Maybe best hope since Marv Levy. While we all remember the 4 straight losses in the big dance, do we easily forget that the team then had the best regular season record of any team in football? At the end of the day, I'm just happy to see the team go a different route than the cast off/retread/has been. New coaches equals lots of new energy and optimism.

Troupe...will he get a chance to show us this year?
Luxy312 replied to HamSandwhich's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I was disgusted with that pick when it was made. They took this kid out of Central Florida in lieu of taking Terrence Cody out of Alabama. While some guys coming out of small programs go on to have success (ala Fred Jackson), it's not typical. I want the guys from national championship contenders that played against top level talent. -

That has Ryan Denney written all over it. LOL. -

I'm not sure there's really much to be excited about in Troup. Dareus is going to be in at DT on pretty much every play that he doesn't need a breather. Also, what would you expect Troup to say? The guy has had 17 tackles and 14 assists in 3 seasons. If he came out and said something along the lines of needing to continue to rehab from his countless injuries, I could see the Bills just cutting him outright. The Bills have 8 DT's on the roster right now. If they're seriously running mostly 3-4, they won't need 8. Some of those probably will play the DE spots too (Kyle Williams), but that still doesn't leave much room for Troup to get snaps, even if he does make the roster. -
The phenomena of rookie QB's having some measure of success isn't what you think. Recent ROY winners have had pretty great rookie seasons and not just "some measure of success". Let's look at actual history. 46 offensive rookies of the year since 1967. QB's - 7 WR's -8 RB's - 31 84.78% of the time, it hasn't been a QB. So much for the "leg up" theory. That's pretty much shot to hell by any measure of statistic that you look at. Recent QB's in Griffin, Newton, and Bradford had stellar rookie seasons that clearly stood out from any rookie WR's or RB's. There's NOTHING that you can really say that makes your statement true.

I don't disagree at all that Freddy still has value. I just think when you have a RB averaging 5.4 ypc and another averaging 4.5, that the first guy should be on the field more. Fred still has plenty of utility on this team and should be utilized less so that we finally can keep him healthy for an entire season. I don't think he's approaching the end of his career either. While he is older, he has a lot less game mileage on him than most RB's his age. To the second point, I'm not dismissing him at all. He's been productive for this team and can be used in both the running and passing game. People forget that before his injury last season, he was leading the league in total YPG for a RB. Still, Spiller is something really special. His dynamic running style reminds me a bit of Priest Holmes.

Possible changes coming to Pro Bowl

The pro-bowl should be abolished. It's garbage and always been garbage. -
EJ says this offense is easier than Florida State's ...
Luxy312 replied to Lothar's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The interview doesn't come off at all like what people are posting on here. He mentions how much more time he has too and that besides the on field work that he's working "full time" on the playbook and progressions. Too many like to skip the story and just read the crib notes. -
He had 1,700+ total yards last year with 8 TD's to boot. Averaged 6.0 YPC and 10.7 YPR. If the team doesn't find a way to get him more, they're idiots. Fred Jackson should be the more limited of the two, considering his significant injury risk. 75-25 is what I would think it should look like. Personally, I would like to see if Spiller can handle 250 carries and 75 receptions. Yet to be seen.

Mario Williams: no love for

After being a little worried about it, I like the fact that he answered all questions and just said that it would get uglier. Good for him. -
Have you been paying attention to what's going on in NY? The fact that Sanchez salary is guaranteed for 2013 means nothing. They don't "have" to start him just because he's getting paid. The Jets plan was to start Garrard and let Smith learn from him before eventually ceding the position. Now Garrard retired, while offering to continue to be Smith's mentor. Rumor around the league is that Sanchez has actually regressed as a passer. Regardless, I hear your other points. The main focus of my comments is that there are going to be plenty of teams with new offensive and defensive starters and that the Bills haven't "cornered the market" on opportunity for this to happen. They're not in any special position to do so.

If they do sign him, he's a special teamer first and foremost. However, let's think out of the box a little here. Freddy hasn't been able to complete a season in very recent times. They may perceive that Spiller can't carry the load, nor Choice share it with him if he had to step in for 6 games of the season. He might represent a good multi-purpose player. Definitely can help on special teams thought none the less.

Overwhelming presumptuousness might be a big understatement. There's at least 3 teams I can think of that will be starting their first and second round draft picks pretty much right out of the gates. The obvious is Geno Smith and Dee Milliner. With Garrard retiring, the writing is on the wall there. Milliner has to start right away with the loss of Revis island. Talk to me then about LeVeon Bell and Jarvis Jones. Jones starts right out of the gates, but do you think Bell is going to have a tough time beating out Jonathan Dwyer? I don't. Then you have Tavon Austin and Alec Ogletree for the Rams. I'm sure if I did even a little bit of looking at rosters that you could say the same thing about other teams as well. Opportunity is there to do the SAME THING, regardless of how much hype we want to put on our own team in May.

I question an article a little when it says he holds a record of 118 special teams tackles in a season. Slightly overstated. LOL.

Nothing about gambling either. LOL. -
I think this idea stinks worse than a monkey. Would we as fans really want to see a system in place that rewards teams drafting well with even more consideration to compete? Presumably, most teams that draft well also do pretty well and see the playoffs now and again. Giving to the "haves" is a horrendous idea. I think the NFL draft system works better than any other sport already. There's no reason to revisit it at this point.

I'm not sure anyone that isn't otherwise an idiot would take the over/under at 4.5 games. The opening line in Vegas was 6.5. If you get anyone to bet you at 4.5 San Jose, I want in. LOL. -
"Excited" might be a bit of an overstatement. I think the best characterization would be reservedly optimistic. When we've had to endure 13 years without the playoffs, your spirit gets a little bit crushed. Devoted fans will always root for their team, but there's that little voice in the back of your head that says that we'll have to endure more pain before it will get better. None the less, it's good to see change and on a dramatic level. There's an awful lot of "new" to this team. In fact, stack this team and front office side by side with 4-5 years ago. You won't find much that's common between the two. That at a minimum is good.

Stevie Johnson Thoughts On New Receivers
Luxy312 replied to BuffaloBaumer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's fun. We tend to forget that these guys are just people. Back in the 90's, I returned to WNY from college and played pickup basketball with Bruce Smith (and another guy I can't remember) in my home town (Springville). Nicest guy in the world. It's good to not see them act like they're above everyone else. -
EJ says this offense is easier than Florida State's ...
Luxy312 replied to Lothar's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think we as fans all need to have a frame of reference here as well. When he first learned the offense at Florida State, he was a much younger man coming out of playing high school football. The difference between high school and college is greater than it ever has been in terms of complexity and difficulty. There's a lot more college programs these days running the equivalent of a pro level play book. I look at it like this. When I went to college to get my 4 year degree, it was very challenging. I had it easy in high school, but it wasn't that way in college. Nowadays, I'm taking graduate level classes just for the heck of it and it's not hard at all. Maybe this young man has just grown up a lot more than some coming out of college. He certainly sounds like it in interviews. I'm very interested in the QB competition and can't wait to see this kid play. -

Kick him to the curb and get another agent experienced in selling real estate. -
Excellent point that most would simply gloss over. Add to that fact that he didn't really have a year last year due to the death in his family. I think this year will be a tribute year. Looking for Dareus to be the force that has been missing from the inside for years.

While I'm no longer a resident in the area, I have to say that it's about time. The Ralph as I remember it was a train wreck. People were hammered hours before games even started and then went into the game to drink even more. It's a shame really. Every where else I've gone, they sweep the drunks out quickly and toss them in jail. Soldier Field, Candlestick, Gilette, Lambeau, Century Link, etc. To the defense of some of those fans (not all), they have a reason to drink. 13 years without the playoffs marks the longest of any NFL team.
