  1. Thanks, I have a many interests (fiction and non-fiction), but thought I'd post recent books I've really liked, and I'm just curious about books not on my radar and/or not sure if I should take the plunge. I've had "Manual of Detection" on my list for some time but have yet to pick it up. You're right, not many people read short fiction anymore, including me. However, when I do, I'm surprised why I have an aversion. I'm not an Ipad/Kindle reader, but I've noticed many authors are churning out some great short stories they've only e-published. For example, I'm a fan of Olen Steinhauer's "The Tourist" series (another strong recommendation), and found on Amazon a short story called "You Known What's Going On." http://www.amazon.com/You-Know-Whats-Going-ebook/dp/B004U2DUPQ/ref=la_B001ITYIM8_1_27?ie=UTF8&qid=1342107183&sr=1-27 99 cents for a nice little read.
  2. I thought I'd make a few book recommendations and ask for others to recommend what they've read lately -- Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn. I would highly recommend any of her three books (Sharp Objects, Dark Places) but this even tops the other two. I would be unfair to discuss any plot points other than to say that it starts with the disappearance of a man's wife. A dark, humorous, psychological mystery/drama. On Amazon, those who did not like it seemed be turned off by its "unHollywoodlike" story line, but that's exactly why I liked it. I prefer stories that take chances and don't wimp out, which makes Flynn one of the most fearless writers I've read. http://www.amazon.com/Gone-Girl-Novel-Gillian-Flynn/dp/030758836X/ref=la_B001JP3W46_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1342105683&sr=1-1 Sunne in Splendor - Sharon Kay Penman One of my most enjoyable historical novels, which reexamines Richard III. Deep, rich characters, very-well researched, not at all dry. It's a long book but you don't want it to end. For those familiar with the history Richard III (Shakespeare et al), you will find a very different character that plausibly makes the case that history is indeed written by the victors. I also highly recommend Penman's "Plantagenet" series that starts with "When Christ and His Saints Slept" that chronicles the English Civil War between King Stephen and the fierce Empress Empress Maude, as well as the rise the legendary Henry II and his indomitable wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine. http://www.amazon.com/The-Sunne-In-Splendour-Richard/dp/031237593X/ref=pd_sim_b_2 http://www.amazon.com/When-Christ-His-Saints-Slept/dp/0345396685
  3. My thoughts: - Even in the chaotic scene, how is it more people didn't see or hear another gunman? Including many press. - Why didn't Sirhan even entertain the possibility of another gunman? - Analysis of the each bullet should have put this to rest. - People are prone to conspiracies.
  4. Ok . . . "Before we help any further, let's see a picture . . ."
  5. I've thought this would make a good Wedding song: Dave Grohl cover of Zombie's song, "This will be our Year." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0px7htl0ClA&feature=related
  6. Poor, yet amusing, sentence structure. Should be while interviewing, he admits.
  7. She looks like an ideal woman.
  8. No, I considered Federer the possible 1/2. Yeah, pretty shocking, clearly the upset of the year, and possibly the past two or three years. I wonder what odds the London bookmakers had on that match. I looked up he bookmaker odds. Hard to tell, but looks like between 69 and 101 to 1. Not a bad payday.
  9. Don't hate them because they're beautiful. Seriously, I think it's a great era for women's tennis. An awful lot of competition. Unlike say, men's tennis that has three (two and a half?) dominant players and the rest that compete for fourth place.
  10. Our country has a lot of problems, but at I know one thing, that would never happen in the US.
  11. I could watch that all day.
  12. Best comment: "So now in order to get extra room to stretch out, and a blanket, you have to die on a flight?"
  13. Maria . . .
  14. Thinking same thing. That would be well over $10M in my neighborhood.
  15. It's fine. Not a far walk to inner harbor. I think that is a fairly new hotel.
  16. Wow is right. Who uses IE anymore?
  17. Clever. And pointless.
  18. Great weekend for Baltimore - Sailibration - commemorating War of 1812. Tens of thousands see world's tall ships, Blue Angels, Fort McHenry fire works over the Harbor, dinner at Heavy Seas brew pub, etc. Blue Angels again tomorrow.
  19. I'm not sayin' he shoud've killed her . . . but I understand . . .
  20. Wilco is my favorite band. Definite country background (Uncle Tupelo), and have consistently cranked out some of the best folk/country songs over the past 17 years. Hank Williams Sr and crew would have had them on the GOO stage but I doubt anyone in "country" music today hasheard of them.
  21. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Do any of you people know where these individuals learned how to shoot?... Private Joker. Private Joker: Sir. In the Marines, Sir. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: In the Marines. Outstanding. Those individuals showed what one motivated Marine and his rifle can do. And before you ladies leave my Island, you will all be able to do the same thing. I did forget to list one of the most outstanding "country" bands: THE Band. I don't think they made a mediocre song. Other than perhaps Robbie Robertson, all of them could easily be the best musician/singer in nearly any other band. I thought Levon Helm was on of the greatest singers of all-time, while Rick Danko was probably one of the most underrated. Hell, I could listen to Helm tell stories all day long. I'm sorry I never had the chance to see him live.
  22. Cook wasn't mentioned because this is comedians thread.
  23. Great movie. Man up Someone is a bit defensive about their sexuality. . . .
  24. He sings like a girl. And not in a good way.
