The proper, balanced thing would have been for the president to not to hitch his controversial wagon to any particular drug in the first place because it was nothing but a politically-motivated gamble when he did so. That single action caused all of this controversy. He had no actual scientific reason to do so, only anecdotal evidence that made sense to him. It was totally irresponsible, anti-intellectual and extremely ignorant, which is likely why his base latched onto it like rabid dogs.
