At first glance, most of that sounds pretty good. -

Tea Party and their effect on the elections
Gene Frenkle replied to Magox's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I'm more bitter about how the past couple of years have gone than who won the midterms. Congress has been a joke ever since the Dems took over, so change was needed. I don't agree with a lot of what the Tea Party is about, but there are some solid candidates within their ranks it seems. I like some of what some of them are saying. Now show me it wasn't all just BS and politics. You've got the chance, now do something to turn it all around. That's not bitter, though it does depend on politicians living up to their hype, which doesn't happen too often. At times like this, it occurs to me that this two (one) party system of ours simply cycles between one side and the other, back and forth. This seems to almost always be driven by incompetence on the other side of the aisle, drawing the independents and non-die-hard partisans. Of course, that doesn't apply to you. -
Tea Party and their effect on the elections

Maybe. They have all this newfound "hope" and see all this imminent "change" because of the midterms. Sounds familiar (how ironic). Reality will likely just be more of the same. But it was a good win for the "team". -

People should not be penalized for telling the truth. When liberals worry about peoples' feelings they're pu$$ys. When they say something true but unpopular like this they're elitist. I'll just add, and this is not in reference to DC Tom or Magox, but retards spewing pop psychology is sooooooo boring. -
I always picture most of the wingnuts here as gay black women. With lots of guns.

Good, fewer whackos in the press on either side is an improvement.

It doesn't need to be a subjective thing. What are the current demographics for voters who identify themselves as Republican? I don't know the numbers, but that would be as clear as it gets.

BTW, congratulations to all you homo Republicans out there. You've come a long way, baby!

Tea Party and their effect on the elections

WTH is wrong with that statement? Why is education demonized by a certain section of our society? Jealousy? Ignorance? Propaganda? Oh, but it's ok to be educated if you're a "Republican". Maybe it's refreshing - I can't really decide. Either way, it's good to see some candidates on the Right who don't feel the need to pander (too much) to buffoons and fundamentalists. -

All this over a redundant comment meant to feed into the "master dodger" thing? Are you people so in need of validation? I don't think you're qualified to make assumptions about what I think or how I form my opinions. IMO, the "early" Tea Party had a sizable amount of irrationally angry white folks shouting down public officials in town hall meetings, mostly because they were scared of a black man in the White House. Can I support that with absolute facts? Nope, that's just my impression of how things went down and that's why I qualify it as an opinion. It's also my opinion that they're becoming less like that as they become more relevant, and that's a good thing. You don't have to agree with or like both or either of those opinions. I appreciate the South Park reference, at least. -

You're so oppressed! I disagree. Every time this comes up, it's all about the condescending elitists that these liberal colleges produce. Are you saying that's propaganda? -

We can differ on our opinion of how and why it may have started, but what I said is: It's hard to dislike the apparent intelligence of some of the candidates they've put up. Edit: To play devil's advocate, what makes these Ivy League and otherwise educated Tea Party candidates any less "elite" than the "elitist liberals" commonly demonized by the right? LOL, I was playing your game. My opinion is mine and I'll leave it at that. -

It's a ridiculous question because the "rise of the Tea Party" and why people might think those things is so well documented. Your question, however is much better. My opinion on this matter is based on what I've seen, heard and thought. Nice theory. 10X is a lot for what your betting, no? Maybe you're just looking for an out. The free market is not racist, but many people are. The faster the Tea Party evolves into what you're talking about, the better. -

Just my opinion. I know you were paying attention and have your own obviously intelligent, well-thought-out opinions, but here you go: Tea Party Racism, Bigotry and Extremism -
How many closeted gay-bashing Republican Senators and Congressmen have we seen outed in some scandal over the years? How many are never outed? I think you're seeing a combination of "gayness" becoming more accepted and mainstream and a movement of the Right away from its Christian Fundamentalist base - finally. Maybe people have no more control over being left or right than they have over being straight or gay.

I think that when the "movement" started, the negative characterization was fair, but that seems to be changing. As more moderates and independents join, the racism, bigotry and extremism becomes more diluted and in line with the levels found in any random group. If they want to grow their ranks further and gain more respect with independents and liberals, they should move away from fundamentalist leaders like Sarah Palin and truly focus on America's economy and other issues that actually have to do with government. It's hard to dislike the apparent intelligence of some of the candidates they've put up. Political momentum and moderate success are one thing. We'll soon see what they do with it. -
