  1. Unfortunately I'm brutal at word puzzles. Went past my 10 min goof-off allowance and hit 15 min before giving up on this one. Below are some of my guesses if they help anyone, but I couldn't even get these 6 to mesh so they probably ain't right:

    Den - CAVE?

    Assistant - AIDE?

    Paid Players - PROS?

    Hint - CLUE?

    Scoundrels - ?

    Coil of Rope - ?

    Bloke - MATE?

Gets by, with "out" - ?

    Cone Tree - PINE?

    PC Command - ?

  2. Your thread title has me thinking there might be more to it, but I'm not seeing it.

There is more to it. My answer is:

    2 min (1+2 cross)

    +

    1 min (1 goes back)

    +

    10 min (5+10 cross)

    +

    2 min (2 goes back)

    +

    2 min (1+2 cross)

    --------

    17 min

  3. Hey, thats my line....

I was not aware of that. But it is very appropriate:

But none of the people inside had the opportunity to personally thank Lucas. Once everyone was safely out of the home, Lucas jumped back onto the bus and finished his route.

"I knew I had to be at the Victory Center," Lucas said. "People have got to go to work. That's what we do."

  4. 2. 20 ?

    #2 is:

    18

Each of the 9 boys got 1 toy fixed in 9 minutes. So the extra boy (#10) would fix one extra toy (#10) in the same 9 minutes. Thus 20 toys would be double that time or 18 minutes

#1 was tough for me. But hearing them read aloud made it easier than reading the words aloud myself. I went to Google Translate, translated from English to English, then hit the little "Listen to this translation" button. <example 1>

  5. Congrats to Spain...

A team the USA beat last year in the Confederations Cup.

We can play with the best...

    2014...USA !!!

Meh - the Confed Cup is like the third place game on Sat. Or a friendly. You like to win but you don't want to get anyone hurt. You rarely see hard fouls. Nor too physical play on defense. It's a very different game than the brutal hard fought game you saw yesterday.

  6. Ohh, I love the math ones. Lets see:

    v = velocity of stairs in steps/second

Knowing the people move at 1 step/sec,

    Down guy covers: 24 = h - v · 24 or h = 24 + 24v

    Up guy: 120 = h + v · 120 or h = 120 - 120v

Setting h equal to each other and solving for v:

    v = 2/3 steps/sec

    Plugging back into first eq:

    h = 40 steps

    And back to #1:

    1. Famous Nurse = Florence Nightingale

    2. Noteworthy Astronaut = Neil Armstrong

    3. Mayor Billionaire = Michael Bloomberg

    4. Played Bond = Pierce Brosnan

    5. Resigned Notoriously - Richard Nixon

    6. Generated Ballets - (beats me)

    7. Fettered Cuba? - Fidel Castro

    8. Created Drood - (what/who is Drood?)

  7. I didn't realize or remember that the first soccer game I ever watched was the first time the World Cup used penalty kicks to decide the winner - 1982. I thought it was the most ridiculous thing I ever saw in sports, which had previously been a few minutes earlier seeing the whole injury time thing.

So, what did they do before using the PK shootout?

My earliest memory of the World Cup was also 1982. I did not watch it. But I do remember the nightly news showing all the Italians going crazy in Boston's North End.

I never really watched the World Cup until we hosted in 1994 but have been watching feverently since.

  8. TODAY:

    1.

Fill in the blanks with consonants to complete the 13-letter word below:

    _ I _ _ OO _ _ A _ I _ _

    2.

Use all the words below to form a chain in which each word links to next to create a common compound (or hyphenated) word or phrase. The chain starts with FIRE and links to CRACKER to make FIRECRACKER. Then CRACKER links to another word and so on. The chain comes full circle, ending with FIRE.

    FIRE

    CRACKER

    ABOUT

    BOOK

    RABBIT

    FAIR

    DOUBLE

    EXCHANGE

    WALK

    BOARD

    FACE

    CARD

    BODY

    PUNCH

    JACK

    CROSS

    STUDENT

    Got #2:

    FIRE-CRACKER-JACK-RABBIT-PUNCH-CARD-BOARD-WALK-ABOUT-FACE-BOOK-FAIR-EXCHANGE-STUDENT-BODY-DOUBLE-CROSS-FIRE

    Still working on #1
