I'd be surprised to see any RB traded for a first rounder again. The position has fallen out of importance. Plus, in terms of trade value, one thing Richardson had going for him that Spiller doesn't was that he was only in the second year of his contract. No one is going to give up a first rounder for one year of an RB.

Wow, that's a classic of damning with faint praise. Those are the positives you come up with for Spiller and you still think someone is going to pay a second for him? And my point wasn't about whether we should or shouldn't trade Spiller. It was solely that I can't take your argument seriously. If you said we should trade him for a fifth and count ourselves lucky, I might disagree with your take on his value but at least it would be consistent.

I'd say the lower the talent level of the team, the easier it is to justify spending a spot on a second kicker, no? Not that I think they should, given the changes to kickoffs in recent years.

Why on earth would anyone trade anything, let alone a second, for the guy you just described? Pick one or the other, Spiller is worthless or we can trade him for a decent pick.

I don't agree. I think people would be very willing to come here if there was an understanding that the FO would aggressively pursue FA QBs in that scenario. I believe that with this roster, if EJ flounders that is the route they will need to go anyway.

Biggest problem for the Falcons is what is their identity? Seattle/San Francisco are strong defensive and running teams, Denver/New England/Green Bay have focus on their offense. It doesn't necessarily have to come from the coach (it doesn't for Denver or New England), but if you don't have a star player leading the team the coach needs to put his stamp on it, and Smith... like his team... just seems boring. Heck, even his name.

So... if a receiver puts up great numbers, that means the QB at least put up decent numbers? Really breaking new ground here.

Pettine has been coaching in the NFL since 2002 and had 4 years as the defensive coordinator of the Jets before proving he could run his own show last year. Reich is comparable to 2009 Pettine, maybe, but not 2013 Pettine.

Depends on the ownership situation and a new owner's personality. I don't think we have enough info to really judge. It's possible there could be a new owner who would come in and clean house even with a playoff appearance. Conversely, maybe the new owner will not want to rush to judgment and will give the current crew a third year to get things in order if the team is anything outside a complete tire fire.
