  1. Funny, most Bears observers felt he was a pretty serviceable OG who's biggest negative was an inability to stay healthy. He was always nicked up and that was the reason for his release, not his performance.
  2. I totally disagree and sent Dicesare an email saying so. This is not a sports department issue, IMO. It's every student's (that includes athletes, too) responsibility to make sure they leave school properly. From the sound of the article, the kid knew he was registered for the Fall semister. Just because some AD flunky "walked him through the process" doesn't mean the kid was off the hook...he was ultimately resonsible for notifying the registar's office that he was leaving (not the financial aid dept. responsible for schlorships). Decesare is typical BN BS. He laments that MAC schools will point to this incidence as a means of disuading recruits from coming to UB...and then gives them the very news article they can photocopy to make the point. I don't see this as a sports story. The same thing could happen to any kid that doesn't tell the registar's office they're not going to be attending classes that they've already signed up for.
  3. I think the OL was (and will be) quite average. That's all they need to be, IMO, however. A lot of average lines--that play well together as a unit--have had a lot of success over the years. The Giants last SB line comes to mind....
  4. Let me get this straight. We've had one Pro Bowl RB who was recently traded and another one on the verge, yet our OL is complete bupkis? TD has lost it? Seems to me no one was complaining about the OL when Willis was racking up all those 100+ yard games.... Would I like some upgrades for OLT and OLG? Sure. But tell me who is available and at what price and I'll let you know if TD has lost it by going with Gandy in June before they even strap on the pads.
  5. Boy, am I ever going to take everything you have to say seriously again! http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/200...s/26923538.html NORM: Former lineman a pool party hit Former Cleveland Browns offensive lineman Ross Verba was a big hit at Green Valley Ranch's pool party on Sunday. The 6-foot-4, 300-pound party animal is a player on and off the field. Spies tell me Verba went on a legendary champagne binge after winning a reported half-million dollars at the Palms. Verba, a free spirit who's been described as a Lyle Alzado-in-training, blew most of it, I'm told, on a "massive champagne buying/spraying spree" at Green Valley Ranch's pool party known as Nirvana. During the party at his cabana, he recruited seven bikini-clad babes for a "hot body" contest, and rather than picking a single winner, he awarded each of the entries $10,000 for participating. Sources at the Palms and Green Valley Ranch confirm Verba was on the property. Verba left the Browns in May under a cloud of controversy, walking away after paying back a $465,000 bonus. Published reports said police in suburban Strongsville investigated two separate reports of sexual assault in 2004 that are alleged to have occurred at Verba's home last year. He was not accused in either incident.
  6. I grew up watching Hockey Night in Canada, and then the Punch Imlach-era Sabres. The thing I loved most about that period was all the end-to-end rushes, 2-on-1's, breakaways, etc. There used to be one or two memorable plays like that a game, rather than one or two a week like they play in the Eastern conferences today. The thing about today's rule changes is that some aren't really that radical. The goal lines were moved two feet further away from the end boards in 1997-98. Now they're going back. The center red line was added in 1943-44. Before that, there were only the two blue lines. http://www.virtualmuseum.ca/Exhibitions/Ho...tion/rules.html If today's rule changes bring more skating back into the game (imagine all the 4-on-4 possibilities), I'm all for it.
  7. How was the attendance? I've seen a lot of positve reviews but I'm curious if he was able to pull in the E-Street fans?
  8. Amen! Too bad we couldn't go back to a 24-team league. That would be one of the best "rule changes" the NHL could ever impose.
  9. Better for the NHL that he's in the Eastern Time Zone. Sabre's really boned at 13...not much immediate help gonna come with this pick. Oh Well....
  10. I'm happy about this change. It should open up the middle of the ice and negate the NZ trap. I think we might even see the return of the brakeaway or even the 2-on-1 (anybody under the age of 30 remember those?).
  11. I agree the drop from 1 to 2 is huge, but if the Sabres could snag another guy as good as Vanek again this year (assuming they'd pick in the 2-5 slots), that would be a big talent increase that I'd be happy with.
  12. If we don't get Crosby, I'd settle for Benoit Pouliot or Bobby Ryan, who'd be a natural fan favorite in a place like Buffalo: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/feature.asp?fid=7329
  13. Perez's background at HP is driving this. His whole philosophy is that the product life cycle is compressed into months rather than years and long-term innovation is not something that fits well with this model. I don't necessarily agree, but that's what his approach is going to be. If R&D spending is going to be maintained at 6% of sales, it would suggest that there'll be more hiring of cheaper/younger researchers to do more short-term projects. They may also be increasingly based outside of Ra Cha Cha.
  14. Kodak has 7,500 manufacturing employees at Kodak Park, almost all devoted to film production. If film sales are falling like a rock, what jobs are these folks expected to perform? It's sad to see long-time manufacturing employees laid off, but the expenses have to be justified by revenues and they're not. The problem with past management was its incrementalism--cutting 2,000 to 2,500 workers every few years when the number should have been 4,000+. Thay dragged their feet doing the unpleasent but necessary restructuring. Perez is taking the painful, but necessary steps, IMO. R&D expenditures will remain at 6% of sales through 2007. If they've been cutting Rochester R&D jobs, it's likely they've added R&D headcount elsewhere.
  15. Always a Buffalo connection to any story! LOL!
  16. It took 28 posts to get to the heart of the matter. It's not globalization...it's timid decisions by the two previous CEOs before Perez. They tried to milk the film business instead of making hard choices years ago when the digital photography era was clearly going to make film obsolete .
  17. Titans | More about Henry Extension Tue, 19 Jul 2005 19:37:36 -0700 Updating previous reports, ESPN.com's John Clayton reports RB Travis Henry's four-year contract extension with the Tennessee Titans will pay him about $9.7 million and includes a $4 million team option in 2006. Henry will play for his $1.25 million salary this year with no additional upfront money. If he performs at his normal 1,300-yard level, Henry can turn the deal into a $3 million or $3.5 million contract. What makes this so favorable to the Titans is that they don't have to invest in a running back in next year's draft, something they would have had to do in the first three rounds.
  18. Per A$$wipe: HENRY DEAL HARDLY IMPRESSIVE http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm While the Associated Press is reporting that the Titans have signed newly-acquired running back Travis Henry to a multiyear deal, the "real" media does not yet have the terms. We do. Well, sort of. Although, on paper, the deal contains bigger numbers and more years, a league source tells us that the practical value of the contract is, in essence, three years and $7.2 million. Many NFL contracts, especially those signed by veterans, contain unrealistic salaries and bonus figures in the out years. In Henry's case, the wages and/or boni after year three will render a continued relationship impractical under the terms of the current deal. And the problem then for Henry (as many running backs nearing and/or passing the big 3-0 are learning) is that he'll be too old to generate a big money contract. At 26, now is the time for Henry to get paid. Why not play this season under the final year of his deal and then hit the market? You know, the market that saw LaMont Jordan (also 26) reel in $25 million over five years from the Raiders. The bottom line? Ignore the puffed-up numbers that his agent Hadley Englehard will be leaking to the media (or, at a minimum, letting them hack into his NFLPA account so they can get the figures on their own). The truth is that Henry has signed what appears to be a bad deal, for no good reason
  19. Yeah, me too. I like the Boss (seen the E-Street'ers 3 times), but I just don't dig the Woody Guthrie thing he's into right now (Arlo's another matter...I'd love to see Bruce do some satirical stuff to leven his serious songs).
  20. I had the same thought when I wrote the above. Still, thinking as a FA for a moment, if I have an 85% shot at being a starter with the Bills with no incumbant to battle vs. a 50% chance to beat out someone already on a roster that the coaching staff knows (most other teams), I'd take my chances with the Bills.
  21. That may be true (especially with Gandy). But as FA's, they could also pick where they wanted to go. With starting spots clearly available, it may have factored into the decision to sign with the Bills rather than compete for backup spots on other teams.
