    Honestly, I think this is just the beginning stages of Sawyers long con. In his flash back he said the first thing you need to pull off a long con is money, and a lot of it. This is true for the real world, but on the island there is no money. What is the one thing everybody wants, including the "others"? Guns. IMHO this is all stage one to con the "others".
