and see where it shakes out. On a related note, it is striking how poorly the D has performed this season. Is it Ryan alone ? Rob Ryan or does Ed Reed also shoulder some of the blame for the poor secondary ? Gilmore is just one piece of this evaluation. Some of his performance is self preservation, but how much of it was due to poor schemes, being put in bad situations, having to cover for our weakness at safety, lack of communication ? Coaching evaluators should assess the overall performance and make changes where they need to be made. If it were up to me, as I said before, I would retain Gilmore at perhaps a top 6-10 corner scale. -

Peter - I know we fall on opposite sides of this argument and that is perfectly fine. We each have our reasons for our point of view. I do however, do not like it if the tone of a post appears condescending, rude or obnoxious. And thats all I am going to say. Not a large enough transgression for me to start a flaming war over. -
You do make logical points. However, I would argue that the 2013 and 2014 defenses were indeed very good and loaded. Ryan could have taken those pieces to build on instead of remolding the D to fit his style. Maybe the D may become what he intended in 2017. But that is not the makings of a good coach. As is known, the window for success is unusually small in the NFL. Coaches have been able to come in and get success pretty quickly (Ben McAdoo, Dan Quinn) so it was entirely justified to expect that after 2 offseasons, the 2016 Bills would make the playoffs. They still might, but it doesnt look promising. I expected a more decided march towards the playoffs instead of beating up on hapless teams and hoping for the chips to fall in our favor.

So a poster is only logical if he/she agrees with you ? -
In 2014, the trajectory was in the 'up' direction. You want subsequent coaches to continue to take that team in that direction. Think Gruden after Dungy in Tampa Bay. Gruden did not build that team - it was already loaded esp on the Defensive side. You would expect that an experienced coach takes such a team and takes them to, at a minimum, the playoffs. Two years in and we will be no better than in 2014. Also, what of Ryan's style and achievements lead you to believe that 2017 will be better ?

Adam Schefter: Rex Ryan to be fired end of season
Fan in Chicago replied to Yeezus's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If we were talking about a coach with his first HC gig, I may have been convinced in favor of your argument. The problem with Ryan is that much of his HC book has been written. Both his teams have been failures. It comes down to not only his D which folds against good offenses, but also his approach and game planning which comes up short in key games. Also, I would like to believe that a HC influences the draft by making recommendations about which players would fit his system. With that premise, both of the last 2 drafts are showing up to be very underwhelming with their results. I really dont know if giving him 1 or 2 more years will fix his fundamental coaching flaws. -

I know you passionately hated Marrone but his team's played hard. He, like Jauron, gets a bum rap for the results he produced. I realize I am probably the last semi-supporter left but Ryan for all his bluster has produced less. -
