Like any website which gets more hits than it is scaled for it is going have issues but you so rarely get that many visitors that it makes no sense to spend all that money on hardware and infrastructure.

There are also sites where you can trade gift cards. It does not work if they are out of business but otherwise it does. Of course you could sell them on ebay - seen a number of closed store doors items. If you complain they will say it was not posted as valid and you could have bought them for collector value. I agree about gift cards in general; a racket unless you get them for free or at least a discount.

It has been going on for a long time but now brick and mortar places are trying to get into it. Most have been trying to disguise this as "membership fees" and "prizes" but more and more are getting more aggressive in attempt to find new fish. Some places have "free to join for fun" but soon you realize that those you are competing against have advantage since with paid membership have extra benefits and the "free to join for fun"is just a lure.
