If Apple could put out a half assed decent product that the average idiot could understand than they would be competitive. Unfortunately for them their product is too smart for Joe Blow.
-
HAHA you are great LA.
First off, I'm pretty sure I know more people that smoke marijuana than you do. Secondly, usually the ones that buy it that I know buy in larger quantities than 30 dollars. I used that as an example because even as "just" 30 dollars a pop, over the course of a month that's almost 200 bucks. Most people in America could use an extra 200 dollars a month don't ya think?

Best
Lincoln- Guided the country through it's darkest time. Ended slavery as well.
FDR- While some of his methods border on socialism, he got the job done with a little help from WWII and left the country in better shape than he found it when he got there.
-
Is that what the government plans to do with dope? Exactly when did the US become a socialist country?
And in what other area of our country is there a price set by the government for any given product? Concert tickets. DVDs? Movies? Cigarettes? Booze? Cars? Food? Gas? Clothes? Health care? Insurance? Can you name me ONE?
Suddenly they'll do this with dope?
The only item that could be compared to marijuana in this fashion is liquor. It's the only case in which a prohibitted item has been allowed back on the market after a public uproar. So if that is precedent than you would be making a good point.

If there were one supplier of cigarettes they would run about 4.00 a pack in Indiana. Currently a pack of Marlboros cost 3.00 plus sales tax. 3.18 total. If not for buydowns allowing stores to sell at state minimums they would cost 4.09 a pack at the moment.

Do you get out at ALL? I have a number of friends who make their own beer and its ten times better than any mass-produced beer. But that's not the point. The simple fact that YOU grow your own dope doesn't mean everyone will. You have to stop thinking that whatever you would do is what the rest of the world would do because I can absolutely promise you that you are NOT an example of joe consumer.
You obviously don't know many marijuana users than do you? A good percentage grow their own.
Let's look at one reason. The cost of purchasing the "drug".
Let's say you smoke one joint a day. A 30 dollar bag will get you six joints or so. so after 6 days you have spent 30, after 12 you have spent 60, after 18 you have spent 90, after 24 you have spent 120, and after 1 month you have spent 150.
150 dollars a month? That's 1800 dollars a year. Growing your own costs far less.
-
And you came to this cost how? The government would not make, sell and distribute the dope, dope. Companies would do it...probably tobacco companies...and then there would be this thing called "competition." Now, see, competition is very important to our economy and we actually have laws which keep companies from monopolizing...
Oh, christ, I can't believe I have to explain this to you.
Marijuana would not be sold in a competitive manner. The government would pick and choose the companies which it allowed to sell the product, and would then pretty much set a price (most likely one standard price).
The cost I gave is just street price for about that many joints.

Even that comparison doesn't stack up. It would be much harder for someone to create good quality booze in their garage than it would be for me to grow a friggin plant.
-
What did I just say? I said that it would be almost IMPOSSIBLE to enforce. I could grow marijuana in my home and the police won't be knocking on my door. Why would I go pay the government 30 dollars for 6 joints when I can grow my own? If everyone is growing their own without enforcement of anti growing laws, the government won't make a dime. No money, hence no legalization.
-
What??? Again there you go spouting opinion with no facts. Taxes, oversight and regulation laws that would impose a lot of additiona; corporate taxes on companies that would grow and distribute. You think the government doesn't make a shitload of money off cigarettes?
Wow you opinion doesn't match with fact. Go read a real book and stop reading poetry, you might learn something useful.
I know more about cigarette taxes and how that business works than 99 percent of the posters here. Trust me when I tell you that.
The difference in this case is simple. If marijuana were legalized with the idea that they were going to tax the hell out of it, people would just start growing their own. They would make that illegal, but that is almost impossible to enforce. I don't know about you, but most people can't produce high grade tobacco products out of their home.
Why would anyone go pay for marijuana through the government when they can grow their own and smoke it without being in fear of going to jail?
-
I understand the difference. But do you and everyone understand what class I means. It means the drug serves no medical purpose what so ever and cannot be prescribed. Just because opium or LSD are more dangerous or addictive, doesn't mean it should be permitted. Yes it is metally addictive. Questionable on physically addictive, but as Tom points out, what really is the diffeence, if you experience the crave and need for it, you are showing physical signs of addition, even if the "effects" are only mentally driven.
Marijuana is not a drug, first and foremost. It's not manufactured with chemicals in labs, and it can be grown to it's truest form from a seed in the ground. It's an herb.
-
Physical addiction entails becoming physically ill from not using the drug. I guess in the simplest definiton of "mental addiction" that marijuana may be addicting, as long time users have shown signs of being irritable for about 5 days after they have quit using marijuana.

Like I said, I can back my argument up with independent studies (you know, ones not conducted by the government media machine.)
Would you like me to show you some facts?

Yes
Yes
and the answer to the third, probably not directly.
But no I don't see it as a gateway drug, I see it as a full scale problem drug.
HAHAHA You expect me to take ANYTHING you pulled off of a GOVERNMENT site seriously?
I'm sure at whitehouse.gov they are telling everyone how great a job Bush is doing too.
-
How about: because it causes people to become total idiots that end up moving to Indiana and posting their inane opinions on internet message boards...
Seriously, though..."mentally" addictive as opposed to "physically" addictive? Prove to me those are two different things. And after you do, I'll introduce you to quite a few people who are "mentally" addicted to it more so than most people are to cigarettes...
A. I don't use the "drug"
B. Potheads don't wake up in a binge state where they "have" to have marijuana.
I don't need to go dig up studies on the subject to prove my point do I?
-
And exactly what reason would that be?
Is it physically addictive?
Is it mentally addictive?
Can you die from an "overdose"?
The answer to all three of those questions is no.
You can answer yes to at least one of those questions in regards to LSD and heroin.

I had a buddy who always brought crap like that in. Come lunch, he's pass it out. It wasn't an every-day occurrence, but we did do it. Usually on Fridays as we usually started "the party" early.
I'd argue that it probably happens at 99.9% of high schools (the %0.1 percent that it doesn't happen at are located in Utah).
When I look back at 17 - 22, I wonder how the hell I survived sometimes. Forget the fact that I hold a very good job and blah blah blah.

A few of my friends used to drop acid before school. They would leave after first period (I'm not real sure how they made it that long).

Why in the hell would anyone have to go to DRUG REHAB for marijuana? You have to be kidding me.
