lol of course. And you know Shockey was so terrible, that before he got injured he was the giants leading receiver. Obviously his play was slipping, and the giants were a much better team without him. Who needs a te that averages over 60 receptions and 700 yards a season. Wn the Bills have Robert Royal, and scrubs who either weren't in the league, or bounced around between 4 different teams. Yeah Shockey is a loud mouth, but sans Jason Witten, there might not be a better "All Around" te in the game.

Derrick Harvey - late observation?
MartyBall4Buffalo replied to GG's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's hard to take any list seriously that has phillip merling rated that high, especially above vernon gholston. Calais Campbell looks the part, yet when you watch him play is very underwhelming. He'll get overdrafted on measurables alone. I still think Lawrence Jackson, was more a product of the other players around him in Sc's front 7, then because of his own skill. -
Derrick Harvey - late observation?
MartyBall4Buffalo replied to GG's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Exactly in all The gators had 9 new defensive starters this past year. They lost 3 dlinemen 3 lb's and 3 db's. Harvey is not bruce smith/reggie white. He is an all around dend though. With long arms, a great closing burst. Plays the run well, and has the tools to be a good pass rusher. He would be a significant upgrade, to a dline who has all of 1 quality pass rusher, and 2 backup level dends. Schobel is aging. Denney is aging, and Chris Kelsay is well to say an incompetent starter would be an understatement. The money where paying to these guys is one thing. It hardly justifies a real reason, not to improve, at one the hardest, and most important positions on a football team. Especially when it lacks quality players. There are some other good pass rushing prospects in this draft. The question for the bills is. Would you rather have a pass rushing prospect, or a future starter. Looking at the age and lack of skill of denney/kelsay. I'm going with future starter. -
Is Devin Thomas too small?
MartyBall4Buffalo replied to The_Real's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Because he had 1 good season. I never saw Devin Thomas all that much. What I have seen, he seems to have some really nice potential. He's very good after the catch, strong with good leaping ability. As someone else said. Better to get a te for a redzone threat. Having another outside wr, to work the underneath-intermediate areas, as well as be another potential big play threat. Who excells at yac is the ideal kind of receiver for any offense. As far as David Boston goes, he could've been great if not for becoming a ballooned up steroid freak. He lost his speed fast, and his injuries, only complicated matters. -

The Bills need to make it happen
MartyBall4Buffalo replied to Cornerville's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah it's chad johnsons fault the bengals went out and drafted a bunch of criminals, and failed to do proper backround checks on players/and or took talent, over sound decision making. Meanwhile all Chad Johnson did, was go out and perform week in and week out, while being one of the best wr's in the nfl. What a douche. Must've been Chad Johnsons fault, while people like Chris Henry, Odell Thurman, AJ Nicholson, Frostee Rucker were all getting in trouble with the law. Chad Johnson is obviously the worst of the bunch, and the main reason for where the bengals are now. -
The Bills need to make it happen
MartyBall4Buffalo replied to Cornerville's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Care to explain because there is no statistical trend that shows this. If you think it's mainly because of his attitude that's one thing. His actual on field production says he's an elite nfl wr, with no signs of a downward trend. -
Great talent without a doubt. One of the 5 best d players? I'll disagree with that, but he is a very good dend. I'm not sure if he's worth the risk.

Pick the Bills first 3 selections
MartyBall4Buffalo replied to Reddy Freddy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
1. Derrick Harvey 2. Martellus Bennett 3. Early doucett -
I like lawrence jackson should the bills not get Harvey. However, let's not lose sight of the talent that was around jackson compared to harvey. Jackson legit had 4 guys in the front 7 of that defense who will be top 15 picks is Rey Maualuga, Brian Cushing and Sedric Ellis. Derrick Harvey didn't have that luxury. Jackson to me comes off as a guy who's physical measurables will hurt him in the pros. He doesn't have a quick closing burst, nor is he all that fast off the snap. I worry it was the talent around him, that's pushed his stock up to even where it is. I'd honestly almost prefer quentin groves over jackson. Jackson was a good college player, who may not be up to snuff in the pros.

More evidence that JP should be the starter
MartyBall4Buffalo replied to keepthefaith's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Marshawn Lynch sucked against Miami when JP played, vs his excellent game vs miami the 2nd time around when Trent played. 10 Nov 11 @ MIA W 13-10 19 61 3.2 18 1 14 Dec 9 MIA W 38-17 23 107 4.7 11 0 This doesn't really prove anything other then you can twist stats to state anything you basically want to say Oh and we actually had a better running game with trent at qb in this game, then any previous game that JP ever started. -
Taking a dend isn't a "luxury" pick. We have 1 quality aging starter, and 2 backup level players. There's nothing luxury about taking an dend. If Harvey is there, the Bills would be wise to seriously consider taking him, unless they're blown away in a trade down.

Being only 24 I agree with this. Hey anytime you beat a divisional rival fantastic, but I'm just ethiopian type starving to beat the pats. I'm an out of town fan, but I try to get to a game a year up there, and yearly @ the meadowlands against the jets. I do take more pleasure in beating the jets, then this terrible miami team. Beating Miami just doesn't do it for me anymore. I find it sickening, the way the bills rolled over and wanted the pats to rub their bellies last year. Just the dream of beating that team sustains my football interest.

Let me be the first to say it
MartyBall4Buffalo replied to eball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There's too many holes yet on this team. The front 7 on d is Weak, The secondary is weak. We need wr's and a te, but as of now I'm predicting 8-8. I had 6-10 last year. I think overall there's some nice players to build around. I don't expect any major runs this year. Just some steady improvement. With a good draft, and some lucky breaks maybe we eek out 10 wins. -

Few questions. 1. What's your height-weight 2. Dont really care much about your 40 time, but what did you get in short shuttle and cone drill? 3.Standing broad jump? 4. Would you say you're more of a man or zone corner? 5. Physical jam you up type, or comfy cushion with good closing speed to break? -

TBD Mock draft: Who do the Bills pick at #11
MartyBall4Buffalo replied to Ramius's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I always subscribe to BPA theory in this case imho is Keith Rivers. With Crowell only having 1 year left on his contract. No real depth at OLB behind Crowell/Mitchell. Rivers being the most technically sound lb to come out this year. It might not be our most major need. He's edging out Merling, who is not what we need at de. Even though Rich is right and he does compare favorably to Trevor Pryce. I just don't see him as a fit/upgrade over what we have. I was looking Harvey for a future starter. I dont think of Merling, in that vain. Rivers is a fantastic player, who would eventually be our starting wlb. A damn good one at that. -
I'm looking for an "Expert's" opinion on how the
MartyBall4Buffalo replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What he said. I'll add a little more though. I'm no expert, just my opinion on the matter. Although I think you do it the other way around. Fill in your lines first before deciding on a qb. Depending on the kind of offense you wanna run. Quicker more athletic linemen, for a pass based offense. Big brutes for a power running offense. If you want a pass based offense. You need a variety of faster wr's. Not just straight line speed, but those who are quick intially, as well as posessions good field vision to get the all important yards after catch. I like Lee Evans a lot, but he's more of a straight line speed deep threat, then a guy who can catch a screen or quick slant, and run for additional yardage. He's no Andre Reed, or even Eric Moulds, when Moulds was younger. If you want a power based offense. You should put a higher priority on blocking more physical wideouts. Size probably isn't a necessity, but ability and willingness to engage a defender, in the run game. Guards who have size, but also the agilty to pull out, and who finish blocks. Still posessing your traditional lt who protects the qb's blind side, and is better suited as a pass blocker. A center with intelligence who doesn't get killed in the run game. Your interior linemen, should posess the abilty to push the pile. Where as in a pass based offense. Your linemen should be quality run blockers, however probably a little quicker and lighter. Although if you can get big and quick by all means go for it. A Tight end probably pays more dividends, in a run oriented offense. Where you can exploit match problems especially in short yardage and the redzone. The ability to take some of the heat off your more physical wideouts, by keeping the seems honest. Defensively it remains the same imo. The quickes, and most efficent way to build a defense. Is multiple high picks, almost yearly dedicated to your dline. You start with interior players. Depending on the kind of dt's you like. Me I'm more of a fan of the huge dt's. Like offensive linemen. If your dt's are big and can create havock, by all means go for it. I'll take the Ted washingtons of the world anyday though, over the smaller quicker dt's. Whatever's easier to find, adjust accordingly. You sprinkle in pass rushers. I think your typical pass rushing end is easier to find then a franchise caliber end. Pass rushers liter the league, and can be had in many rounds. If you're looking for a top tier end. You're looking for different attributes in that player. How's their inital quickness? Can they explode off the snap, or do they get engaged quickly? If they lack inital quickness, do they make up for with good technique. Are they a plodding sort of fellow, who gets by with a bull rush. Are they good with the swim move, how well can they use their hands? How often do they maintain gap control. A good dend isn't just looking to rush upfield. They always have to be aware of the possibilty of cutback lanes, counters, and the reverse. Most importantly. How good is their closing burst. I think this is the most important aspect, of any good defensive end. The ability to close on a quarterback quickly, can be the difference, between a completed 3rd down pass, a sack, or a hurried throw leading to an interception. A quick closing burst, also can help in chasing down a running back, when he has the ground, for a long run outside the lanes. Most importantly you fill in your dline with quality depth players. Players who need be, can start games, and you won't miss much. Dedicate with plenty of high end picks. As far as lb's go, if you're sitting in the first, and theres a can't miss pro bowl quality lb, it's ok to grab him. I'm not really a fan, of dedicating high picks to lbs, because It's a position you can fill in later rounds. 2nd-5th. To me I think the 2 biggest aspects to solid lb play. Is 1. Their coverage skills. This is a fas evolving games, where rb's and te's are constantly used as secondary receiving options. As well as receivers who come across the middle on short slants. Can they maintain ground, close on the ball quickly, read the qb, as well as break on the intended target. Not many lb's, come into the pros with the ability to be a good coverage backer. 2. Are they a hitter or wrap up tackler. A lot of guys, coming into the pros, look for that espn "Jacked up" Hit. If you can't learn to hit number level, wrap and drive you have no business being a lb. It's easier to teach, then being good in coverage, but it's an often overlooked aspect, and a real detriment to run defense. Secondary. Honestly I'm not as intune with secondary play, as I am with front 7 players. However if I'm building a team I want a physical secondary, willing to punish receivers. The nfl caters too heavily to offensive football, and I'm strictly a fan of d. So I enjoy the heck out of it, when receivers are just afraid of catching passes. The aspect of corner play I'd value most, is can they jam receivers at the los, throwing off the timing. It makes the qb hold the ball longer, enabling your pass rush to be more active. If they misjudge the jam, do they have the agility to recover on their mistake, without getting burned. Smart but agressive corners, with good quickness. I value that more then speedy ballhawks. My safeties I want quick closing types, who don't kill you coverage, but also are willing to lay out someone over the middle. The activeness, and range of a corner, with the mindset of a lb. -
If Buffalo doesn't getWR Jordy Nelson then I hope
MartyBall4Buffalo replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Major difference. Reed originally went to LSU as a rb, and only played 2 years at wideout before declaring. Where as Doucet has been playing wr much longer. He has stronger control then reed. Runs better after the catch. No he won't ever be a #1 wr. You can pretty much say that about any wr coming out this year. He has potential to be a very good #2. He does have a little size on reed. In terms of height. -

MartyBall4Buffalo replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I've mentioned Doucet a few times. I think he would be one of the best all around fits for the bills at wr. Very good hands. Strong runner after the catch. Good in the redzone. An exceptional/very willing blocker at wr. Ideal for a complimentary wideout.
