Tight End vs Possession WR. Discuss.
ChicagoRic replied to ChicagoRic's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Still looking for an answer on this. Is just a body size/mass thing that allows for a quicker change of direction for the WR? Regarding Dawson Knox: Combine stats are great, but the best ability is availability. Hopefully his hammy is all better and he can actually show something in this upcoming game. We have really only seen him in unpadded practices and some decent blocking last week. I wanna see some receiving reps. -
This post is a corollary to the "which WR do we keep" discussion. There are a few posters who have said that Duke Williams will be the odd man out because Croft/Knox/Sweeney can do everything Williams can and therefore a bigger possession type WR is not needed. I get the point, but it got me thinking. Any experts out there who want to address this argument? Are there scenarios where a WR of this type is better suited than a TE for a formation, concept or specific play?

The Bills need to keep Duke Williams
ChicagoRic replied to transplantbillsfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No. Zay is in zero danger of being cut because of his draft position, college pedigree, etc. That's not my choice, I'm just being realistic. If I had to choose between Duke Williams and Zay Jones, then Jones would be packing his bags. Or Williams vs McKenzie. Bye McKenzie, I read your bags are already packed. Check my post history, I am Duke Williams fanboy from the get go. For all the adversity Williams has been through, when he hits the field he looks like he belongs. -

I am hoping that Zay makes the year 3 leap. In my opinion he is is zero danger of being cut, but this is very much a make or break year for him. My biggest frustration with Jones is that he manages to get open, and the ball is delivered on the money, and he make an easy catch look difficult. Too many bobbles, double clutches and outright drops. Too many times where he should fight for the ball and just doesn't. For all his speed, size and agility, he has not put it all together yet. I know this is really intangible, but to me he often does not look confident making plays. I often wonder if all those drops in year 1 got to him mentally and he has yet to shake it off. If he can get out of his own head, Zay can be a really good WR. Will this be the year? -

Went back and watched Duke's CFL highlights again. Speedster? No, but that does not mean he cannot get open. He uses his size/strength/timing to block out defenders and get himself in a superior position to get the ball. Saw this time and again in the CFL vids and saw it again in his two preseason TDs. He timed his leaps perfectly to beat decent albeit 3rd string defense and go up to where only he could get the ball. Don't see anything at all wrong with a tough, high pointing, surehanded possession receiver who is also a willing blocker. Is he as "fun" to watch as McKenzie? Nope. The human joystick bopping around out there is entertaining, but here's the rub: In his 85 NFL touches, McKenzie has fumbled the ball 8 times. That's troubling. Critics decry Williams as JAG, but is McKenzie any less so? That being said, I'd love for the Bills to keep them both. -
Tired of the "running start" argument. Think "Big Physical Possession WR" who knows how to use his size and leverage to beat coverage. His timing and positioning when covered and when going up for contested balls is what stood out to me in the highlights. Dude is big-bodied and physical and knows how to work it to his advantage. Williams is by no means a lock to make the team, but at 6'3" and 225, he brings a different skillset than the other WR hopefuls.

My point is that you don't cut a guy on year 2 of a rookie contract because there is a learning curve for WRs and year 3 is often when it "clicks" and you get to see the player's true potential. I'll give it one more year and hope for the best.

I watched the CFL highlight video carefully. He was not always in motion presnap/getting a head start. Even from a standing start, what stood out to me is that he knows how and when to position his body to "get open". He is beating guys in pretty tight coverage with body control rather than speed. I am in no way anointing this guy as a day 1 starter, but he does display an interesting skillset. I'd be happy to see him as a situational #3 or an H--back. Anything above that is gravy.

Brandon Reilly (Former Bill) now in Dallas
ChicagoRic replied to CowgirlsFan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Said this before, saying it again. The best ability is AVAILABILITY. Reilly never got a shot because he can't stay healthy. If you can't get through preseason (or two) without tweaking a hamstring, you are not gonna see the field. Dude is constantly banged up. Tough? Yes. Good hands? Yes. Good routes? Yes. Fast enough? Yes. Available to play? Nope sorry. Broken Rib. How about now? Nope bad hammy. At best, he is a fringe player who doesn't know how to take a hit. -

Feeling like the switch has flipped for Allen and Zay Jones at the right time. Add in the other new young WRs and this is a DIFFERENT offense. Love it. -

Gotta agree with those saying that McCoy is....done. He looks hurt or creaky or something. Maybe just old. I HATE saying that because I love him as a player and as a leader on this team, but it just hasn't been there this season. Bring on the youth movement. We need someone to carry the rock besides Allen. -
In short, did Peterman's weaker arm prompt the coaching staff to stick with big, possession-type receivers heading into the season? My theory (really flimsy, but there you go) is that McDermott and Daboll thought that Peterman would be an effective game-manager type QB using short and intermediate routes and gave him the big, tall, receivers to fit that game plan. Clearly, it did not work out that way, but you gotta wonder....

Bills Sign WR Deonte Thompson to a 1-Year Deal
ChicagoRic replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Looked like a mediocre move the last time they brought him in, and all he did was put up the best numbers for a Bills WR in 2017. Dude was an unexpected bright spot, and yet somehow you find a way to go negative. 17 of his 27 catches were for first downs. -
Getting demoted to the practice squad may have been the best thing for him. Not taking plays off anymore, and it shows.

Peterman's two best plays are the facemask and roughness penalty. -
I'm constantly hearing that our wide receivers can't get separation. I know that speed is a factor but it can't be the only thing. Is it scheme? Is it coaching? Is it really just a lack of talent? Enlighten me.
