What kind of defensive formation would you like to
WVUFootball29 replied to D' men's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Quoted from my post the other day I also think Coy Wire would be a good bandit player as the position plays more to his strengths(with that said, let the cruifixition begin). -
If by some chance Young does fall to 8 (poor combine/pro day showing) Buffalo has some serious potential to grab some decent picks in a trade. Even if they arent all in this draft, if a team wants Young bad enough you might possibly find a trade similar to what the bills dealt to the cowboys for JP. Just something to think about... However, the problem with this is if Young falls past 4 and the Jets, there are still 3 other teams that might take him or make the trade before we get to. All I can say it, whoever we take in the 1 round, it better be someone with a serious shot at starting next year.

the way I see it, GM's make the deals, not the coaches, but that being said, a GM would have to be either a complete fool, or some level of genius that I cannot comprehend to not allow his HC to have some say in which players they pick. Unless the GM spends a ton of time on the field and knows the HC's system as well as the players and coaching staff they probably don't know as well as the coaches which players will fit the system. Just my POV

Here ya go ESPN.com - Ravens Johnnie Lynn

1.) Tambla Hali, DE Penn State 2.) DeAngelo Williams, RB Memphis 3.) Vernon Davis, TE Maryland 4.) Jimmy Williams, CB Virginia Tech 5.) Michael Huff, S Texas 6.) Santonio Holmes, WR Ohio State 7.) Lendale White, RB USC 8.) Mathias Kiwanuka, DE Boston College 9.) Chad Greenway, LB Iowa 10.) Jay Cutler, QB Vanderbilt out of these ten I like Hali, Jimmy Williams and Michael Huff the best...especially if we are going to lose Nate Clements. If we were to take a running back, which I'm not totally opposed to given the uncertainty of WM at this end of this season, I'd rather have LenDale White. I'm not taking anything away from DW, but White might be a better option to share the backfield with WM, kinda like he was with Bush. Speed and power instead of speed and speed. Just a thought. But definately we should be trading down if our lineman arent there...down to the early to mid 20s and grab the Best OL/DL available

Amen to that Jim

that wouldnt suprise me either...but if that happens you can pretty much kiss Ferguson good bye

You know I'm not a big fan of Mortensen, but I think he's dead on with Cutler. However, I'm not too sure that even with a good senior bowl/combine that he's going to jump into the top 10....UNLESS chad pennington cannot return to the Jets with his injuries. So right now a lot revolves on outside factors where Cutler will go. Here's how I see it: Pennington returns 1.) Houston - Reggie Bush, RB USC 2.) New Orleans - Vince Young, QB Texas 3.) Tennessee - Matt Leinart, QB USC 4.) New York Jets - Mario Williams, DE N.C. State 5.) Green Bay - A.J. Hawk, LB Ohio State 6.) San Francisco - Toss up between Ngata, Hali, Huff (probably best athlete available) 7.) Oakland - Ngata or Williams, maybe White Pennington isnt good to go 1.) Houston - Reggie Bush, RB USC 2.) New Orleans - Vince Young, QB Texas 3.) Tennessee - Matt Leinart, QB USC 4.) New York Jets - Cutler 5.) Green Bay - A.J. Hawk, LB Ohio State 6.) San Francisco - Mario Williams 7.) Oakland - Ngata or Hali, maybe Williams Still a little early for a solid mock though...lots of factors that need to be determined

And I totally agree with you that greatness doesnt reflect coaching skills, which we've seen numerous times throughout history. However, I still believe that Ted Williams was a much better manager and coach than his record with 2 expansion teams indicate. No coach can make a career .230 hitter a .300 hitter, but a good coach can teach a .230 hitter to be a .250 hitter. The problem for Ted was he was given a team full of .230 hitters and was expected to turn them into champions. Sorry I'm just a big advocate of Ted Williams, especially after reading his book about hitting. I learned a lot and my batting average improved .78 from my final fall season of college ball to my final spring season. -

I gotta defend Teddy Ballgame here. He was a great player, an extremely intelligent baseball guy, and a decent manager on teams with little talent. If you've read any of his books you would be amazed at the method to his madness and just how well he knew the game of baseball and the art of hitting. Great talent, great mind, great guy...crazy kids -

Just wondering how many people sit at their desks and discuss the Bills while on the clock. I promise not to tell your bosses -
Talk coordinators all you want

He definately has a great burst...but that burst dies soon as he meets contact. Without enough recovery speed to get back into a play he's basically useless on plays that run around him. Matched with his inability to handle double teams past initial contact makes him useless in a 3-4 -

I think that too, but I didnt want to be cruicified -
cool if thats the case...once we get the gm's set...give about a week to wheel and deal.

I'd do all 7, but 3 should be enough...have you thought about allowing trading up and down at all?

I agree whole heartedly with your first post...its always nice to read a thread that doesn't imply impending doom in our future. As for the 3-4...I'm a major advocate of this style of defense. I think our LB core of Spikes-Crowell-Fletcher-Posey could be a bigtime threat. Posey, who has been incorrectly used in our past 4-3 defenses would get the chance to prove why he was picked up from the Texans where he flourished in the 3-4. Crowell is a playmaker who would definately compliment and support Spikes coming off his injury. The only problem I have with the 3-4 and this team is I dont believe our DL could handle it. The lack of size in our defensive front would get swallowed up quickly by opposing OLs...just like we saw this year with a 4 man front. Sam Adams is a bit too slow to be really productive as a NT, but I have a feeling his days are numbered in Buffalo anyways. If the Bills are serious about making the switch to the 3-4, I would highly recommend that we take Mario Williams or Haloti Ngata with the first pick. Williams has the size and speed to still be an effective pass rusher out of the 3-4 and Ngata has played NT throughout his college career. Also, an alternative to the 3-4 that I wouldn't mind seeing or at least experimenting with during training camp is the 3-3-5 bandit defense. While it is similar to the 3-4, instead of having 4 established LBs on the field there are 3 set LBs 4 set DBs and a roving bandit which is typically a SS or a very fast LB. the bandits job is typically to blitz or provide cover for another blitzing player. I think Milloy would fill the position of bandit nicely. Just a thought of mine. -
As much as I like ryan fitzpatrick, and I really think he could be a solid QB in a few years (remember Marc Bulger was a 3rd stringer for 3 years before getting a chance to shine) this is by far one the dumbest trade proposals I've read on this board...why on earth would you give up a 1st round QB with 2 years of NFL experience (albeit one was on the IR) for a 3rd round pick and an Undrafted QB with one season under his belt? The hell with Kelly Holcomb...the longer he starts the longer the Bills will suffer. He is not a starting QB in the NFL...if he was he would have proved it by now. If Buffalo were to give up on JP, they need to get a solid choice at QB who can start now and is on the right side of 30.

I'll be one...lets see, who needs to be rebuilt...give me Houston or the Jests

Of course they want to cancel it...it'll free up a time slot for Fox's new cant miss reality show, "Cooking with B-List Celebrities on a Hedonistic Island owned by Paris Hilton" Apparently its a new show that takes 5 star chefs and teams them with a celebrity whose last primetime television appearence was prior to 1997. They are then sent to a tropical island owned by slut extrodinare Paris Hilton where they must cook the best tasting dish while wearing only the clothes the stork gave them...watch out for those pesky grease burns! Seriously though, television has lost all its originality and the shows that are actually worth watching usually are cancelled too soon for the crap like Survivor, Simple Life, etc. -
