Arian Foster There are impactful free agents out there, but to your point they're additions to a team not building blocks.
  2. IMO this is a 2012 discussion. It's doubtful players will be clamoring to come here next year. There are 2 types of free agents that are more likely to cone in Buffalo a declining pass rush specialist looking for 1 more contract or mid tier pass rush specialist that think with more PT they can prove a higher value (Kiwaki Mitchell-esque). A free agent LB knows they will walk in and start day 1 there is almost competition or depth. The rest will probably continue to shy away as Nix/Gailey/Fitz is still an unknown quality. Also don't think that the players dont talk. The NFLPA is a fraternity. Most were all Highly regarded High School players and had regional events where they met. They all played college ball and know other players through college. The degree of separation is more like 1 or 2. If a free agent is thinking about Buffalo they'll get ahold of a current player and ask. I'm guessing DJ hasn't highly regarded. The current players seem to enjoy this team even though they are losing so maybe they put in a good word and more importantly help recruit. If the Bills improve to 8-8 in 2012 or break the .500 mark, the current players like the environment, and Ralph opens up the wallet the Bills will be able to add a few key pieces. However many people pointed this out earlier you don't build a team through Free Agency. Exhibit A. Washington Redskins. Not to mention the Bills on thier history had very few important free agent signings. Free agency is good to add finishing touches not a foundation of a winner.
  3. Good assessment. With Chan's offense it seems like you can pick up a WR off the street and they could be productive, or the Bills just got really lucky with these crop of WRs. However drafting a Play Making TE or WR in 2012 might be a good idea.
  4. If the Bills took AJ Green Fans' heads would explode, and Sullivan would have another mind numbing "Luxury" rant, however by 2012 there would be more Green jerseys than Poz jerseys in the stands. The guy is a playmaker and and Chan would get him the ball to make plays. However I think adding a stud TE or stud WR is more of a 2012 goal. I believe adding NFL ready pass rushers and run stuffers would lead to more Ws in 2011. AJ green might add more excitement and is almost as NFL ready as Dez Bryant but the defense is lacking much more than the London Fletcher lead Rams defense or the Jamal Lewis led Ravens offense. Not to mention if someone like Bowers, Fairley, or Dareus is there when you pick. It would be hard to pass on these guys especially when they represent a very difficult to find position of need. 6'2"+ 290-320+ athletic guys with big motors don't grow on trees, where as WRs are just a huge crap shot and take years to develop. However AJ Green looks to be a primetime stud that is more NFL ready than other WR prospects. If you go 4 wide, with Roscoe, Evans, Stevie, and Green in 2011 that would give D-COs nightmares. This team needs to connect on a hail marry pass with the 2011 first round pick, an impact D-Line man is the way to go imo. A team that is more complete and needs to add play makers might be tempted to trade up for AJ green which could work out well for the Bills imo.
  5. No one seems to have an answer. I did find this: https://sportsdelve.wordpress.com/2010/11/09/a-historical-look-at-the-frequency-of-nfl-overtime-game/ In 2002 there were 25 OT games the most in NFL history.
  6. Don't get me wrong, by the tail of tape and his 2009 performance against weak teams he looks great. However the risk is just too great for my liking when you have much more of a sure thing with Bowers or Fairley. If he falls, to the second, which is more likely than being taken in the top 10 if you look at Dez Bryant it would be a freaking steal. But the Bills can't afford to blow another 1st round pick. Plus Nix drafted only Captain's from their collegiate teams in 2010, that can't be by coincidence. Nix is going to weigh the character issues pretty heavily, imo.
  7. Quinn is a 1 year wonder because he doesn't have a second year of impressive stats. He was suspended for what could have been his second impressive year or a disappointed year, no one knows; he got 2 sacks in 2008. He plays in the ACC, not the SEC and I don't know what Maybin has to do with Robert Quinn they are two different people. he got ALL of his 11 sacks and 33 of his tackles; against Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Florida State, Miami, Connecticut, and Georgia Tech (6 games), he got a mere 19 tackles and 0 sacks! That is a staggering dispersion of stats between teams he played! He made absolutely no impact in games against good teams, yet he dominated against bad teams. http://player-rater.blogspot.com/2010/09/robert-quinn-2011-draft-scouting-report.html
  8. Quoting the Pittsburgh media, why don't you just jump on the Pittsburgh wagon, its crowded but its a much easier than being a Bills fan. The 1986 Buffalo Bills were 4-12 with 7 losses under 5 points. The 2010 Buffalo Bills are 2-9 with 5 losses by 5 points or less. There are some similarities but more importantly the team is playing well and has much more potential than the DJ system.
  9. It sounded like he asked how to run a 4-3 and yes it is OK for a rookie D-Co to ask for help. It is not OK for a rookie D-Co to not ask for help and continue to fail.
  10. Quinn is the one year wonder, that only got sacks against lesser opponents in a horribly weak conference. He is a scary prospect but is an athletic and the right size to play OLB. The risk is too high for my liking. Teams can run on us because we have practice squad quality LBs and DEs. Well Stroud is just getting old and losing his will to battle in the trenches he is not practice squad quality. Jeremy Beal and Mason Foster are both 4 year starters that appear IMO to be more NFL ready than many in the class. Nothing is guaranteed in the draft, but this does look like a good year to draft LBs in rounds 2-4.
  11. The League set the precedent that if you lead an all together straight laced career and you beat down a noted dirty player, and constant pest that most of the players in the NFL detest you will not be suspended. AJ has no history, what the commissioner has been consistent about is second chances. However there is a very steep escalation. Not to mention when was the last time you saw helmets off and punches thrown? Its very rare. So if James Harrison pulled this on Richie Incongnito Harrison would definitely be suspended because he has a history. If Patrick Willis pulled this on Richie Incongnito it'd probably be a fine, because Patrick Willis has been a clean stand up player. That is the precedent and it may not be 100% "fair" but sometimes people deserve to get their ass kicked legally on national television, this was the case last Sunday.
  12. I know we were joking in the bar Erik Flowers . . . err Mike Williams . . . I mean Aaron Maybin got held.
  13. I'd rather have Wade as a "consultant" for Edwards. Merriman and Maybin's careers are likely over. This team doesn't need dead weight. Maybin needs to gain 30-40 pounds to be relevant. He is a beanpole out there and a liability. He was only in for 3 plays last week, that were likely passing plays and he got pancaked on 2 of them partially allowing for a Roethlisburger's 18 yard stroll. Then he has held by Scott on the 3rd, Scott is a horrible tackle, we know this, against decent tackles he will be tossed to the ground. You can't put Maybin out there for more plays because any semi intelligent QB or O-Co would just run right at him. Achilles injuries used to be career killers prior to the 90s. Now for the few that have come back, Cadillac Williams being the only person to come back from 2 and came back in less than a year, its a 2 year injury until the strength and confidence is truly back. Merriman is on 3 years now. I'd rather hire Merriman as an assistant LB coach then give him a 4th year to come back. Those roster spots are better used with Jeremy Beal, Dontay Moch, Acho, Mason Foster, Wayne Daniels, Martez Wilson, or Akeem Ayers through the 2011 draft.
  14. I think the biggest difference is you can see the potential for wins in the system that Chan is putting in place. After Trent Edwards we were in every game until the 4th QTR & OT. They play hard and there is room to get better. Under the Dick the team had no direction on offense or defense and played "not to lose." Chan is playing to win, he is in it to win it and right now he is coming up short in the end. If you add a few more components to the team, like LBs that can tackle at the point of impact as well as make plays behind the line of scrimmage and improve the RT position, you can see how instead of coming up short the team can come out with a win. DJ's teams never had potential like this. I do NOT think the Kelly/Levy/Polian Fitz/Chan/Nix comparison is fair to either group. This team is different than 1986 in personal however it is no different in that this season is an opportunity for the new coaches and players to learn how to play to win instead of play to "not lose." Its Nix job to give Chan the players he needs to win. Maybe Fitz is the right player for the long term maybe not, but 1 thing is for sure, QB is not a dire position of need for 2011 anymore.
  15. However Buddy Ryan or Wade Philips didn't come out of the womb coaching. George Edwards is clearly not a great D-Co, however my respect for him ticked up a bit if he is realizing he is struggling and he consuled people in his network for help. Considering the better defensive fronts and blitzing schemes the last few weeks George Edwards may be learning too. I'm still not convinced he is a capable D-Co yet but it does appear that he is starting to make adjustments based on his personnel. This is George Edwards first stint as an NFL D-Co and he gets to learn and get better at his job just like anyone else on the team or in NFL history. Its up to him to prove he can handle the position. He was kind of naive in the beginning, thinking he can just make a switch to 3-4 overnight, now he appears to making do with the talent he has and running a scheme that better fits the players he has.
  16. I think Mason Foster and Beal are the most ready to start on Week1 LBs. Where Moch and Acho imo will need to be coached up where they can be an every down backer. Moch could speed rush right away but I don't know if he would be ready for coverages and run stuffing. Acho is an athlete but yeah he is a raw tweener with a high ceiling. If Foster, Beal, and Love were drafted by the Bills I would consider the draft a huge success that would lead to more Ws. With those 3 you get some talent at LB, and you probably lock down the RT. While a TE is nice to have, I don't think it would translate into more Ws right away. Adding playmakers to me is a 2012 priority. More LBs, a stud TE and or WR, and depth at O-line, maybe finally a Center or LG to move Wood to center in 2012. I say this and I have a soft spot for TEs, Metzelars, Butch Rolle, and McKeller were my favs. Kendricks is a beast but in general TEs take a couple years to develop. They have to learn pass blocking, run blocking and route running. Its a nice piece to have and something the Bills have a need for but if the decision is lock down RT or add a TE, I lock down RT. Either way adding Kendricks should give the Bills a great player for many years.
  17. Beal is rated all over the place, mostly late first to mid second. Definitely don't see him in the 3rd very often but this is assuming the #64 pick which isn't impossible. I like this draft too, However, this offense doesn't really need a TE, I'd rather take a Tackle in the second. 1. Jeremy Beal - DL/OLB - Oklahoma 2. Lance Kendricks - TE - Wisconsin 2. Dontay Moch - LB - Nevada 3. Sam Acho - DE - Texas 4. Kelvin Sheppard - LB - LSU 4. Clint Boling - OG/OT - Georgia 5. Greg Salas - WR - Hawaii 6. Devon Torrence - CB - Ohio State 7. Zach Hurd - OG - Connecticut Beal, Moch, Acho, Mason Foster, Wayne Daniels, Martez Wilson, Akeem Ayers are all primary targets in rounds 2-4. I'd be happy with 3 of those dudes. If Someone wants to trade up for AJ Green, Prince, or Patrick Peterson I'd be happy if the Bills took it, so they could get 4 of those dudes.
  18. During the game I think Solomon Wilcots said that George Edwards sat down with someone and discussed the differences between a 3-4, and 4-3, because George Edwards was so familiar with a 3-4. It sounded like he said Wade Phillips, no one in the bar could really hear the discussion. Did anyone hear that discussion? He could have said something completely different it was hard to hear in the crowded bar. George Edwards was Wade's LB coach in Dallas, did George give Wade a ring for some help now that Wade is sitting around on Sundays? The Defense has been blitzing more the last few weeks and showing different looks lately.
  19. I love Bowers, Beal, and Hightower! I would maybe think about Sam Acho or Wayne Daniels with #99 if they were there or with the Seattle 4th. That would give us another OLB. I have never heard of Terry Griffin or Elizabeth City State but I like 6'3" 340. That is really the key to all these mocks, if the coaching staff wants to continue the transition to a 3-4 they needs some LBs and depth at NT if you play Kyle and NT, although it seems to be a waste to have Kyle at NT when he is getting pressure and collapsing pockets at DT. Either way the long term D strategy is a question. I assume its a 3-4 long term but the Bills need about 5 more LBs to seriously consider this. Beal, Hightower & Daniels would be a great start at LB.
  20. What is the record for most OT games in a season by one team? The Bills have to already have the record for most OT losses in a season.
  21. What is crazy is that whodat's funny post is only a small exaggeration. I was thinking, who is that tall Saftey for about 0.5 seconds then I realized it was Maybin. Someone feed this guy. You know in the movie 7 where they strap the fat guy down and make him eat until he dies. Well the general idea is there, don't kill the guy but Maybin needs an extra 1500 calories a day above whatever he is eating, if you have to strap him down and force feed him so be it.
  22. Thanks.
  23. Actually this is a good point. We need a RT and Calloway was regarded as a good RT prospect. How could he have been worse than Cornell Green. He doesn't appear to be on the practice squad either. If anyone has a full run down of his PreSeason performance I would be interested. He must have been really really bad to get cut and not invited to the practice squad.
  24. NO MEANS NO!!!
