Gregg Easterbrook on the Watkins Pick
1B4IDie replied to quinnearlysghost88's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'll give you TD but that's a decade ago. Just because you write "win-now" next to a move it doesn't mean it was a "win now" move and more importantly none of the post TD moves looked like they would actually help them "win-now" To me this looks like "win-now" moves that can have a W effect on the field. -
You can disagree all you want but Brees spreads the Ball around. Cooks has no shot to be the most productive rookie WR and inturn no shot at OROY but hey a boy can dream.

Gregg Easterbrook on the Watkins Pick

And that is the bottom. If the Bills make the playoffs and Watkins is on IR all season. (Knock on wood) the trade still works out Trade Value wise. One Bills Drive is all in for 2014. I don't know the last time I have ever seen that. I mean seriously, I can't remember when I knew without a shadow of a doubt that the front office was trying to win now and not "Build for the future". Now its up to Morrone to get the players prepared for 2014. It could blow up in their face but atleast they're trying to do something different to win now. Everyone knows that EJ is the Grenade Pin. Most, me included, don't think he can do it but that doesn't mean I'm going to **** on him for trying. If EJ is not the man then Whaley will be shown the door by new ownership (which clearly is a mistake imo) The good news though is with Watkins, Williams, Woods, CJ, and Bryce Brown and a line of Cordy Glenn, Kouandjio, Wood most Free Agent QBs would love to join the team in 2015. If Bradford gets tossed aside, or Kirk Cousins gets free they may see that the Bills are built to win now. They just need a QB. That to me is the worst case scenario in 2015. Winston is going #1 overall no matter how many crab cakes he steals and Marriato isn't guaranteed to be any better than EJ. This team couldn't get the 1st overall pick if it tried. So I don't really believe the 2015 1st would have put the Bills in a position to draft a QB anyway. Just win baby. -
The Artice is 100% true. If the Bills use Watkins exactly like Clemson used Watkins then he will not have the same stats. There is no arguing with that statement. However it is an asinine premise. Obviously Watkins will be used differently and will not catch as many passes behind the line of scrimmage. This is true: "This is why Buffalo continues to miss the postseason. Big resources are used on players who turn out to be adequate, but not great. Watkins and Manuel have to make each other great, but it's going to take much more than dozens of bubble screens to get there in the NFL." Again no one in their sane mind would think that Buffalo is just going to throw more bubble screens with Watkins and that is it. Buffalo is everyone's favorite whipping boy.

Yeah I know. I'm not even going to bother arguing the "rankings" just roll my eyes in that general direction. But just taking it at face value I don't think the rankings show a bad Bills team in comparison to other NFL teams.
-
Its actually not bad. You want yellow and above. Its a team game. So if your worst starter is considered "average" as a team you have got to be significantly above average. For Example the Bills defense would be considered better than the Ravens in PFF's chart: https://www.profootb...ltimore-ravens/ The Ravens have 1 below average player and zero elites (how Ngata is not elite I don't know) The Patriots chart is not out but I can't imagine their defensive chart would look very good. https://www.profootb...4-depth-charts/

Gregg Easterbrook on the Watkins Pick

If you're going bring up hypotheticals be more specific. Who could the Bills have gotten that is just as good as Watkins without giving up the 2015 1st? We know the players selected. We know that the Browns said they had Watkins on their card for the 4th overall pick. So With Watkins at #4 to the Browns and Mike Evans gone at #7. Who is your pick at #9? Who is the pick at #41? The Bills got two of the best players in the draft in Watkins and Kuoandjio. The ceiling on Watkins and Kuoandjio's potential is exponentially higher imo than anyother Tackle WR combo that was available. We also know the draft points breakdown. If the Bills pick in the 20s then they actually make out on the trade with Cleveland. The 2015 first round pick isn't going to help the Bills make the Playoffs in 2014. Sammy Watkins and Kuandjio do have a chance to help the Bills make the playoffs in 2014. OBD is trying to break this playoff drought it reflects poorly on anyone that tries to second guess a front office that is clearly making bold moves to win now. But if you're going to second guess them be more specific in your second guess. Make a statement. Its easy to sit on the sidelines and criticise without saying anything specific. "we could have conceivably drafted a good OT and WR in the first two rounds" The fact is the Bills did but who specifically are you suggested alternatives? -
So you're saying that Kelvin Benjamin being the primary receiving option for Cam Newton will see less Balls than Cooks will see with Kenny Stills, Colston, and Jimmy Graham as established starters not to mention Nick Toon with another year with the playbook and Robert Meachum? The one thing we all know about Brees is that his only favorite target is the open man. So Cooks will get some balls when he gets open but not the Balls that Watkins, Mike Evans, and Kelvin Benjamin are in line to get not to mention that if one of the QBs pops and actually plays well they get the OROY by default of being a QB. On top of that if there is a rookie 1000+ yard 10+ yard RB they'll probably be inline for OROY over a 900 yard WR. There really isn't a logical counter argument and we can revisit this silly argument in January. Cooks doesn't have a chance of being OROY. Not a chance. He isn't on the short list or the long list for OROY. Not Gonna happen.

Agreed you get respect in the locker room when you do it in practice and on the field of play. You got to like that attitude. He already uses the Bills in the first person plural "We" Personally, I don’t know why we haven’t been a winning team, but I’m a winner Instead of the third person "The Bills." Where players distance their identification from the team. Its nit picky but I actually use that in my team at work. When you start to hear employees say, unconsciously "We need to do . . ." instead of "The company needs to do . . . " you can see that they have internalized their role. This is the start of a good attitude. He hasn't proved it on the field but this is the start of something good.

Gregg Easterbrook on the Watkins Pick

When you use the non-word, irregardless, you are embracing your Buffalo roots. Lets not get persnickety fellas. Irregardless the Bills start on the road in Chicago. It will be a tough game because of the opening weekend atmosphere. But they have an aging Charles Tillman and a Rookie Kyle Fuller. Plus the Bears need to figure out what to do with Jared Allen and Lamar Houston. It usually takes longer for defenses to gel. Since most of the offense is returning in Buffalo. They Bills will likely have only 3 new starters and a familiar playbook Watkins, Kuoandjio and Richardson\Chris Williams. Maybe the Bills can catch the Bears new defense off guard. They'll try to single Woods\Williams or Watkins on Jennings or Fuller and make them prove they can cover. Can't wait! -
Because it's a horrible pick. The Saints have too many options for Cooks to put up Significant numbers and win the OROY popularity contest. The Saints redshirt their WRs most years anyway. Although that's not likely with Cooks, he still won't see enough balls to win OROY.

Before reading this I said I feel like the Bills got two Top 10 caliber players in the 2014 draft. Now I definitely know they got two top 10 caliber players. Plus he works out with chains! http://www.buffalobills.com/photos/photo-gallery/Bills-offseason-weightlifting/1bfc2adb-a085-4faa-a5a8-f1a9fe88f63f?campaign=fb_buf_pg#b9233941-23b1-496c-9c19-64e2ef3e7432

Huh? Especially with it being 5 o'clock somewhere.

Jadaveon Clowney OLB Texans - I know its cool to look for alternatives but he is going to contribute big time right away. Kelvin Benjamin WR Carolina. I say this and still love the Watkins pick. I just think the best use of Watkins is a homerunner hitter and won't get the same numbers that Kelvin Benjamin could get with only Greg Olsen to share balls. Ebron has no shot. He won't even lead Det's TEs in receptions. Put the crack down.

What could they have done in the draft
1B4IDie replied to Luxy312's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The rest available at #9 were as good as anyone available at #20 and no one would have been willing to trade up to draft any of those guys. Staying at #9 would be more of the same and making due with what is given to you. Nothing special. -
Bryan Orakpo says good luck in your future endeavors. Worst pick ever.

Gregg Easterbrook on the Watkins Pick
1B4IDie replied to quinnearlysghost88's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I mean usually there are few moves where you're like ouch not so sure about that but right now on paper these are strong aggressive moves that can add more Ws to the team. (Both figuratively and figuratively??) People have gotten their panties in a bunch about letting Byrd walk and Flipping Stevie Johnson for Bryce Brown. But those two players were key figures in the perpetual 6-10 teams. I think Watkins, Williams, Bryce Brown, Spikes, Preston, and Kuoandjio can get to 6-10 just fine and maybe even flip that to 10-6 if everything gels. I can't wait for September for a change. -

I think Luxury was the common CJ narrative by "experts". I'm not sure where you were going with that comment too. -
What could they have done in the draft
1B4IDie replied to Luxy312's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Kuoandjio was regarded as a first rounder this time last year; Top 10 pick. He fell due to poor play and a concern that he has an arthritic knee. Well Dr. James Andrews went out of his way to write a letter to all 32 teams saying Kuoandjio's knee is fine. That seems like a very strange thing for the world's foremost expect on NFL knee's to do if it were in any way untrue. In my mind the Bills got two Top 10 picks in 2014. Watkins and Kuoandjio, prior to the draft a Watkins Kuoandjio draft seemed outlandish and too good to be true well know if is reality. I don't understand anything other than a reaction of "OMG the Bills just won the 2014 draft." And that is before they got a falling Cyril Richardson who was regarded as an easy 3rd rounder in February. The biggest needs were RT, Run Stuffing LBs, LG. If Kuoandjo, Preston, and Richardson can all play well in 2014 you just checked off three top needs on the team. As far as the trade up. OBD is taking a risk. Demitroff summed up his trade for JJ and Bills trade for Watkins by saying, to paraphrase, this a league of takers if you sit back and wait for what is given to you, you will never win. The Bills have been sitting back and making due with what has been given to them for awhile now. They went out and took Watkins, Mike Williams, and Bryce Brown. Watkins is a player you can lineup anywhere on the field Outside, inside even take handoffs and possible score. Watkins is not the Megatron #1 that will line up in the same place most of the time. Watkins will be motioned and moved everywhere to get a mismatch. It will be Williams that will be lined up Outside as the X and Woods as the Y with Watkins used as the new style "offensive weapon". This is going to make fans uneasy, but it doesn't matter, if he is able to consistently get double digit TDs. As far as staying at #9 Ebron is not a special tight end he is not freakishly tall, fast, or has great hands. I never understood the hype. That would have been wasting the 2014 #9 overall pick. Leewan's off the field might have been the issue. He is a plug and play RT but do you want Jerry !@#$ing Sullivan righting an article about how Lewan threatened to rape a young woman that thought she was raped again? It's just a bad PR move when you can get a RT in the second. The rest available at #9 were as good as anyone available at #20 and no one would have been willing to trade up to draft any of those guys. Staying at #9 would be more of the same and making due with what is given to you. Nothing special. It's a gamble and we know the points play out that the Bills win the trade if the Bills pick in the 20s. More importantly the Bills win because they are trying to win and win now and not just sitting back and making due with what they are given. They're not hoping someone falls to them in the 2015 draft in May 2014. They are trying to win now. Slow and steady gets stepped on in the NFL. -
Bills Roster Talent NOT COUNTING QB
1B4IDie replied to Doug Flutie Band's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Nice work. I like it and its relevant. Thank you. -
He was the hyped "Next" TE but he never really made it there. He never lived up to the hype BUT he is still relatively young and will have every opportunity to show and prove in camp. To break down the "lack" of a TE is pretty easy. They all went super early. At this point in time I would not trade Kuoandjio for Ebron or Amaro so the bills made the right pick. Then when the Third came around Ebron, Amaro, Austin S-J, Niklas, and Fiedorowicz were all gone. And there was a pretty significant drop off to Rogers/Gilmore/Lynch; at that point so why bother drafting one. The Potential of Moeaki is greater than or equal to Rogers. Interestingly enough Tampa Bay got my Boner-Ville combo of Mike Evans/Austin Seferian-Jenkins. That will be fun to watch.

This is not true.

Bills Roster Talent NOT COUNTING QB

Why would you list this in order of weakness, why not strength? Not to mention what does this have to do with comparing the position groups to the rest of the NFL? -
Bills Roster Talent NOT COUNTING QB
1B4IDie replied to Doug Flutie Band's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
When have the Bills ever won the offseason before? And the talent on the Roster on 2008 was a laughing stock level of talent. http://m.pfref.com/m?p=XXteamsXXbufXX2008_roster.htm&t=all_games_played_team The 2014 roster has the best defensive in the NFL (3/4 pro bowlers) and top 3 RBBC in the NFL. Arguments can be made for Top 5 CB group. Defensive ROY or second place ROY depending on which group of journalists you ask. That's not getting into speculation of 2014 additions. If Watkins and Williams gel then you have to say Easily top 10 WR group and if Kuoandjio can lock down RT better than average O line and Corey Williams and Aaron Williams at safety could be much better than average. You can argue that the 2008 roster was the worst at several position groups O-line and LB in particular. The roster has changed over and on paper is littered with talent up and down. It's up to Marrone to get the to gel and make it happen on the field.
