That post wasn't in response to you, but since you bring it up Kyle Williams is a little short, with short arms put perfect weight for a 4-3 DT, which is what he has been playing extremely well. We're not in a 3-4 all the time so you can't call him a NT, when he goes to the pro bowl it ill be DT. They are putting the Rockpile at 0, 1, 2, and 3 technique. Bayou Bill has a super high motor and is a special player. I don't disagree with the Utopian concept you're presenting. The greater point, is you have to make real choices with the real people, that will really be in the draft. When it comes down to making player personal decision, between Fairley and Bowers who are both beasts, scheme will have to come into the discussion at some point. But to your point Scheme will not be the only thing that is considered. If you draft Bowers, you're probably going to draft him with a Rush-Backer in 3-4 in mind, or a 4-3 DE. If you draft Fairly to play 3-4 DE in may not be the best use of the draft pick you can get some other big body later in the draft and use the opportunity to draft a player for a position that is more difficult to fill. Exactly. To San Jose's point, Kyle is a special player and is better suited for a 4-3. You put Kelsay Weakside (so he doesn't have to cover a TE), Fairley & Rockpile Kyle, and a DE (maybe Carrington, but with that line if you get someone that has a knack for pass rushing, you have a bad arsed line) It's going to take atleast the C and 2 Guards to block Bayou Bill and Fairley and they'd probably keep the RB in to block because one of those guys will beat a 1-1. That frees up 1 on 1 on the edge. It makes so much more sense, then trying to waste Kyle at NT and "Waste" Fairley at DE in 3-4 especially when we have 0.5 good LBs to play LB on the 2010 roster. However a player like Bowers is maybe Special, He may be one of the few players that can play with their hand down at DE and stand up some times at OLB. Which would help with the transition to 3-4 if thats what Chan & Edwards decide they still want to try to implement full time.

Get with the program, obviously if somehow the Bills have #1 they take Luck, we're moving past that unlikely event. What do the Bills do when they pick #5 and Luck is off of the board. What is your point? Bowers is smaller than Carrington. Carringtpn was drafted at 285. Thats about as small a 3-4 DE as you ideally want. Bowers is 275, and I said would need to bulk up to play 3-4 DE, a 3-4 DE is a bit of waste to draft so high. Which is still true. The idea of a 3-4 D-End is to be a space eater, run stuffer, and free up the LB Again what is your point?

I think you're giving too much credit to Fitzgibbons. It's a mixture of Chan's system and Fitzmagic. Have you ever watched a Stanford game? Boooooring. More dump of passes and screens than a high school game. It'd be like going back to the DJ era for offense. I'd like to see what Chan can do in 3 years. I like how he has this squad playing. The defense is just starting to congeal. It needs a few more LBs to be any good but the team no longer looks completely clueless. You can imagine a winning squad with a couple more playmakers on D. And if there are any adjustments it would be Edwards not Chan.

I no wen he gunna cach a pas, I meen he got a hole buch las yer. Bills nead moor tournovas so Fitzgibbons can get moor winns

Peter King givin the Bills a little lovin'

I am stupidly excited! And I echo that it's been a looooooong time I've been excited about watching a Bills team in Week 13 - 17. The additional needs posted are to win a Super Bowl. If we lock down the LBs and DEs we could make a playoff run. Adding the TE, WR and RT could take us deep into the playoffs and maybe all the way. -
I agree. It does defy logic. They would seriously have had a better result in the first rounds if they put a poll on tbd.com and had the fans decide. I doubt Maybin would have won an Orakpo, Oher, Maybin Poll. The working of the BB brass is just strange in general. I also learned how to pronounce his name "De-lama-Lear"

Get 'em Get 'em (LaVar Arrington voice) The last couple weeks I noticed Torbor making plays more often. The LBs are a joke but that youngster seemed to have a light go on recently; too bad. Yeah if we draft atleast 2 linebackers maybe 3 in the first 4 rounds of 2010 I'll be happy.

Mango is debunking the myth of Lee Evans in a sarcastic manor, and I applaud both his approach and intent. Having a Safety play 15-25 yards off the line of scrimmage on the same side as a receiver is not a major deterrent to throw to the receiver if the receiver is any good. There is a perception by many people that rolling a safety is like putting handcuffs on the receiver and the receiver could never make a play if there is safety is on their side of the field. Its kind of the safety's job to do that. What do you think they do against other teams beside the Bills? Do you think the Safety stands at the 50 and waits for someone to run near him? Lee Evans a good WR, not great and rolling a Safety to his side should have little effect to a true # 1 WR it also does not wipe the field clear of defenders for the other WRs. WRs still have to make plays to get open. Look at Stevie's drop, there is a corner and safety covering him, yet he still gets open. Why can't Lee do that?

More like #50 But I see your point.

Can you throw stuff at him too? I might have to book a flight for that.

Kyle Williams .... this guy needs a nickname
1B4IDie replied to truth on hold's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bayou Billy. Cause you know Bill is short for William and he is from the Bayou region of the country. I guaron'tee that is the winner. Kyle the One Man Pile is second. K-Will and K-Dub are too generic, there are probably 100s of people that go by those two monikers. You're on to something with Rockpile Kyle, except we would need to move back to Jefferson & Best for that to win, but I still like it. -
As a sidenote, there is an article that tries to associate the pay increase of NFL LBs with the decrease of Heavyweight boxers and in essence the death of boxing. Because of that article whenever I see Woodley, Harrison, Orakpo, and Willis I just can't help but imagine them as heavyweight boxers. If the NFL went away MMA would see an increase in gifted athletes training to become MMA fighters. I know that's irrelevant to the thread but semi interesting.

Why is he not a "#1" now?

I'm watching the Eagles vs Texans game. The Eagles know they're going to throw to Andre Johnson, plus Johnson is gimpy, yet he somehow gets wide open for big chunks of yardage. It's amazing.

Josh Freeman was drafted #17-2009 Mike Williams was drafted in the 4th round - 2010 Benn was drafted in the second round. - 2010 Blount - undrafted, signed from WW - 2010 It goes to show you don't have to bottom out to make good draft picks.

If the Bills were in the NFC west they would have clinched the division by now. The AFC East has been and will certainly remain the most difficult division in Football. The AFC North is no cakewalk either. We'll get to settle one of the discussion on the field 12/12/10 home against the Brownies. They had our number the last 3 times in a row. My wife's family are Browns fans I had to hear their **** for the last 3 years. I'm hoping we hang a beat down on them, that will settle this debate. I like that young Bucs team, I would trade Lee Evans, Stevie Johnson, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Freddie Jackson, and CJ spiller and pretty much the whole rest of the team for Josh Freeman, Mike Williams, Arelious Benn, Captain Grapefruit, Blount, and Caddi. The Bucs have a great young offensive core for the next few years. They are going to make some noise if they can lock down the D.

You might want to change your signature. The Brohm ship also sailed.

Jim, its probably too late to fight the Beast battle as well. If you want to fight against the use of an animalistic term, you might want to take up the fight against "manimal." I think "manimal" is just beginning to gain a foothold in player discussions, it might not be too late to take up that cause.

aaron maybin gets first sack against brett favre
1B4IDie replied to fairfaxbill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I wish he would get a SACK of fries and a bucket of wings from Duffy's every day after practice for the next month. That way he might be able to put on enough weight to actually make it on the field. -
This battle would be better fought in the 70's when cowboy culture had a glimpse of popularity and the term "stud" entered the American Lexicon. The effort to try and stop the use of this word has been put to pasture. The word "stud" won by many furlongs.

The problem is the difference between Fairley & Bowers is splitting hairs. So scheme is going to come in at some point. Bowers would have to bulk to play 5 technique in 3-4 and is almost too big to be an everydown OLB. Where Fairley isn't going to be an OLB but can be moved around the D-Line. Both players are beastly, both are nasty and both would inject some much needed talent on the Defense. But to your point, you don't pass on a naturally gifted football because of scheme. My point is when you ARE splitting hairs because the players are so talented scheme is one of those hairs to split. This is a good problem for the Bills to have because there is so much talent in this draft if the Bills get Fairely, Bowers or Really any of the guys listed by the OP the Bills will be in great shape. Bruce Smith played more than 20 years ago. The Refrigerator Perry was considered too big by Dikta when he was over 308. That would be a pip squeak now. Dikta would encourage the 340 that he was estimated to play at. The game gets Bigger & Faster every year. Not to mention drying to compare college players to one the biggest, meanest, baddest freaks of nature of all time is not fair to Bruce Smith or the college kid.

Did you know Cam Newton was ineligible
1B4IDie replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The NCAA and BCS both benefit from Cam Newton playing now that's the point. -
The guys you're quoting are freaks, they don't grow on trees. There aren't 32 in the world. Dwight Freeney is a freak he was drafted #11 for a reason and Robert Mathis was a DI-AA or whatever they call it now star that has Freeney on the other side to make him better, Elvis is just amazing for his height. Its not as simple as just drafting the best defensive player. When you draft a player its like drafting a clump of clay. Some are more molded then others. A guy you draft to mold into a NT isn't the same guy you draft as DE. And the guy you draft with a top 10 pick you want to be more molded for the NFL. By your opinion Bowers would be the guy you want he is the most versatile he would be a Jack or Rush Backer in a 3-4, or DE in a 4-3. Fairley or Dareus aren't as versatile they're going to have they're hand down 100% of the time and the type of Defensive System you plan on running is going to effect your draft position. A 3-4 DE is traditionally a Big Bodied run stuffer. You don't want to waste a top 10 pick on a guy with that skill set; a space-eater. A 10 top draft pick is better spent trying to find a lump of clay that is closer to the freaks you mentioned in your post. Thats why the system does matter. But you do have a point in that the Bills need to find the player that can best fit into the Rushbacker, Rover, Jack role in a 3-4. A Rushbacker can usually also play DE in a 4-3; thats kind of the point of 3-4, you don't know where that other rusher or is going to come from. The Rover and a huge NT is kinda of what makes a successful 3-4 a successful 3-4. An ideal sized, effective, Rushbacker is hard to find and worthy of a first round pick. Getting that player than can play DE or OLB will give the Bills the flexibility to run any system they want. (Which is what they were trying to with Keslay in the beginning but he is kind of the opposite of the freaks you brought up. He can play DE in a 4-3 but when you stand him at LB, he just gets exposed for his poor coverage ability.)

My Mom has us ranked as #1. Power Rankings have got to be the silliest thing in sports media, a medium that is filled with outlandish silliness.

Maybin had all the classic signs of a bust, I couldn't believe it when the Bills took him. Undersized, young, inexperienced, ran really fast at the combine. He even had Lavar Arrington as his mentor, LaVar is arguably a bust for his draft position. NO DEFENSIVE LINE PLAYERS RANKED HIGH IN THE 2011 DRAFT SHOULD BE COMPARED TO MAYBIN. The only one that could maybe be compared is Robert Quinn, for his 1 year wonder career, however there was mitigating circumstances because he was suspended or he would have has another year. Not to mention Robert Quinn has NFL size, and if you locked Maybin in a cage with Quinn and only 1 person was allowed out, Quinn would be the last man standing with very little effort. So can we just drop the Maybin comparisons. He was not an NFL quality player, it was clear to everyone except the Bills and Todd McShay lets move in this is mostly a new regime.
