  1. Good read!

I agree with what he said about whether soccer has finally taken off in this country, too. I believe it has, but that being said, THIS is what it looks like! lol It's having the country paying attention to what our team does in the WC, it's having a national soccer league still growing after 15 years or so in existence, it's having our players getting more playing time and recognition abroad, it's ESPN broadcasting every WC match, champions league final, and some of the best club matches from the EPL in glorious HD every year, etc, etc. If it never got any bigger than this, I'd be happy as heck! I feel like I get plenty of soccer coverage. I know where to find what I want to watch, I know where to go when I want to talk about it, and I think it'll stay that way for a long time. If it grows from here, then great! But I'd say the sport is quite healthy right now, and with a very promising future.

Agreed. Absolutely. If I get to watch the important Champions League games, the Euro Cup and World Cup in HD, I'm pretty happy with the level of interest in the USA. Now I do remember having to watch some qualifying games on Telemundo 2 or Univision 2 so maybe I'd like a little more growth. But overall I'm relatively satisfied.

I was away for the holiday and couldn't watch any of the games. But I did DVR the Germany-Argentina match and watched it last night even though I knew the outcome. I have to say I'm sure glad the Argentinians (or is it Argentines?) are gone. I couldn't stand the way they were protesting every call, every perceived injustice, and even outright faked injustices. And with such vehemence. I don't know how the ref didn't start carding players left and right. Adios.

I'm not sure what Bill Simmons is talking about with no Jumbotrons. Wasn't that a big issue with the Mexico-Argentina offsides call being replayed on the Jumbotron?

Otherwise a very good article. But I have not grown accustomed to vuvuzelas as much as ESPN/ABC has made the necessary accommodations. I thought they were way worse at the Confed Cup last year. I don't know if it is better sound insulation in the booths, or better noise filters, or both, but I haven't minded it as much. However, if I was in the arena where there is no sound insulation or noise filters, I would probably been jailed for "hooliganism" by now for administering severe beatings with said vuvuzelas.

And I sure enjoyed the comparison of English fans to Buffalo Bills fans.

Finally, I wasn't expecting much from Germany after the loss of Ballack and the lackluster club seasons of Schweinstieger, Podolski and Klose. So I am definitely surprised (and obviously pleased).

    Forca Germania!

  2.

Don't let the door hit you on the ass on your way out. I hear Iran is nice this time of year. See ya!

I'm usually all for a difference of opinion. But yeah, when you disagree so fundamentally with this place that you disparage the Constitution then head elsewhere - Haiti, Cuba, wherever. Just go.

  3. I am looking to buy one. Best Buy doesn't carry this model. I have been going by CNET ratings so far and I am impressed. However, I can't physically test one out as it isn't available in any store in Buffalo. I was wondering if anyone had any input to offer on the TV. I dislike just depending on customer reviews as you never really know how many of them are posted by the manufacturer/rival.

Stereo Advantage carries the Panasonic line

  4. Answer:

    11 Socks.

No matter how you slice it, the highest REMAINDER (number of non-paired socks) you can have is THREE. So, with eleven socks, you will always have, at worst, 4 pair, plus 3 leftover.

My interpretation is all 4 pair need to be the same color. Not just any 4 pair. I could be wrong.

  5. I'd give them something...probably somewhat similar to what you said. Maybe like $50K...it depends on how close you are. I mean, the guy is probably going to think about his decision to drop out everyday for the rest of his life. Kinda F'd up to completely cut him out.

That really sucks for Frank and "the other member". Not only did they lose out on their share but they are also losing their jobs.

But hey, you gotta be in it to win it.

Anyhow, I know exactly where this place is. I spent several years visiting a fab shop just around the corner from this place on Benedict Rd West.

  6. ?????? on Puzzle 1. You stumped me here. How any of those 5 terms are related has me baffled.

Puzzle 2: 19. Worst case - pull the 4 red - then if you pull 15 more you'll either have 8 blue or 8 green

Puzzle 3: The Man in the Iron Mask, Arsenic and Old Lace, Ulee's Gold, Silver Streak, Platinum Blonde, Tin Cup

  7. Why it's called "Soccer"

To trace the origin of “soccer” we must go all the way back to 1863, and a meeting of gentlemen at a London pub, who congregated with the purpose of standardizing the rules of “football,” which was in its infant years as an organized sport but was growing rapidly in popularity.

Those assembled became the founding members of the Football Association (which still oversees the game in England to this day). And they decided to call their code Association Football, to differentiate it from Rugby Football.

A quirk of British culture is the permanent need to familiarize names by shortening them.... “They took the third, fourth and fifth letters of Association and called it SOCcer. So there you are.”

  8. except for Muscatel, which I have always found to have a good, piquant kick for the buck.

My personal preference was for Lux, but I found Palmolive had a nice, piquant after-dinner flavor - heady, but with just a touch of mellow smoothness

  9. Ok, let's think this one through...we've got Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, and Alberta

So, that leaves us with the Canadian domain code, which I'm pretty sure is .ca

    so, we have C-A-N-R-O-A-L

which anagrams to ummm...Car Loan? That doesn't seem quite right, but it's the only thing I can think of.

Ditto - I came up with the same

  10. Keep in mind that he still has $750MM himself with the potential to earn much more. At some point it is no longer about the money as he clearly has more than enough. Therefore, you can assume that until it all started crashing down around him he was enjoying the best of all situations - money, a wife, kids, fame and strange meow.

Personally it is a credit to both of them that they are looking to shut down the circus aspect of the whole situation for their kids. They will both live very well and his kids have a chance at a somewhat "normal" life.

Right. I feel bad for him. He must be poor now.

  11. Rare win? Here is two recent-we won the Confederation Cup in 2009 by beating Spain 2-0 (only international loss for Spain in 77 games). And we beat Portugal when they were ranked #1 in the world. This team can compete with any team and will only bet better. Niche sports with niche athletes? Not many athletes are as marketable then Shawn White, if any. Cricket and Rugby are two of the biggest sports in the world- and those smaller countries athetes are drawing off the same pool of athletes as the soccer team. Donovan, Bradley, and Davies are world class athletes. I think you underestimate the growth of soccer in this country. We will see, cheers

First of all, we did not win the Confed Cup. We lost. Brazil won. We couldn't hold on to a 2-0 lead.

Secondly, I doubt Shawn White is in the Top 50 in the US in earnings including endorsements - and almost unknown worldwide. But this is getting way off the topic of the future of the USMNT.

Now Donovan, Bradley and Davies are all solid players, and may even be good enough to make Brazil's roster, but none probably crack the starting lineup.

Finally on the rest: meh. We beat Spain in a tournament that noone cares about. And we beat Portugal in a group stage match. Besides, I would put Portugal a little below an elite team. They have never won a World Cup nor a European Championship.

We did play a hell of a game against Germany that year and deserved to win. But that would've gone more in the occasional win category. We played Italy to a draw but again that was a group stage match. Hell - we weren't even favored to beat Ghana - it was even money in both the sportsbooks I checked.

I think you underestimate what it will take to reach the next tier.

But I do hope I'm wrong.
